    Phylogeny, systematics and biogeography of the European sand gobies (Gobiiformes: Gobionellidae)

    The sand gobies are a group of 30 species in five genera (Knipowitschia, Pomatoschistus, Economidichthys, Ninnigobius and Orsinigobius) native to the seas and fresh waters of Europe and the Ponto-Caspian region. We construct a phylogeny incorporating new DNA sequence data (mitochondrial COI gene) for species in Greece and the Adriatic (Venetian Lagoon) with existing sequences sampled from throughout European waters. Our comprehensive analysis confirms the distinctness of Orsinigobius and Ninnigobius, supports that Gobiusculus is part of Pomatoschistus and supports the monophyly of Economidichthys and Knipowitschia. We then calibrate the phylogeny using fossils, interpret the phylogenetic biogeography of sand gobies throughout Europe and the Mediterranean and estimate the historical divergence patterns in the group. We infer the origin of the sand goby clade at 33.0 Mya, near the Eocene–Oligocene boundary, and show that radiations among marine Pomatoschistus clades in the Miocene are correlated with the closure of the Tethys seaway. Younger freshwater clades of Ninnigobius, Orsinigobius and subclades of Knipowitschia diversified in the late Miocene and early Pliocene, centred in the Adriatic region and concordant with the Lago Mare phase of the Messinian salinity crisis. Economidichthys is the exception to this pattern; it inhabits freshwater but originated and diversified during the mid-Miocene

    Investment in farming under uncertainty and decoupled support: a real options approach

    Under the current version of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), payments to EU farmers are decoupled from the production of agricultural commodities. In fact, farmers qualify for CAP support as soon as their land is maintained in good agricultural and environmental condition. In this paper, we study how decoupled payments influence the decision to invest in farming. We show that decoupling is implicitly providing a costless hedge against volatile farming profits. Consequently, a higher decoupled payment leads the potential farmer to hasten its investment but also results in a farm with lower productive capacity

    On the syntactic encoding of lexical interjections in Italo-Romance

    Based on evidence from Italo-Romance, in this article I argue that lexical interjections can be split into three categories, depending on whether they must, they can or they cannot be integrated with the associated clause; the degree of integration with the co-occurring clause depends on the merge position of the interjection. Only interjections lexicalizing the functional head SpeechAct° represent autonomous linguistic acts and are therefore prosodically and syntactically independent from the associated clause; from this position they can attract the associated clause to the corresponding specifier position or raise to the adjacent head Speaker° in order to provide the necessary contextual anchoring. Interjections lexicalizing the lower projection EvalSP do not have these properties and are intrinsically discourse-linked

    The Italian legislation on divorce is 30 years old, consists of a small number of provisions and does not identify instruments for a definitive regulation of the patrimonial relations between spouses at the moment of the dissolution of the bond. The “una tantum” regulatory provision is the only solution that can lead to a “clean break” if it is submitted to an equity judgment. This paper discusses what the future of this legislation may be after the recent rulings of the United Chambers of Cassation on the “assegno di divorzio”

    Transparency and the rhetorical use of citations to Robert Yin in case study research

    Purpose – This paper aims to analyse “how”, “why” and “where” authors use citations of Robert Yin’s classic text, Case Study Research: Design and Methods, to determine the application of methodological transparency in published case study research. Design/methodology/approach – The analysis is conducted using a structured literature review methodology. Findings – The results reveal problems of obliteration by incorporation, miscitations, appeals to ethos, rhetorical convenience and a shadow effect, also known as adumbration. The authors argue that case study research relying, either in full or in part, on Yin’s methodology should transparently describe how and which parts of the methodology have been applied. Thus, the conclusions signal some opportunities for improving transparency in the use of citations in case study research. Research limitations/implications – The analysis highlights behaviours that may lead researchers to questionable findings due to a lack of methodological transparency in developing case study research, along with some recommendations for avoiding such problems. Improving transparency is useful for readers to understand what was done, for reviewers and editors to evaluate the research, and to guide other researchers who wish to conduct case study research. Originality/value – This research compares citation practices in case study research in accounting and management with a focus on citations of Robert Yin. The results build on previous studies that analyse how scholars apply case study methodology that encourages researchers to adopt greater transparency

    Comparison of meteorological and satellite-based drought indices as yield predictors of Spanish cereals

    In the context of global warming, as drought episodes become increasingly frequent, it is crucial to accurately measure the impacts of droughts on the overall performance of agrosystems. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of meteorological drought indices against satellite-based agronomical drought indices as crop yield explanatory factors in statistical models calibrated at a local scale. The analysis is conducted in Spain using a spatially detailed, 12-year (2003–2015) dataset on crop yields, including different types of cereals. Yields and drought indices were spatially aggregated at the agricultural district level. The Standardised Precipitation Index (SPI), computed at different temporal aggregation levels, and two satellite-based drought indices, the Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) and the Temperature Condition Index (TCI), were used to characterise the dynamics of drought severity conditions in the study area. Models resting on satellite-based indices showed higher performance in explaining yield levels as well as yield anomalies for all the crops evaluated. In particular, VCI/TCI models of winter wheat and barley were able to explain 70% and 40% of annual crop yield level and crop yield anomaly variability, respectively. We also observed gains in explanatory power when models for climate zones (instead of models at the national scale) were considered. All the results were cross-validated on subsamples of the whole dataset and on models fitted to individual agricultural districts and their predictive accuracy was assessed with a real-time forecasting exercise. Results from this study highlight the potential for including satellite-based drought indices in agricultural decision support systems (e.g. agricultural drought early warning systems, crop yield forecasting models or water resource management tools) complementing meteorological drought indices derived from precipitation grids
