    MATHEMATICAL METHODS IN ECONOMICS AND FINANCE

    This is the special issue of Mathematical Methods in Economics and Finance devoted to the International Scientific Forum “Education and Entrepreneurship in Siberia: directions of Cooperation and Development of Regions” held in Novosibirsk (Russia) from October 12 to 13, 2018. The Forum was dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Novosibirsk State University of Economics and Managements. The purpose of the Forum was to contribute to the formation of a scientific environment that (1) stimulates research into the application of business-oriented educational technologies, taking into account regional development strategies; (2) creates favorable conditions for interdisciplinary studies of organizational, technological, institutional and behavioral factors in the functioning of the entrepreneurial university and training of business engineers. Mathematical Methods in Economics and Finance is a journal published by the Ca' Foscari Department of Economics since 2012, and formerly published by the Department of Applied Mathematics of the same University from 2006 to 2011. This journal replaces the former Rendiconti, a series in Italian issued annually from 1969 to 2005. The main features of the journal are: 1. Publication of original and unpublished papers that present theoretical results, methodological contributions, and applications in the areas of actuarial mathematics, financial mathematics, management science, mathematical economics, quantitative finance, and operational research. 2. Peer review process based on double-blind refereeing by at least two anonymous referees. 3. Inclusion in the MathSciNet list of journals and in the ANVUR (National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes) list of journals. 4.     Review: Assessing fish welfare in research and aquaculture, with a focus on European directives.

    The number of farmed fish in the world has increased considerably. Aquaculture is a growing industry that will in the future provide a large portion of fishery products. Moreover, in recent years, the number of teleost fish used as animal models for scientific research in both biomedical and ecological fields has increased. Therefore, it is increasingly important to implement measures designed to enhance the welfare of these animals. Currently, a number of European rules exist as requirements for the establishment, care and accommodation of fish maintained for human purposes. As far as (teleost) fish are concerned, the fact that the number of extant species is much greater than that of all other vertebrates must be considered. Of further importance is that each species has its own specific physical and chemical requirements. These factors make it difficult to provide generalized recommendations or requirements for all fish species. An adequate knowledge is required of the physiology and ecology of each species bred. This paper integrates and discusses, in a single synthesis, the current issues related to fish welfare, considering that teleosts are target species for both aquaculture and experimental models in biological and biomedical research. We first focus on the practical aspects, which must be considered when assessing fish welfare in both research and aquaculture contexts. Next, we address husbandry and the care of fish housed in research laboratories and aquaculture facilities in relation to their physiological and behavioural requirements, as well as in reference to the suggestions provided by European regulations. Finally, to evaluate precisely which parameters described by Directive 2010/63/EU are reported in scientific papers, we analysed 82 articles published by European researchers in 2014 and 2015. This review found that there is a general lack of information related to the optimal environmental conditions that should be provided for the range of species covered by this directive

    1. In ancient times, the distribution range of the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) extended all over the coasts of the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and in parts of the North-eastern Atlantic coast. 8 2. Nowadays, the species is classified as Endangered and the current total world population is stated to consist of 700 animals, though numbers mostly express best estimates. Distribution patterns in documents of international authorities from the last 15 years indicate the species’ extinction in a number of Mediterranean countries while in some of them only a few individuals are thought to survive and in others the status is unknown. 3. The present study analyses recent monk seal sightings over the period from 2000 to 2014 in the Mediterranean Basin. The locations of the sightings cover most of the study area and indicate a spreading of individual seals or a more stable presence in regions where the species was considered extinct. 4. The investigation pointed out that efforts for the protection of monk seals, the most endangered marine mammal in Europe, should encompass all areas where monk seal sightings have been recorded including the protection and conservation of potential suitable habitats in countries where the species apparently no longer exists. 5. Appropriate conservation measures, such as the establishment of Marine Protected Areas and sustainable management of fisheries, will aid natural re-colonization and enhance gene flow between distant regions throughout the Mediterranean Basin allowing the reconnection of distant populations or individual animals

    The case of adjunct islands in Italian

    This work investigates extraction from adjuncts in Italian, as well as two factors that may have a role in island violation: the length of the filler-gap dependency and the effect of resumptive pronouns of the intrusive kind. The island effect is different according to the adjunct taken into account: in some cases extraction is consistently unacceptable, whereas in others it is licensed. Extraction is connected to the level of attachment of the adjunct and the formation of single macro-events made by the matrix verb and the one contained in the adjunct

    Locativi, esistenziali e possessivi nella lingua albanese

    Oggetto di questo lavoro sono le strutture locative e quelle esistenziali della lingua albanese che non sono mai state oggetto di studi specifici e approfonditi, né con metodi linguistici recenti né nell’ambito della grammatica tradizionale. Freeze, negli anni ’90, ha proposto una struttura basica comune ad entrambe le costruzioni, formate da due costituenti: un sintagma preposizionale di tipo locativo ed un tema, per lo più al caso nominativo. L’interpretazione locativa o esistenziale deriverebbe dalla maniera in cui i due argomenti si dispongono all’interno di ogni singola struttura: laddove troviamo un locativo in posizione di soggetto, la struttura diventa esistenziale, mentre quando in posizione di soggetto troviamo il tema, la struttura diventa locativa. La comparazione fra locative ed esistenziali, nella lingua albanese, mostra quel che Freeze pone alla base della derivazione: la posizione inversa dei due costituenti, tema e locativo. Ma in albanese, al di là della posizione dei due costituenti, anche l’alternanza degli ausiliari Jam ‘essere’ vs Kam ‘avere’ è rilevante per l’interpretazione della frase

    Plasma Activation of Copper Nanowires Arrays for Electrocatalytic Sensing of Nitrate in Food and Water

    Electrochemical methods for nitrate detection are very attractive since they are suitable for in-field and decentralized monitoring. Copper electrodes are often used to this aim as this metal presents interesting electrocatalytic properties towards nitrate reduction. In this research, we study improvements in the electrochemical analysis of nitrate in natural water and food by taking advantage of the detection capabilities of ensembles of copper nanowire electrodes (CuWNEEs). These electrodes are prepared via template electrodeposition of copper within the nanopores of track-etched polycarbonate (PC) membranes. A critical step in the preparation of these sensors is the removal of the template. Here, we applied the combination of chemical etching with atmospheric plasma cleaning which proved suitable for improving the performance of the nanostructured copper electrode. Analytical results obtained with the CuWNEE sensor for nitrate analyses in river water samples compare satisfactorily with those achieved by standard chromatographic or spectroscopic methods. Experimental results concerning the application of the CuWNEEs for nitrate analysis in food samples are also presented and discussed, with focus on nitrate detection in leafy vegetables
