Facile isolation of LCC-fraction from organosolv lignin by simple Soxhlet extraction
No full textA new fractionation protocol for wheat straw organosolv lignin was developed on the basis of the dominating H-bonding orientations of its components. Acetone as H-bond accepting aprotic polar solvent and methanol as H-bond donating and accepting protic polar solvent were used in sequence. Obtained fractions were structurally and thermally analysed. The protocol allowed for the generation of purified lignin fractions and the isolation of a novel, yet unobserved lignin carbohydrate complex (LCC) fraction. This LCC fraction was found to contain exclusively phenyl glycosides and γ-esters as LCC motifs

No full textIl volume è un ampio racconto storico-letterario rivolto agli studenti e ai lettori interessati a orientarsi nel panorama delle lettere nordiche, dalle origini nell'età vichinga e nel medioevo fino a oggi. E' frutto del lavoro e della collaborazione di quindici autori, attivi a vario titolo nella scandinavistica italiana. Tra loro, Massimo Ciaravolo è l'ideatore dell'opera e della sua struttura, curatore del volume e autore di buona parte delle pagine riguardanti la letteratura di lingua svedese - in Svezia e in Finlandia - dalla Riforma a oggi. L'opera dedica ampio spazio al Novecento e all'età contemporanea, quest'ultima mai coperta da un'approfondita descrizione storico-letteraria in Italia, visto che l'ultimo manuale è di Mario Gabrieli del 1969. L'opera include e intreccia la storia dell'evoluzione letteraria in Danimarca, Norvegia, Islanda, Svezia, Finlandia di lingua svedese e alle Isole Føroyar; si sofferma sulle correnti letterarie e sull'opera dei maggiori autori scandinavi e nordici, inquadrando autori e opere all'interno delle dinamiche culturali, sociali e storico-politiche. Dedica il giusto spazio anche alla letteratura contemporanea di genere, in particolare alla letteratura di investigazione e per bambini e ragazzi, settori trainanti della produzione culturale del Nord che si esporta nel mondo. L'opera si sofferma anche sulla contemporanea letteratura della migrazione, che sta arricchendo il panorama letterario di nuovi temi, prospettive e forme espressive
Biotic and abiotic factors affecting seasonal and spatial distribution of meiofauna and macrophytobenthos in transitional coastal waters: the case of Venice lagoon
No full textBenthic organisms are considered among the best bioindicators being closely associated to sediments in which many pollutants are stored. In this study, macrophytes and meiofauna have been investigated in a transitional area (Venice lagoon, Italy) characterized by numerous anthropogenic pressures. Macrophyte Quality Index and meiofaunal richness were used to assess Ecological Quality (EcoQ) status in line with Water Framework and Marine Strategy Framework Directives. Comparing the EcoQ classes, the results appeared consistent in 24 sites, whereas, in the remaining 5 ones, the values significantly diverged. These results could be related i) to the presence of the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa that could affect meiofaunal taxa with the production of tannins; ii) to the different time response of these communities to human impacts. No full textConsiderato il capolavoro della narrativa breve dello scrittore afroamericano Charles W. Chesnutt, il racconto “Il Procuste di Baxter” (1904), tradotto qui per la prima volta in italiano, è una divertente quanto impietosa satira dei club letterari asserviti al mantenimento del privilegio e dello status quo culturale e sociale. Percorso da echi curiosamente melvilliani, il racconto segue la nascita di un “caso letterario” che diventa tale, per paradosso, proprio nel momento in cui ne viene svelata l’inesistenza. Un racconto dove trionfa il magistrale talento ironico di Chesnutt e che si contraddistingue per una spiccata valenza metanarrativa che conduce il lettore a interrogarsi sui rapporti enigmatici tra l’opera e la sua manifestazione materiale—e, non in ultimis, sul valore stesso della letteratura.
“Il Procuste di Baxter” è qui accompagnato da altri quattro racconti—presentati anch’essi nella loro prima traduzione italiana—incentrati sulla cosiddetta “linea del colore”, in cui vengono ritratte le tensioni razziali negli Stati Uniti di fine Ottocento: opere esemplificative del talento poliedrico e della varietà di temi, di registro e di stile che contraddistinsero la fine prosa breve di Chesnutt

Efficient train re-routing and rescheduling: valid inequalities and reformulation of RECIFE-MILP
No full textThe real-time Railway Traffic Management problem consists in finding suitable train routes and schedules to minimize delay propagation due to traffic perturbations. RECIFE-MILP is a mixed integer linear programming based heuristic for this problem which has proven to be effective in various contexts. However, when instances are very large or difficult, the performance of the algorithm may worsen. In this paper, we propose valid inequalities to boost the performance of RECIFE-MILP. These valid inequalities link the routing and scheduling binary variables. We also provide an instance in which they are able to represent all the facets of the projection of the convex hull of the problem in the subspace of the binary variables. Moreover, they allow reformulating the model based on a reduced number of scheduling binary variables. In an experimental analysis based on realistic instances representing traffic in four French infrastructures, we observe that the merit of addition of valid inequalities depends on the specific case-study at hand, and that the reduction of the number of binary variables in general boosts the performance of RECIFE-MILP significantly
