A High-Resolution Global Gridded Historical Dataset of Climate Extreme Indices
Climate extreme indices (CEIs) are important metrics that not only assist in the analysis of regional and global extremes in meteorological events, but also aid climate modellers and policymakers in the assessment of sectoral impacts. Global high-spatial-resolution CEI datasets derived from quality-controlled historical observations, or reanalysis data products are scarce. This study introduces a new high-resolution global gridded dataset of CEIs based on sub-daily temperature and precipitation data from the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS). The dataset called “CEI_0p25_1970_2016” includes 71 annual (and in some cases monthly) CEIs at 0.25∘× 0.25∘ gridded resolution, covering 47 years over the period 1970–2016. The data of individual indices are publicly available for download in the commonly used Network Common Data Form 4 (NetCDF4) format. Potential applications of CEI_0p25_1970_2016 presented here include the assessment of sectoral impacts (e.g., Agriculture, Health, Energy, and Hydrology), as well as the identification of hot spots (clusters) showing similar historical spatial patterns of high/low temperature and precipitation extremes. CEI_0p25_1970_2016 fills gaps in existing CEI datasets by encompassing not only more indices, but also by being the only comprehensive global gridded CEI data available at high spatial resolution
Lignin: Isolation, Structure and Valorisation
Lignin is the second most abundant polymer in forest biomass after
cellulose. Compared to the ubiquitous use of cellulose, lignin is currently simply
being wasted. In fact, as a waste product in the cellulose production, it serves mainly
for the generation of energy. The reason for this lies in the challenging structural
features and the patchy understanding of the correlation between structural
features and polymer characteristics displayed by various lignins. This chapter
will introduce the general characteristics and peculiarities of lignin as biopolymer
and will present techniques for investigating structural issues. Approaches toward
a valorization of lignin will be highlighted, showing the possibilities for using lignin
in chemistry and material sciences
102 cost
Growth of Gold Nanoparticles in a Glass Matrix by Continuous Laser Irradiation for Efficient Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering
The synthesis of a soda-lime glass doped by gold nanoparticles (Nps) is achieved using successively thermal poling and continuous wave (cw) ultraviolet (UV) laser exposure. The formation of gold Nps is undoubtedly proved by an absorption band characteristic of their surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and by scanning electron microscopy, which reveals Nps of about 40 nm in diameter, located in the very near surface region of the glass. Absorption spectroscopy also suggests the formation of bimetallic silver-gold Nps in systems prepared by using thermal poling and laser exposure of a glass previously doped by silver ions using ion exchange. Finally, the low detection limit of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) measured by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy proves the potential of our gold-doped glass as an efficient Raman substrate, which offers an alternative to silver Nps doped glass

Sectoral Differences in Labor Productivity Growth: Estimation and Modeling
This study provides some empirical evidence and quantification of differences in labor
productivity among industries and countries. Using a recently available data base of value
added per worker, country and time fixed effects are estimated first for various industries.
Results are subsequently elaborated, to identify some time trends and sectoral profiles by
country, which are in turn employed in a cluster analysis, summarizing some salient
characteristics of industrial labor productivity in different economies. The empirical exercise
is motivated by the possible employment of its findings in the construction of long-run
economic growth scenarios, by means of Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models. It
is found that: (a) Manufacturing is normally the fastest growing sector and its performance is
strongly correlated with the aggregate productivity growth; (b) differences in the rates of
agricultural productivity gains are relatively minor; (c) slow-growing countries are
characterized by slow-growing Services
Remittances, Labour Supply and Activity of Household Members Left-Behind
This paper analyses the role of remittances on labour supply and activity of household members left behind, by explicitly distinguishing between different types of self-employment. Contrary to the existing evidence, we find no ‘dependency’ effect of remittances. Our results show that remittances received by households in Tajikistan decrease the probability of wage employment and increase that of small-scale self-employment activities of men staying behind, without affecting the number of job-specific hours worked. Any positive effect on economic development would be, however, limited, as self-employment is in rather small-scale activities that do not generate a regular income stream
