Vt saepe homines aegri morbo gravi…
The present article offers a linguistic investigation of two Latin pathological terms: aeger and aegrotus when referring to a physical disease. Although the meaning of these adjectives overlaps, the analysis of their occurrences in literature reveals a difference in their degree of technicality and their belonging to distinct linguistic registers: aeger is found in high poetry and technical prose, whereas aegrotus oc¬curs in less ‘elevated’ genres, such as comedy and satire. Of particular interest is the appearance of αἶγροι – a Greek transliteration of aegri adapted to the morphological system of the target language – in some ‘medical ostraca’ unearthed in the Roman praesidium of Mons Claudianus, in the Eastern Egyptian Desert. This article will also shed light on the socio-linguistic value of such attestations, in parallel with the occurrences of the word aegri in other documentary papyri from a military context
Animal Cloning and Mind Uploading. Ethics of Creating a Replica of Your Pet
This article explores the morality of creating genetic or digital copies of pets. Through a cloning operation, a genetic copy of any individual can be created. The creation of a digital copy (of an individual), on the other hand, is possible in at least two different ways. First, we can create a digital copy (digital ghost) of an individual, transferring to this avatar information about his or her personality, memories, experiences, and other characteristics. The other way is to create a sim (whole brain emulation), i.e. a digital copy of a real person by scanning the internal struc-tures of his or her brain into a computer (mind uploading). We will first address the moral is-sues related to the cloning of animals, with particular attention to the health of the animals in-volved and the involvement of other animals in the intervention. We will then discuss some ob-jections against those who resort to cloning, focusing on the accusation that they disrespect the original animal and that, in any case, instead of bringing new individuals into the world, they should take care of existing animals. Finally, we will examine the moral implications of creating digital copies of animals. By analysing these issues, the article aims to offer a comprehensive view of the moral and social implications of cloning and digital replication of pets
The Italian-Dalmatian liberal autonomist party and the Habsburg Monarchy
Between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the Italian minorities who lived in Austrian Dalmatia gathered politically around the Italian-Dalmatian liberal autonomist party. Born as a movement for the defense of the autonomy of Dalmatia, instead of the proposed union with Croatia, and of the constitutional reforms for the concession of individual civil, religious, political and cultural freedoms, it soon became the representative of Dalmatian specificity and particularism, to be protected and enhanced. This essay traces the political events of the party and its ideological maturation until the outbreak of the First World War, showing how, in response to national and international circumstances, it went from being the representative of the Italian Dalmatians to being the party of the Italians of Dalmatia, embracing an increasingly strong irredentism, first cultural and then political
Shaping the future of space robotics. From orbital debris to exploring distant worlds
From reaching orbit to exploring the Moon, Mars and beyond, “space is hard” is a refrain often heard by those pushing humanity’s limits. Robots, guided by engineers and scientists, have long supported astronauts in tackling these immense challenges. We have discussed key aspects of robotic space exploration: In Situ Resource Utilization, in-orbit assembly, multi-agent exploration, and more. We looked at progress toward the Moon and Mars, space debris risks, in-orbit manufacturing, and what the future holds in space for Europe and the world
This paper is a comparison of the scientific validity of climate research by natural scientists with the anthropogenic concept of climate change proposed by political technologists. The process of imposing anthropogenic philosophy on society is traced and the motives and incentives used in this process are analyzed. A brief overview of discussions on the possibilities of mankind to influence the physics of the atmosphere, the ecosystem of the Earth and the climate of the planet is given. The importance of the problem of ozone holes in the approval of the anthropogenic concept of global climate change is shown. The main stages of its international dissemination and an overview of political, economic, financial, propaganda, scientific and technological measures aimed at displacing fossil energy sources and attracting commercial investors in the field of alternative energy are identified.
Biodiversity Protection and Sustainability Models in Food and Wine Tourism
Starting from the results of a study on the food and wine offer of the Karst plateau that extends over the Italian-Slovenian border area and, more specifically, on the sustainability and application criteria of slow tourism by restaurant operators, the contribution explores the propensity of this reality to move towards models of sustainability, necessary for a development in line with the new social (meanings attributed to food), economic (promotion of soft tourism) and environmental (protection of biodiversity) demands and needs. The sustainability model illustrated operates on three dimensions: short supply chain and local biodiversity; slow tourism applied to sustainable food and wine; networked governance and integrated territorial planning. With reference to the reality studied, the model calls for promoting a more collaborative territorial governance, investing in digital communication and raising the awareness of the local community towards a shared tourism vision oriented towards sustainability.
Turn-transition in video-mediated interpreting: a case study of a multiparty and multi-sited public conversation
Video-mediated interpreting has become a prominent form of interpreting; however, the emergence of diverse configurations in the post-pandemic era presents new challenges and calls for further investigation. This study examines a video conference involving four primary interlocutors and an interpreter connected from distributed locations, with an audience observing the interaction, in order to elucidate how turn-transition (TT) is managed by multiple remote participants. The paper first reviews previous studies on TT and video-based interaction from a multimodal perspective and outlines the methodology applied. To contextualise the analysis, background information about the event and its participants is then provided, with particular attention to the interactional ecology and technical setup. Drawing on the multimodal approach in Conversation Analysis, TT instances are analysed by focusing on intra-turn gaps and overlapping turn-beginnings. Findings show that lengthy gaps are common, while overlaps occur seldom. This pattern reflects a controlled behaviour pattern of participants which is shaped by the multiparty and multi-sited configuration. The presence of the audience creates a formal dimension, which also impacts participants’ behaviour. Overall, the study contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of diversified technology-based interpreting practices
Code-switching practices in English-Italian mediator-interpreted parent-teacher conferences
In interpreter-mediated public service encounters, when primary interlocutors can partially speak each other’s language(s), they may shift into their counterpart’s language, resulting in instances of code-switching. Previous research has shown that such code-switching can affect interpreter-mediated encounters by shaping role negotiation and participant communication. The present study draws on the analysis of two mediated parent-teacher meetings audio recorded in a nursery school in Reggio-Emilia and provides insights into code-switching by Italian teachers when English is used as the language of mediation with migrant parents. The data were analysed using a conversation analytical approach, to establish where within sequences teachers’ code-switching occurs and with what implications. Two patterns were identified: in the first, code-switching is initiated during dyadic sequences between the mediator and the parent, often to tackle specific trouble sources; in the second, code-switching occurs just after the beginning of a sequence and serves to establish direct communication with the migrant parents. The analysis of mediators’ actions during sequences involving teacher code-switching revealed that mediators orient to cooperating with teachers by either adapting their renditions to the teachers’ code-switched utterances or withholding their intervention until the sequence has further developed. These findings highlight how code-switching also influences the interpreter’s role and decision-making within the interaction
