Comparative analysis of Italian and International Baccalaureate computer science textbooks in relation to their graphic design and interdisciplinary approach
This study analyses the structure of informatics textbooks used in Italian and International Baccalaureate schools, assessing their graphical design and interdisciplinary approach, with attention to ethical, historical, philosophical, and cultural aspects in a broad sense. While informatics is often included in education materials useful for other subjects, few studies focus on its textbooks. The analysis combines text mining, graphic evaluation, and factors like sales data, teacher feedback, market presence, and core topics.
Romania, the stronghold of national communism against Gorbachev
This study focuses on the decidedly negative relationship between the Romanian leader Nicolae Ceaușescu and Gorbachev. The reasons for their disagreement had already been clearly identified by contemporary observers and even more so by historians. The reforms initiated by the General Secretary of the Cpsu were incompatible with the “national” direction that the Romanian communist regime had embraced since the 1960s, a standpoint that was further intensified in the following years with the consolidation of Ceaușescu’s dictatorship. A collision between the two leaders was inevitable, and it ultimately ended with the deposition and execution of the Romanian leader
The mortgage of the good feudal lord. Late Kádárism and the failure of Hungarian democracy after 1989
This contribution aims to evaluate the long-term consequences of the Kádár regime’s stability in the context of recent Hungarian political and social history. The question is: under what conditions did the “good dictator”, who was respected by the vast majority of his fellow citizens, leave the country on the eve of the 1989-90 transformations? Was the Hungary that emerged from Kádárism for real the model pupil of Eastern European démocratisation, or was the “new” Hungary a «democratic bubble» instead, overestimated by international observers and Hungarian scholars themselves? Furthermore, to what extent does the sixth authoritarian experiment in the space of a century, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán since 2010, owe its origins to the social bloc and collective mentality formed during the Kádár period
Livelli di comunicazione e rottura dell’illusione letteraria nell’epistolografia fittizia di età imperiale: a proposito di Eliano, epist. 20
The communicative strategy of Aelian’s work is outlined through survey of the play between the external author with his readers (the audience), and the internal authors with respective readers. Aelian, the external pepaideumenos author, addresses a likewise learned audience of pepaideumenoi, producing letters as written by one main type of fictional characters (ethe) - farmers - with a far lesser degree of paideia
In the ongoing debate about the future influence of AI on our lives, public and expert discussions often raise questions about the impact of AI on schools and universities, and the direction in which our education system is heading. It is becoming apparent that the use and application of artificial intelligence in education is having a profound impact and is likely to continue to grow. In the future, learners will require specific guidance and competent teachers to enable them to critically evaluate their learning in collaboration with AI. What does this mean in concrete terms for teaching? For instance, how useful are writing assignments or homework when AI tools can answer any question and generate any text, no matter how complex? These questions lead us to conclude that revising teaching content and redefining tasks will be essential. This article aims to show how teachers and learners can expand their skills using new methods. It also aims to encourage the development of innovative strategies for language acquisition using AI tools. After a brief introduction on how AI and education influence each other, the author presents his own classroom observations. These show how AI tools can be particularly helpful in acquiring writing skills and provide examples of how AI influences the writing process of students. Based on these examples, the author also asks whether this approach really offers added value for learning
Fragility, inclusion, and transformation of the built environment
In recent years, the scientific debate on architecture and the transformation of the built environment has progressively expanded, increasingly incorporating the themes of sustainability, inclusion, and adaptability. Within this framework, the INEST project has provided an interdisciplinary research context aimed at exploring how human, social, and environmental fragilities can become a starting point for rethinking the quality of inhabited space and the forms of interconnection between individuals, communities, and the environment.
Digital tools in foreign language teaching and learning: the good, the bad, and the ugly
This paper explores the advantages and challenges of developing a student- centered language learning website for a group of EFL students at the Department of Political and Social Science of the University of Trieste. More specifically, a selection of songs containing lyrics with embedded political, social, and/or cultural meaning is chosen as the basis for the language learning activities integrated into the website. A number of digital tools are used to develop practice exercises aimed specifically at expanding the students’ vocabulary range in a carefully sequenced, enjoyable, and digestible manner. Among the activities contemplated in the design of the website, one in particular invites students to participate in its ongoing development by contributing with a song in English of their choice with similar content as described above. By researching a song online and creating a digital language activity for their peers, students enhance their language and digital literacy skills while also fostering each other’s intercultural awareness. The paper concludes with reflections on the benefits, limitations, and often neglected implications of using digital technologies to create such a language learning tool
Historiography and Politics: On the Drafts of the Letter to Vera Zasulič
The aim of this contribution is to outline the stratigraphic historiographical model which could be located within Marx’s drafts of the letter to Vera Zasulič, in order to shed light on its imma-nent political orientation. Starting from a geological metaphor used by Marx in a letter to En-gels (25 March 1868), this paper investigates the 1881’s drafts and illustrates the articulation of historical layers that Marx was able to pinpoint considering the form of Russian commune. By confronting it with the case of East India, subjected to Britain’s domination, I show how this in-terpretation of socialist potentialities hidden in the Russian obščina challenges every determinis-tic idea of progress as well as “regressive” conception of socialism itself. This analysis involves the firm recognition of the very political dimension inscribed within Marx’s historiography and its relevance to root concretely the possibilities of communist revolution within contemporary contradictions
