V akumulacijah smo skupno potrdili razmnoževanje sedmih vrst dvoživk: velikega pupka (Triturus carnifex), planinskega pupka (Ichthyosaura alpestris), navadnega pupka (Lissotriton vulgaris), hribskega urha (Bombina variegata), navadne krastače (Bufo bufo), sekulje (Rana temporaria) in rosnice (Rana dalmatina). Artificial water habitats can be breeding sites for amphibians but may also function as ecological traps. Water accumulations for artificial snowmaking are not optimal habitats for amphibians, and little is known about their reproduction in these water bodies. In this study, we sampled amphibians in two accumulations for snowmaking in the Mariborsko Pohorje area. One is located at the foothills of Pohorje (312 m a.s.l.) in an urban environment, and the other on the slopes of Pohorje (560 m a.s.l.), surrounded by forest that is part of the Natura 2000 Pohorje. In total, we confirmed the reproduction of seven amphibian species in these accumulations: Italian Crested Newt (Triturus carnifex), Alpine Newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris), Smooth Newt (Lissotriton vulgaris), Yellow-bellied Toad (Bombina variegata), Common Toad (Bufo bufo), Common Frog (Rana temporaria), and Agile Frog (Rana dalmatina). The Yellow-bellied Toad and the Italian Crested Newt are qualifying species for the Natura 2000 Pohorje site. In the accumulation at the foothill of Pohorje, where fish were present, amphibian reproduction was unsuccessful. In the accumulation on the slope of Pohorje, where there were no fish, the steep banks (30-60°) with uncovered geomembrane and the low water level led to the mortality of adult Yellow-bellied Toads and numerous (>500) juvenile Rana sp. frogs. The drop in water level also resulted in the stranding of eggs and embryos of the Italian Crested Newt. Snowmaking reservoirs are unsuitable for amphibians in several respects, yet they still use them for breeding. To reduce amphibian mortality, the following measures should be implemented: maintaining maximum water levels during the breeding season (March-July), covering the geomembrane and reducing the bank steepness to facilitate amphibian exit, removing fish through autumn reservoir drainage, and preventing roadkill on roads adjacent to the reservoirs

Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) has replaced Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE)-based bacterial genotyping as the reference genotyping method. We investigated the suitability of purified genomic DNA extracted from PFGE agarose plugs stored in a laboratory collection for WGS in cases where bacterial isolates are no longer available. Our study has shown that bacterial WGS can be successfully performed on DNA extracted from PFGE agarose plugs.

Recognizing the benefits of large carnivore presence in Slovenia

    No full text
In recent decades, populations of the brown bear, grey wolf, and Eurasian lynx in Europe have made a significant recovery. This success is largely attributable to effective legislation, an increase in prey species, and the expansion of forested areas. As a result, large carnivores are gradually returning to regions from which they had long been absent. However, the return of these predators also brings challenges for local communities. While much research emphasizes conflicts and damages, this study focuses on the often-overlooked positive perspectives held by key stakeholder groups in Slovenia. Through focus group interviews with hunters, farmers, tourism workers, and artists, the study explores the benefits of large carnivore presence using the framework of Cultural Ecosystem Services (CES), based on the CICES classification. Tourism professionals perceive the presence of large carnivores as a key advantage for the development of tourism. For hunters, encounters with these animals provide opportunities to deepen their ecological knowledge, develop tracking skills, and share this expertise with pride within their communities. Some farmers, despite experiencing livestock losses, acknowledge the role of predators in regulating populations of wild herbivores. Artists experience large carnivores as a source of inspiration and as an opportunity to foster better interpersonal relationships and social dialogue. Recognizing the benefits and values that different stakeholder groups attribute to large carnivores can support the development of more inclusive conservation strategies, strengthen dialogue with stakeholders, and shift the focus from conflict mitigation toward fostering coexistence

Modular lidar system for multiple field-of-view ranging

    No full text
This paper explores the possibility of distributing the fields of view (FOVs) of a centralized lidar cluster using fixed mirrors for future use in safety applications in robotics and elsewhere. A custom modular lidar system with time-over-threshold (TOT) walk error compensation was developed for the experiments. It comprises a control board that provides the processing power and adjustable voltage regulation, and multiple individually addressable analogue front end (AFE) boards that each contain a transmitter, a receiver, time-to-digital (TDC) converters for pulse width measurements on the bot Tx and Rx side, and adjustable reference voltage generators for both the Tx and Rx pulse detection threshold. The lidar system’s performance with a target in the direct line of sight is compared to the configurations where the FOV is redirected with up to three mirrors in different configurations. The results show that the light path through the neighboring mirrors introduces a minor but noticeable measurement error on a portion of the measurement range

This paper describes the results from a fully integrated longitudinal mixed model study examining the nature of, changes in, and interaction between the upper secondary and higher education aspirations of Croatian pupils. The research was carried out over two academic years in which pupils approached the transition from single-structure elementary (primary and lower secondary) education to differentiated upper secondary education. The qualitative part of the study centred on an indepth exploration of the educational aspirations of 30 pupils from five schools using a series of 118 semi-structured interviews. The quantitative part consisted of repeated questionnaire administration (N = 823) while pupils progressed to the final year of elementary education. Generalised Estimating Equations for Repeated Measures Outcome and Latent Curve Growth Modelling procedures indicate significant changes in upper secondary aspirations and stable higher education aspirations over time. Qualitative analyses indicate five patterns of upper secondary education aspirations and three patterns of higher education aspirations. Analysis of the interaction between aspirations at different educational levels suggests that upper secondary aspiration mediates a pupil’s aspiration for higher education. These results suggest that special effort is necessary in order to inform pupils about their educational options at both the upper secondary and higher education levels. Postopki posplošenih ocenjevalnih enačb za rezultate ponovljenih meritev in modeliranja latentne krivulje rasti kažejo na pomembne spremembe aspiracij v srednješolskem izobraževanju in stabilne aspiracije v visokošolskem izobraževanju skozi čas.

While motor impairments are often the primary focus of rehabilitation, research emphasizes that cognitive and psychological sequelae critically influence long-term functioning, quality of life, and overall recovery. Psychological difficulties, including depression, anxiety, and stress, affect motivation, emotional regulation, and active participation in rehabilitation, representing a significant public health concern and highlighting the need for comprehensive care that incorporates structured psychological support. Stroke is typically a sudden and life-altering event not only for patients but also for their family members, who often assume the role of primary caregivers. The quality of family functioning significantly affects patients’ psychological recovery, while long-term caregiving imposes substantial emotional, physical, and social burdens. Targeted psychosocial interventions involving both patients and caregivers have demonstrated particular effectiveness, promoting improved adjustment and well-being for both parties. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of a supportive psychotherapeutic group on the psychological functioning of individuals after stroke, focusing on depression, anxiety, stress, and emotional and behavioral adjustment. The findings indicated statistically significant reductions in depressive symptoms and stress, along with moderate improvements in anxiety. Qualitative results further revealed enhanced mood, relaxation, and emotional regulation among most participants, with progress being highly individualized and associated with functional level and capacity to engage in group dynamics. These results underscore the importance of integrating psychological support into stroke rehabilitation and highlight the pivotal role of caregivers in maintaining and reinforcing improvements in the home environment. Key challenges remain the heterogeneity of the post-stroke population, the need for highly individualized psychological interventions, and limited access to such support in clinical practice. Future directions include ensuring long-term continuity of psychological care, systematically involving caregivers in the therapeutic process, and conducting studies with larger samples and longer follow-up periods to assess sustained psychological effects of interventions, representing a significant opportunity to advance comprehensive post-stroke rehabilitation

Ivanka Hergold’s The knife and the apple: Herta Jamnik’s search for the authenticity of the self

    No full text
In the novel Nož in jabolko (The Knife and the Apple), the shift from third to firstperson narration mirrors the protagonist Herta Jamnik’s emotional crescendo, with each “I” a defiant pulse of selfhood against the void of erasure. This autobiographical fiction breaks identity into mythic and modernist shards: the knife of alienation (cold, precise, and maledominated) clashes with the apple of yearning (Edenic but rotting with social guilt). Herta’s resistance to conformity is not intellectual but visceralher thwarted escapes and raw emotional responses, rage at being confined, and grief for her lost roots expose the feminist body as a battleground. The diary’s form itself becomes a tactic of survival, its emotional intensity weaponizing vulnerability. Through classical myths (e.g., the inscription on the pediment in Apollo’s temple at Delphi) and modernist fragmentation, the text maps authenticity as an emotional act: to feel is to exist. Close readings of specific scenes reveal how Herta’s body language (shaking and silence) encodes suppressed emotion.V romanu Nož in jabolko odraža prehod iz tretje v prvoosebno pripoved čustveni crescendo glavne literarne osebe Herte Jamnik – vsak »jaz« je kljubovalni utrip samopodobe proti praznini izbrisa. Ta avtobiografska fikcija razbija identiteto na mitske in modernistične črepinje: nož odtujenosti (hladen, natančen, moško upravljan) se spopade z jabolkom hrepenenja (rajskim, a gnilim zaradi družbene krivde). Hertino nasprotovanje konformizmu ni intelektualno, temveč visceralnonjeni onemogočeni pobegi in surovi čustveni odzivi – bes zaradi konfinacije, žalost zaradi izgubljenih korenin – razkrivajo feministično telo kot bojno polje.
