Exploring the effects of multimodal user interfaces in autonomous vehicles

No full text
This short paper presents a study design created to explore how multimodal user interfaces (UIs) influence comfort, user experience, and overall well-being in fully autonomous vehicles. The study uses a motion-based driving simulator equipped with real vehicle components to provide realistic driving conditions. Participants are asked to complete two trials: a baseline trial and one with either a simple or extended multimodal UI combining auditory, tactile, and speech-based feedback. Driving scenarios include lane changes, emergency braking, V2X and V2V communication, and road surface variations. Data collection integrates physiological measures (EGG, EDA, PPG), self-assessment questionnaires on motion sickness (MSAQ) and user experience (UEQ), and performance on a reading comprehension task simulating non-driving activities. The paper provides some initial data about the participants’ demographics and their user experience with the UI, and gives an insight into the planned nest steps in terms of analysis and results application. The findings from this study will provide an insight into the potential of multimodal HMI design to enhance safety, comfort, and user acceptance in autonomous vehicles

No full text
This study evaluated the specific morphological and biochemical parameters of fruits from ten pear cultivars, including several traditional old cultivars, such as \u27President Drouard\u27, \u27Hartilian\u27, \u27Clapp’s Favorite\u27, \u27Poire de Cure\u27, ⟺lse Pituralka\u27, \u27Risovka\u27, \u27Santa Maria\u27, \u27Starkrimson\u27, \u27Triomphe de Vienne\u27 and \u27Nordhäuser Winterflorelle\u27. Significant differences in fruit quality were observed among the evaluated pear cultivars. The cultivars \u27Risovka\u27 (32.62 g) and \u27President Drouard\u27 (47.31 g) exhibited the lowest fruit weight, whereas \u27Triomphe de Vienne\u27 produced very large fruits with an average weight of 254.4 g. The highest total sugar content was recorded in ⟺lse Pituralka\u27 (138.5 g/kg FW), followed by \u27Hartilian\u27, \u27Poire de Cure\u27 and \u27Nordhäuser Winterflorelle\u27. In contrast, the lowest total acid content was observed in \u27Triomphe de Vienne\u27 and \u27Nordhäuser Winterflorelle\u27, resulting in a high sugar-to-acid ratio (S/A) and, consequently, a sweet perceived flavor. The more acidic cultivars, characterized by lower S/A ratios, included \u27Starkrimson\u27, \u27Santa Maria\u27, \u27President Drouard\u27, \u27Poire de Cure\u27 and \u27Clapp’s Favorite\u27. The highest phenolic compound contents in the fruit flesh were detected in \u27Hartilian\u27, \u27Risovka\u27, \u27President Drouard\u27 and \u27Poire de Cure\u27 (58.77–82.12 mg/kg FW), whereas in the peel, the cultivars ⟺lse Pituralka\u27, \u27President Drouard\u27 and \u27Poire de Cure\u27 contained the highest phenolic levels (1291–2111 mg/kg FW). The characterization of old pear cultivars from a specific growing region is vital for assessing their quality, as they represent an excellent source of genetic diversity and are invaluable for breeding new cultivars

Quantitative methods have long been employed in archaeology, yet the application of machine learning techniques to archaeological data has only recently gained momentum. This paper presents an example of using machine learning to enrich datasets from the Late Antique cemetery Lajh in Kranj. Of 544 graves analysed, only 88 (16.2%) have anthropological sex determinations, largely due to early excavation practices where skeletal remains were not systematically preserved. To address this gap, we trained a logistic regression model on 69 graves characterised with both grave goods and anthropologically determined sex. Using the presence and quantity of 68 categories of grave goods, the model predicted sex labels for all the graves with grave goods and provided probability scores for each prediction. Reliable predictions (> 75% probability) were obtained for 188 graves, effectively expanding the dataset for further analysis. The model revealed meaningful patterns, for example, those associating specific grave goods with gender and the expression of gender in children’s burials. While the approach is limited by data quality, typological generalisations, and small training sets, it demonstrates how machine learning can highlight relationships between variables and provide additional perspectives on gender in mortuary contexts

Supercooled Goldstone bosons at the QCD chiral phase transition

No full text
We discuss a universal nonequilibrium enhancement of long-wavelength Goldstone bosons induced by quenches to the broken phase in Model G—the dynamical universality class of an O⁡(4) antiferromagnet and the chiral phase transition in QCD. Scaling arguments for the coarsening dynamics describing the formation of the chiral condensate predict a parametric enhancement in the infrared spectra of Goldstone bosons, a prediction confirmed by stochastic simulations of the transition. The details of the enhancement are determined by the nonlinear dynamics of a superfluid effective theory, which is a limit of Model G reflecting the broken O⁡(4) symmetry. Our results translate to a parametric enhancement of low-momentum pions in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC, which are underpredicted in current hydrodynamic models without critical dynamics

The Stress–strain state in the pelvis during sit-to-stand transfer

No full text
To achieve early mobilization of patients with unstable pelvic fractures, the osteosynthesis methods used must withstand the loads in the pelvis during everyday movements. There is currently no predictive tool to assess how suitable these methods are for this purpose. The development of such a tool requires an understanding of the effects of joint and muscle loads on the structural behavior of the pelvis during movement. To further this cause, the stress–strain state of the pelvis during a sit-to-stand transfer of a healthy adult male was analyzed. Muscle and joint reaction forces during the motion were predicted using a rigid-body musculoskeletal model. These loads were then utilized in the first-ever dynamic structural analysis of the pelvis during a sit-to-stand transfer using the finite element method. Several similarities in stress distributions during sit-to-stand transfer, gait, and standing were identified by comparing the finite element analysis results with literature. The common areas of increased stress between the three motions are the acetabular notch, the superior edge of the obturator foramen, the attachments of the gluteus maximus on the ilium, and the lesser sciatic notch. The results also provide important insights into global behavior of the pelvic ring and indicate the locations of concentrated stress during sit-to-stand transfer

In recent years, immigration has become a focal point in political science, prompting a substantial body of literature. This study seeks to contribute to the discourse by investigating the impact of education (X) – an influential socio-demographic factor – on attitudes towards immigration (Y) in Hungary. To qualify the results, the influence of political alignment and key socio-demographic factors – including gender, age and religiosity –, are analysed as control variables. The study also considers how political alignment, and age may interact with education to shape these attitudes. Results from multiple linear regression models indicate that higher educational level correlates with more positive attitudes toward immigrationhowever, the association is conditional by political alignment and age. The study employs data from the European Social Survey (ESS), with a particular focus on Hungary during 2020-2022 (ESS-Round 10), to contribute to the understanding of the relationship between educational levels and attitudes towards immigration.V zadnjih letih je priseljevanje postalo osrednja točka raziskovanja v politični znanosti, kar je spodbudilo obsežno literaturo.

The thesis examines the spatial and demographic development of Bizovik and the transformation of its architectural identity. The aim of the research was to determine how this former rural settlement has changed over time to become part of the urban system of Ljubljana. In the 21st century, Bizovik has been marked by numerous new residential buildings, particularly terraced houses and semi-detached houses. These, along with extensive renovations, have influenced both the appearance and the functioning of the once-rural settlement. In the second half of the 20th century, the variety of activities increased, as the settlement gradually transitioned from an agricultural to a craft-oriented one, and today, residential use predominates. Since the end of the 19th century, Bizovik has experienced population growth. Through a survey of local residents, I investigated their attitudes toward the living environment and examined possible differences between locals and new residents. The results showed that all residents rate the quality of life in Bizovik highly. The main advantages highlighted were the proximity to nature and the city, while one of the most commonly mentioned disadvantages was the insufficient connection to the city’s public transport system (LPP). Special attention was given to the new developments in the 21st century. Different types of residential construction have impacted the image of the settlement and disrupted the formerly harmonious spatial unity

Josip Vilfan and Engelbert Besednjak: Between the Congress of European Nationalities and the Pan-European Movement

No full text
In the turbulent aftermath of the First World War, when newly drawn European borders ignited profound political and ethnic tensions, Josip Vilfan (1878–1955) and Engelbert Besednjak (1894–1968) brought the question of the Slovene minority in the Julian March into the wider European debate. As president of the Congress of European Nationalities (1925–1938), Vilfan embedded minority rights within the discourse of international law, while Besednjak, through forceful speeches in the Italian parliament and extensive press activity, exposed the consequences of fascist denationalisation policies. Both recognised in Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi’s Pan-European Movement an early blueprint for a federated Europe founded on cultural diversity. Their complementary legal and moral commitment laid crucial groundwork for the post-war European standards governing the protection of national minorities
