Influence of La doping on the magnetic properties of the two-dimensional spin-gapped system SrCu2_2(BO3_3)2_2

    No full text
Doping of the two-dimensional dimer antiferromagnet SrCu2_2(BO3_3)2_2 has long been proposed as a potential route toward realizing resonating valence bond superconductivity in this systemhowever, experimental progress has remained limited. This study explores the effects of La doping on the ground state of SrCu2_2(BO3_3)2_2 and reports the first flux growth of Sr1x_{1−x}Lax_xCu2_2(BO3_3)2_2 single crystals with nominal doping levels up to x = 0.15. Powder X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirm the successful incorporation of La on the Sr sites within the same tetragonal Ioverline4overline 42m structure, although the effective doping was found to be <50% of the nominal concentration. La doping induces systematic changes in the magnetic properties of SrCu2_2(BO3_3)2_2, with a reduction of the effective spin gap from 28.2 K for the undoped sample to 20.3 K for x = 0.15, as determined from the low-temperature magnetic susceptibility. The X-band electron spin resonance measurements reveal the emergence of unpaired Cu2+^{2+} spins, which develop antiferromagnetic correlations below ∼5.5 K. These findings corroborate the breaking of the local spin dimers in SrCu2_2(BO3_3)2_2 induced by La doping. No superconductivity is observed across the entire doping range studied

To address the ever-increasing need for more learner-centred teaching approaches in higher education, a study was conducted to explore students’ perceptions of problem-based learning (PBL) in an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course at the Faculty of Public Administration, University of Ljubljana. This was the first time students experienced this approach in their classes at the faculty. 73 responses to an open-ended question about PBL were analysed, applying text mining techniques conducted in the Orange software tool. First, the most frequent words and phrases expressed in students’ responses were determined and visualized using a word cloud. Next, sentiment analysis was carried out to identify the emotional tone behind the responses, further enhanced by an analysis based on Ekman’s model to discern dominant emotions. Finally, key themes were aligned with theoretical concepts of PBL and divided into positive and negative categories. More than 95% of students’ responses were overwhelmingly positive, expressing feelings of joy and high satisfaction with the new method. Even though students’ perceptions may be influenced by various factors, such as the quality of teaching, the rapport between the teacher and the students as well as the students’ background, the findings of this study suggest that PBL may be very effective in ESP teaching, particularly in the field of public administration. Learning evolves through solving real-life problems, providing ample opportunities to develop language skills relevant to students’ needs and future endeavours. Glavne teme so bile ob koncu usklajene s teoretskimi zasnovami problemskega učenja in razdeljene v pozitivno in negativno skupino. Študentje so izrazili občutke veselja in bili z novo metodo poučevanja zelo zadovoljni.

Honest Design. The Sociological Aspect of Honest Design and the Role of the Graphic Designer

Namen kapitala je njegova večja prepoznavnost in večji zaslužek, kar sta glavni karakteristiki neoliberalnega kapitalizma, z zelo malo iskrenosti in dobronamernosti. The master\u27s thesis examines the influence of graphic design through a sociological framework, where design, as seen through images and forms, is part of our everyday lives and plays an important role in understanding relationships in society. By taking into account the social and cultural context of design work, graphic designers can more effectively create works that are more relevant to their target audience. Given the ubiquity of design, we must ask ourselves about its relevance and responsibility. If it appears everywhere, what is the visual responsibility of the material, what is the responsibility of graphic designers (referred to as designers) and clients to be ethical (referred to as honest) to themselves, their work, and ultimately to society? Graphic design is a profession that most often operates in advertising and is strongly intertwined with capital, the purpose of which is greater recognition and greater profit, which are the main characteristics of neoliberal capitalism, with very little honesty and good intentions. We will examine the relationship between capital and design and the role of cultural intermediaries. We will look at the concept of spectacle (Debord, 1967), and how contemporary society is dominated by images that create artificial needs, impose consumerism, and thus distort social life. In this master\u27s thesis, we will examine whether honest graphic design can exist in the age of globalized capitalism, what are the possibilities, and what ethical rules, codes, and laws exist. The aim of this thesis is to address the lack of sociological knowledge in the field of design, its importance, and its impact on society

Magistrsko delo obravnava razvoj celovitega sistema za avtomatsko programiranje, testiranje in kalibracijo elektronskih vezij za sledenje in telemetrijo plovil. The master\u27s thesis discusses the development of a comprehensive system for automatic programming, testing, and calibration of electronic circuits used for vessel tracking and telemetry. The system was developed for the needs of the company Sentinel Marine Solutions, where annual production is increasing from 1,000 to an expected 5,000 units. The developed system enables simultaneous testing of two circuits, which is an entire production panel. It enables automatic software uploading, current consumption testing, digital and analog input testing, analog-to-digital converter calibration, and verification of GPS and GSM signal strength. A modular architecture was implemented, allowing testing of three device versions (BM50, BM50 Lite, BM50 Pro) with minimal modifications. The system was successfully deployed in production in February 2024 and has completed more than 12,000 tests to date. It has achieved high reliability with no false positive results, ensuring product quality and reducing warranty claim costs

    Geoekonomsko pozicioniranje polperiferije

he article explains Slovenia’s geoeconomic positioning amid the intensifying US–China rivalry. Drawing on a critical political economy framework and the literature on growth models, the concept of geoeconomic exposure is introduced to illustrate how Slovenia’s export-led economy – particularly its reliance on the German automotive industry – influences foreign policy. The article reconstructs the emergent (and contradictory) push for government-supported ‘internationalisation’ of the Slovenian economy towards China spearheaded by the auto industry in search of diversification away from flailing German car giants and towards (Chinese) electric vehicle supply chains, thus shedding light on the elite’s strategising in the EU periphery.Članek razlaga geoekonomsko pozicioniranje Slovenije v kontekstu čedalje intenzivnejše tekmovalnosti med ZDA in Kitajsko.

Habitat effects on the microbiome and ionome of selected hyperaccumulating pennycress species (Noccaea spp.)

Hyperaccumulating plants are characterized by their tolerance and ability to accumulate otherwise toxic concentration of metal(loid)s, yet the role of the microbiome remains poorly understood. In Slovenia, two zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) species occur naturally: Noccaea caerulescens and N. praecox, both of which grow at the non-metalliferous site in Lokovec, while N. praecox also occurs at the metalliferous site in Žerjav, polluted with Zn, Cd and lead (Pb). The aim of this study was to investigate the microbiome, transcriptome, metabolome, and metal accumulation, and to assess the effects of plant host and environment on plant responses under natural and controlled conditions. Two experimental approaches were used: (i) natural populations from non-metalliferous and metalliferous sites and (ii) a transplant experiment in which seeds of both N. praecox ecotypes were planted in Lokovec and Žerjav substrates. Whole plants, including roots and rhizosphere, were sampled for root-associated microbiome, leaf transcriptome and metabolome profiling, and determination of Zn, Cd and Pb in leaves. In natural populations, the root and rhizosphere microbiomes of the two species from Lokovec did not differ, whereas the microbiomes of N. praecox ecotypes were taxonomically and functionally distinct. The leaf transcriptome and metabolome analyses revealed genes and metabolites associated with high metal concentrations, including pathways involved in glutathione metabolism, phenylpropanoid and flavonoid biosynthesis, with species- and environment-specific patterns. In the transplant experiment, transfer to a different substrate led to changes in the diversity and relative abundance of microbial taxa, particularly in the rhizosphere. In the metalliferous substrate, higher Zn concentrations were measured in the leaves of the Lokovec ecotype compared to the Žerjav ecotype, and differences in the spatial distribution of Zn within leaves were also observed. The results of both experiments highlight the complexity of hyperaccumulation and emphasise the important role of ecotype selection for optimising phytoremediation

Nutritional practices and identities in fitness culture: a content analysis on Instagram and TikTok

    No full text
V tem okviru delo osvetljuje načine, kako digitalne platforme prek vizualnih in besedilnih strategij vplivajo na oblikovanje prehranskih norm in identitetnih praks. Zaključek poudari pomen discipline, zdrave prehrane in implicitnega poudarka na telesu. The master\u27s thesis examines how content on social networks Instagram and Tiktok co-create dietary practices and shape identity positions within fitness culture. Although the impact of social networks on dietary habits is the subject of numerous studies, most studies focus on broader dietary trends, on adolescents as a vulnerable group, or on eating disorders. Less attention is paid to the specific intersection between fitness culture, dietary practices, and digital representations, although this space marks contemporary discourses about the body, health, and lifestyle. There is insufficient research on how these processes manifest within fitness culture, where food is understood not only as a source of energy, but also as a means to achieve aesthetic goals, express self-discipline, and signal status. Through theoretical research and content analysis, the results show that dietary practices act as status markers that are transformed into symbolic capital through platforms. In this context, the work sheds light on the ways in which digital platforms influence the formation of dietary norms and identity practices through visual and textual strategies. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of discipline, healthy eating, and the implicit gift of the body

Coupling anisotropic curvature and nematic order

    No full text
This study theoretically investigates how anisotropic curved membrane components (CMCs) control vesicle morphology through curvature sensing, nematic alignment, topological defects and volume constraints. By comparing arc- and saddle-shaped CMCs, we identify a rich spectrum of steady-state phases. For fully CMC-covered vesicles, arc-shaped components drive a pearling-to-cylinder transition as nematic interactions strengthen, while on partially CMC-covered vesicles the saddle-shaped CMCs stabilize necks between the convex regions of bare membrane. We map the steady-state shapes of vesicles partially covered by arc- and saddle-shaped CMCs, exposing how different vesicle shapes depend on the interplay between nematic interactions and volume constraints, revealing several novel phases. By investigating the in-plane nematic field, we find that topological defects consistently localize to high-curvature regions, revealing how intrinsic and deviatoric curvature effects cooperate in membrane remodeling. These findings establish a unified framework for understanding how proteins and lipid domains with anisotropic intrinsic curvature shape cellular structures—from organelle morphogenesis to global cell shape

Microwave photonic techniques in phase-noise measurements of microwave sources

    No full text
Microwave photonics has recently come to the forefront as a valuable approach to generating, processing, and measuring signals in high-performance domains such as communication, radar, and timing systems. Recent studies have introduced a range of photonics-based phase-noise analyzers (PNAs) that utilize a variety of architectures, including phase detection, frequency discrimination, and hybrid mechanisms that combine optical with electronic processing. This review focuses on microwave photonic techniques for phase-noise measurement based on the fiber-optic delay-line method, by exploring their fundamental principles, system design frameworks, and performance indicators. The fiber-optic delayline method is examined as the core architecture, due to the exceptionally low loss and wide bandwidth of the optical fiber, which enable long delays and high measurement sensitivity. Through the integration of insights garnered from recent publications, our objective is to deliver a comprehensive understanding of the strengths and limitations associated with fiber-optic delay-line-based PNAs and to pinpoint new and promising areas for advancing research in the field of oscillator metrology
