Building operation of battery storage and solar cells incommercial buildings
The use of solar panels and battery storage systems is increasing as part of the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Battery storage is still relatively underutilized despite its potential for both the power grid and property owners. This thesis investigates the implementation and economic potential of solar panels and battery storage in a commercial building in Karlskrona, Sweden. A case study is conducted with three scenarios: no technological systems, only solar panels and a combination of battery storage and solar panels. The analysis includes calculations of net present value and the payback-method. The results from the calculations of the case study are used in a sensitivity analysis that examines different revenue scenarios to simulate real outcomes based on varying conditions. The study also examines relevant regulations, insurance requirements and technical considerations for implementation. The results show that solar panels reduce electricity costs mainly during the summer and generate revenue from excess electricity sold to the grid. Battery storage is implemented theoretically and offers value through participation in energy markets and ancillary services. The results from the payback method and net present value shows promising results for the combination of solar panels and battery storage, with a short payback time and high net present value. Yet the implementation of the technologies is still affected by technical, legal and financial challenges. This includes high initial investment costs and safety regulations related to fire and electricity
Role of Staphylococcus aureus colonization in burn patients
Objectives: Staphylococcus aureus is an important pathogen in burn patients and contributes to mortality, however, the role of colonization with S. aureus in the course of the disease is less well described. Methods: The study aimed to determine the frequency of S. aureus colonization in 80 patients treated in a national burn center in Uppsala, Sweden, during the first ten days of hospitalization in relation to length of stay, number of days before antibiotic treatment started and mortality; additionally, epidemiological relationship and phylogeny were analyzed. Results: A total of 38/80 (47.5%) patients tested positive for S. aureus upon admission, while 47 out of 65 patients who completed the 10-day study period (72%) were colonized with S. aureus. Patients who were colonized at admission tended to stay longer at the burn center, particularly when admitted with more severe conditions corresponding to a rBaux score >70 (p=0.05, R2=0.09). Patients carrying isolates of phylogroup 2 received antibiotic treatment approximately one day later than patients with isolates belonging to phylogroup 1 (p<0.05, R2= 0.09). Conclusions: The study findings emphasize that screening for S. aureus colonization in burn patients upon admission, particularly in critically injured patients, could prove beneficial in optimizing antibiotic therapy.
Reading Speed and Reading Comprehension in Light and Dark Mode : Does Light Mode Affect Reading Speed or Reading Comprehension?
Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur ljust och mörkt läge påverkar läshastighet och läsförståelse vid digital läsning. I och med att människan spenderar mer tid framför skärmar och att det blir vanligare att kunna välja mellan dessa lägen, så är det intressant att veta om valet av dessa faktiskt har någon påverkan på prestation vid läsning. Undersökningen genomfördes som ett kvantitativt experiment där 32 deltagare läste fyra olika texter i varierande ljuslägen, samt besvarade läsförståelsefrågor till dessa texter. Resultaten visade att det inte fanns någon signifikant skillnad i varken läshastighet eller läsförståelse. Det visades dessutom att det inte fanns någon koppling mellan deltagarnas vanor av ljusläge och deras prestation i dessa. Slutsatsen är att det inte verkar finnas någon klar skillnad i prestation baserat på ljusläge, och att användare istället kan använda det ljusläge de föredrar utan någon negativ påverkan på läshastighet eller läsförståelse.
Closing the Rainwater Gap: Evaluating Rainwater collection in Gotland’s municipal Infrastructure
This study investigates the organisational and systemic causes limiting effective rainwater collection within Region Gotland’s municipal infrastructure. As climate variability increases and water stress intensifies, rainwater collection has gained renewed attention as a tool for municipal water resilience. Despite documented benefits and supportive policy discourse, Region Gotland’s decentralised systems remain underdeveloped and inconsistently applied. The study draws on seven semi-structured interviews with municipal employees, of which five were at Region Gotland, and two were comparative interviews with representatives from Kalmar Municipality and Flanders. There has also been a document analysis of planning reports, technical data, and strategy papers. The analysis focused on assessing the current performance of rainwater systems, and how it could be further developed by identifying institutional and operational challenges and tracing these back to underlying structural causes. Findings reveal multiple recurring issues: fragmented laws and regulations with no description of process or existence of a process owner. It also finds weak integration of rainwater into planning and financial incentives, lack of performance measurement, and lack of consensus regarding management. These barriers are not technical in nature but stem from gaps in unclear processes. Comparative insights illustrate that municipalities with clearer process ownership, embedded performance indicators, and regulatory mandates have more effective and integrated systems. The study explores the organisational process, ownership process orientation and the performance of rainwater systems in Region Gotland. It concludes the need for clearer organisational structures, process ownership, and clear regulations and laws to bridge the gap between policy goals and implementation. These insights may support other municipalities facing similar decentralised water management challenges under climate stress.Denna studie undersöker de organisatoriska och systemmässiga orsakerna till begränsad prestanda i regnvatteninsamling inom Region Gotlands kommunala infrastruktur. Regnvatteninsamling är nära kopplad till hållbar vattenförsörjning och ökad kommunal vatten resiliens, särskilt i geologiskt sårbara områden som Gotland, där grundvatten resurserna är begränsade och klimatvariationer skapar ytterligare belastning. Trots dokumenterade fördelar och stödjande policy intentioner förblir systemet decentraliserat, underutvecklat och ojämnt tillämpat. Undersökningen baseras på sju semistrukturerade intervjuer med tjänstepersoner inom Region Gotland, varav två jämförande intervjuer med en representant från Kalmar kommun och en från regionen Flanders, samt dokumentanalys av planeringsdokument, tekniska data och styrdokument. Analysen fokuserar på att kartlägga nuläget, identifiera institutionella och operativa utmaningar samt spåra dessa tillbaka till strukturella grundorsaker. Resultaten avslöjar flera återkommande problem: fragmenterade lagar och förordningar utan beskrivning av processer eller existens av process ägare. Studien finner också svag integration av regnvatten i planering och ekonomiska incitament, brist på mätning och brist på konsensus kring hantering av regnvatteninsamling . Dessa hinder är inte av teknisk karaktär utan härrör från luckor i oklara processer.. Jämförande insikter illustrerar att kommuner med tydligare processägarskap, inbäddade KPIs och regleringsmandat har mer effektiva och integrerade system. Studien undersöker den organisatoriska processägarskaps processens inriktning och prestandan hos regnvatten insamling system hos Region Gotland. Den drar slutsatsen att det finns behov av tydligare organisationsstrukturer, processägarskap samt tydliga förordningar och lagar för att överbrygga klyftan mellan policymål och implementering. Dessa insikter kan stödja andra kommuner som står inför liknande decentraliserade vattenhantering sutmaningar under klimatpåfrestningar
Electro-magnetic design and analysis of the magnetic system for the low energy nuSTORM
The LEnuSTORM initiative at ESSnuSB requires a racetrack storage ring that can confine 600 MeV/cmuon beam with ±10% momentum spread while relying as far as possible on normal conductingmagnets. We opted for a dual approach in our design project: (i) an iron-dominated H-type dipoleaccelerator magnet, able to deliver the sought reference bending field, and (ii) a complete ring latticethat minimises particle loss for on- and off-momentum beams. Using CERN-ROXIE we optimised a 2-dimensional cross-section for a 400 mm-diameter aperturedipole. With 5 A/mm2 copper cables (10 008 A total) the magnet produces 1.516 T in the Good-FieldRegion while holding the integrated B-field error below the order of 10−3 over a 150–160 mm radius.The iron yoke saturation stays around 1.9 T, ensuring small head-room for current trimming withoutdisrupting its linear properties and thus degrading its quality. The ring optics were developed in MATLAB as well as in MAD-X. The main difficulty in designing thering optics with normal-conducting dipoles was suppressing the dispersion function efficiently. Hence,several designs have been considered and presented, each outperforming the others in various areas.The smallest beam size was obtained for the on-momentum design and had a maximum of 52.77 mmwhich accounts for 99.55% of the particles. To account for particles with moment deviation, a seconddesign is presented. This design is stable for particles with a moment deviation up to 6% but onlyaccount for 97.73% of particles when considering the beam size. Both of these design have a tightmagnetic configuration, leaving little room for sextupole correction at a later stage. Hence, a thirddesign is presented, using a DBA-cell the dispersion is suppressed at the end of the arc while containinglarger drift spaces between the magnets to accommodate sextupoles. However, this comes at the costof a larger beam size of 85.6 mm, which account for 92%. Improving Internal Logistics : A Case Study at SSAB Finspång on How Process Mapping Can Enhance Internal Logistics Flows in the Manufacturing Industry
This study investigates the internal logistics flow within a manufacturing facility, with a specific focus on the interactions between planning, logistics, and production. The aim is to identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and improvement opportunities using process mapping tools grounded in Lean and Total Quality Management (TQM). The research combines empirical data from interviews, observations, and a survey, and is guided by a systems-thinking perspective.Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and process analysis reveal that internal handovers, redundant transports, and inconsistent communication are key obstacles to efficiency. These findings align with Lean theory, which emphasizes the elimination of non-value-adding activities such as waiting, transport, and excess inventory. The analysis also highlights a lack of standardized procedures and digital support, which contributes to delays and person-dependent coordination.The proposed improvements such as pull-based scheduling, real-time data integration, and layout optimization are expected to reduce lead times, increase resource efficiency, and improve working conditions. The results show that mapping current processes not only uncovers structural weaknesses but also creates a foundation for strategic improvements. The study concludes that enhanced synchronization between core functions is essential for achieving a stable and resilient internal logistics flow.Denna studie undersöker det interna logistikflödet i en tillverkningsverksamhet med särskilt fokus på samverkan mellan planering, logistik och produktion. Syftet är att identifiera flaskhalsar, ineffektivitet och förbättringsmöjligheter genom processkartläggning med stöd i Lean och Total Quality Management (TQM). Undersökningen bygger på empiriskt material från observationer, intervjuer och en enkät, och analyseras med hjälp av systemteoretiska perspektiv.Genom värdeflödeskartläggning (VSM) och processanalys synliggörs att brister i överlämningar, dubbeltransporter och informella kommunikationsvägar är centrala hinder för flödets effektivitet. Replacing Instruction with Discovery : Understanding the Impact of Inductive Gameplay on Hangul Writing System Acquisition
This thesis explores the potential of inductive gameplay as a method for teaching the Korean writing system, Hangul, through the development and evaluation of Language Bazaar, a puzzle-based educational game. Drawing on Game-Based Learning (GBL) and Inductive Learning Theory, the study investigates whether non-Korean speakers can acquire and retain Hangul’s syllabic block structure through discovery-based mechanics. A single group pre-post-test study was conducted with 23 participants, including gameplay observation and interviews. Results indicate that participants demonstrated measurable learning, particularly in recognizing basic letters, though many struggled with the transition to syllabic blocks. While time spent playing did not strongly correlate with test performance, qualitative data revealed that learners found the experience both challenging and enjoyable. The study highlights the motivational potential of game environments, though it also underlines the difficulty of balancing engagement with educational content. The results suggest the benefits inductive, game-based approaches can have on lowering barriers to entry in language learning
Cardiovascular protein profiling in patients with first-episode psychosis
Patients with schizophrenia have a threefold higher mortality from cardiovascular disease than people in the general population. Atherosclerosis is linked to immune activation, a process tentatively entwined with the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of schizophrenia. The aim of the present study was to investigate an extensive array of cardiovascular biomarkers in individuals experiencing their first episode of psychosis (FEP), either drug-na & iuml;ve or exposed to short-term antipsychotic treatment, alongside a group of healthy controls (HC). Using the OLINK Proximity Extension Assay, Cardiovascular II Panel, we analyzed plasma from 72 FEP patients, including 42 later diagnosed with schizophrenia and 54 HCs. Biomarker levels, that significantly differed between patients and controls, were correlated with symptom severity, cognitive performance and cardiovascular risk factors. Fifteen out of 92 cardiovascular biomarkers were higher in individuals with FEP compared to HC, and one biomarker was lower in FEP patients compared to HC. BMI, waist size, blood pressure, fp-glucose, HbA1c and serum lipid levels were similar between the groups. No correlations that held for multiple comparisons were seen between biomarker concentrations and symptom severity, cognitive performance or cardiovascular risk factors in FEP patients. Higher concentrations of several cardiovascular biomarkers were observed in individuals with FEP compared to in HC. This suggests that patients with FEP are at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease from the onset of psychosis, even before changes in traditional biomarkers are detectable. It underscores the need for innovative approaches to detect and monitor this risk early
