Mer än ett mästerskap : En kvalitativ studie om hur språk och kommunikation skapar, upprätthåller eller utmanar  könsroller i sammanhanget av FIFA World Cup 2022 och FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.

    No full text
This study aims to explore the potential differences in media coverage during the  FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 and FIFA World Cup 2022. The Swedish public service broadcast, better known as SVT, is the primary source for the  empirical material gathered for this study. The empirical material for the analysis consists of 10 articles published during the championships, five covering the Women’s World Cup and five covering the Men’s World Cup. The articles address similar areas of content and are analyzed based on the same semiotic grounds and tools, such as denotation and connotation, to ensure consistency in the comparison. The semiotic analysis is based on Barthes (1977) to examine the underlying connotations in the pictures of the articles. The goal of this study is to examine whether media coverage by SVT reflects gendered differences, as understood through gender theory based on Hinderman (1988) and Harvey (2019). Two perspectives are taken into practice in order to achieve a nuanced perspective on gender as a research theory for this analysis. The study uses  a multimodal critical discourse analysis as a method based on Foucaults (1977) and Halliday (1978) to explore how inequality and traditional gender roles are created, sustained or challenged by sports and its media coverage.  The result of the study showcases a difference in the portrayal of the championships by SVT. The analysis discovered underlying gender connotation and a noticeable male bias in SVT’s media coverage during the tournaments, which creates and sustains traditional gender roles aligned with previous studies regarding gender representation in sport and unequal media coverage. Lastly, the study was unable to identify clear measures taken by SVT to challenge gender stereotypes in sports publications or counteract traditional gender roles.

Replacing rifampicin with minocycline increases the activity of the treatment regimen for Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary disease in a dynamic hollow-fibre system

Objective: Mycobacterium avium complex bacteria cause chronic pulmonary disease (MAC-PD) in susceptible patients. The recommended treatment regimen (rifampicin, ethambutol and azithromycin) achieves 65% cure rates but with considerable toxicity and drug-drug interactions [[2], [3]]. Minocycline proved active in monotherapy experiments using the hollow-fibre model [4]. We compared the efficacy of the recommended regimen with a minocycline, ethambutol and azithromycin regimen using this model. Methods: Epithelial lining fluid pharmacokinetic (PK) profiles of the recommended regimen and minocycline, ethambutol, azithromycin regimen were simulated. THP-1 cells infected with M. avium ATCC 700898 were exposed to these regimens for 21 d. PK profiles were determined at d 0 and d 21. The pharmacodynamic effect was measured by determining bacterial densities at d 0, 3, 7, 14 and 21 for intra- and extracellular fractions. Emergence of macrolide-resistance was monitored by inoculating azithromycin-containing agar, MIC measurements and resistance mutation analysis. Results: The minocycline-containing regimen exhibited a 1.5 log10 CFU/mL lower bacterial burden than the recommended regimen at d 7, though both regimens lost effectiveness over time. Treatment failure in both arms was not linked to the emergence macrolide-resistance. PK profiles simulated in the model matched those in MAC-PD patients.  Conclusions: Replacing rifampicin with minocycline increased the antimycobacterial activity of the MAC-PD treatment regimen in the hollow-fibre model, without jeopardizing the prevention of macrolide-resistance. This promising minocycline-containing regimen is a candidate for inclusion in clinical trials. (c) 2024 The Author(s)

IPO vågen 2021 - Sätter VC’s bättre bolag på börsen?

    No full text

Auxiliary Field Methods for Spin Dependent Electron-Phonon Coupling : An investigation of magnetic configurations via path integrals

    No full text
Using a Hubbard–Holstein model, we investigate the consequences of adding spin dependence into the electron-phonon interaction through spin-orbit coupling. In particular, how one may be able to preserve ferromagnetism that is killed by classic spinless el-ph interactions, if one exploits said spin dependence. This is inspired by work showing chiral phonons could support such a notion and experiments in ferromagnetic chiral materials whose high classic el-ph interactions would not intuitively allow such a magnetic mode. From path integration methods, we introduce an auxiliary Hubbard–Stratonovich field as a means of understanding the model's spin and charge density via two separate approaches. First, we use a software implementation of a determinant quantum Monte Carlo and through which present simulation results. We then take a stationary phase approximation of an effective field theory to derive possible analytical insights. As the computational and analytical results are independent in terms of methodology, they provide two supporting narratives. We find the spin dependent el-ph coupling leads to nontrivial charge-spin configurations and strong evidence it can restore ferromagnetism, as hypothesized.

    No full text

The disservice of publishing preliminary results based on a premature hypothesis : Semmelweis' ordeal revisited

    No full text
In an interesting article, Dr Zuzana Parusniková claimed: (i) that Semmelweis’ colleagues did not recognise the importance of his animal experiments, (ii) that the resistance to Semmelweis’ hypothesis and results was due mainly to applying mono-causality and (iii) Semmelweis inability to communicate, (iv) that the New Vienna Medical School applied evidence-based medicine, and (v) that the philosophy of Karl Popper is the best interpretation of Semmelweis’ scientific approach. Here, we present some factual aspects of Semmelweis’ text from 1861 and discuss Dr Parusniková’s claims against this backdrop. We conclude that Semmelweis might intentionally have abstained from communicating his hypothesis and results between 1847 and 1849 – including the results from his animal experiments – as he thought that they would eventually be understood and accepted. Semmelweis’ hypothesis was that cadaveric matters and decaying particles were the cause of childbed fever and increased maternal mortality. This hypothesis might have been controversial, but we claim that the major reason for the resistance was eminence-based and induced by the publication of preliminary and suboptimal results, based on a premature version of his hypothesis. If the New Vienna Medical School had been influenced by evidence-based medicine, we believe that Semmelweis’ empirical results would have been accepted - as they were based on an almost randomised controlled trial - and if the results had not been associated with his hypothesis but instead had focused on a black box procedure. We agree that the philosophy of Popper might be appropriate when analysing Semmelweis’ scientific approach when abandoning low-level theories. However, to understand the resistance against Semmelweis’ hypothesis and results, it is not sufficient to refer to a Pickwickian discussion; a Kuhnian framework is more adequate

Continuous individual feedback to nurses at emergency medical dispatch centres : a stepped-wedge, interrupted time series analysis

    No full text
Background: Clinical feedback is often lacking in prehospital care, and while performance data is increasingly available to clinical and operational leadership, it is seldom made available to care providers themselves. In this study, we investigate the impact of a simple intervention consisting of the provision of monthly feedback reports via email to emergency medical dispatch nurses in three Swedish regions. Method: Individualised reports consisting of 14 measures divided into descriptive (eg, priority-setting and call times), process (eg, dispatch times and documentation completeness) and outcome (eg, over/under triage rate) categories were developed with staff and management input. Report delivery was implemented using a stepped-wedge design, and effects were evaluated using a hierarchical regression-based interrupted time series analysis. Results: 40 dispatchers were included in the study between March 2020 and October 2023, who handled a total of 246 353 incidents. Some impacts on documentation-related process measures were identified, with the odds of complete documentation increasing by 7.5% (95% CI 5.1 to 9.9) and the odds of having a documented contact reason increasing by 3.8% (1.5-5.9). These effects remained robust over the post-intervention period. Weaker impacts on outcome measures were identified which could be explained by a higher priority given to emergency medical dispatches overall. Conclusion: Providing performance data can influence care providers to adjust their behaviour to improve process-related quality metrics under their direct control. The intervention may also have induced nurses to more often upgrade the priority of their patients. Improving outcome metrics may however require more intensive, multifaceted interventions

A multi-tissue longitudinal proteomics study to evaluate the suitability of post-mortem samples for pathophysiological research

    No full text
Recent developments in mass spectrometry-based proteomics have established it as a robust tool for system-wide analyses essential for pathophysiological research. While post-mortem samples are a critical source for these studies, our understanding of how body decomposition influences the proteome remains limited. Here, we have revisited published data and conducted a clinically relevant time-course experiment in mice, revealing organ-specific proteome regulation after death, with only a fraction of these changes linked to protein autolysis. The liver and spleen exhibit significant proteomic alterations within hours post-mortem, whereas the heart displays only modest changes. Additionally, subcellular compartmentalization leads to an unexpected surge in proteome alterations at the earliest post-mortem interval (PMI). Additionally, we have conducted a comprehensive analysis of semi-tryptic peptides, revealing distinct consensus motifs for different organs, indicating organ-specific post-mortem protease activity. In conclusion, our findings emphasize the critical importance of considering PMI effects when designing proteomics studies, as these effects may significantly overshadow the impacts of diseases. Preferably, the samples should be taken in the operation room, especially for studies including subcellular compartmentalization or trans-organ comparison. In single-organ studies, the planning should involve careful control of PMI
