Contraceptive choices and satisfaction : a cross-sectional analysis of sociodemographic influences
Introduction: Investigating factors associated with contraceptive satisfaction is important to create a basis for tailored contraceptive counseling. In this study, we aimed to explore how sociodemographic characteristics affected women's level of satisfaction and choice of different contraceptive methods, using data collected during a randomized controlled trial (RCT) in the region & Ouml;rebro County, Sweden. Methods: This cross-sectional study utilized data from a previously conducted RCT. Eligible participants were women aged 20-40 years who sought contraceptive counseling. All women who participated in the RCT and completed a follow-up questionnaire were included in the analysis Results: Between February 2015 and March 2016, 1,946, participants were enrolled in the trial, with 1,198 (61.6%) completing the 2-month follow-up questionnaire. Overall, 81.3% of women reported being 'very satisfied' or 'satisfied' with their contraceptive method. Participants aged 27-40 years used long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) to a higher extent compared with those aged 20-26 years (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.92, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.44-2.56). Older age was associated with lower satisfaction (aOR 0.55, 95% CI 0.33-0.94). Participants with a body mass index (BMI) >= 25 more often used LARC (aOR 1.68, 95% CI 1.24-2.28) but were also more likely to report no use of contraceptives at all (aOR 1.56, 95% CI 1.01-2.43) compared with BMI < 25. The level of satisfaction tended to decrease with increasing BMI. Country of birth and educational level were not associated with satisfaction. Conclusions: The use of LARC was more common among women with BMI >= 25 and older women. While BMI, education, and place of birth did not affect satisfaction, women aged 27-40 reported lower satisfaction. These findings contrast with prior studies and highlight the complex sociodemographic influences on contraception experiences
Hantavirus co-circulation in common shrews (Sorex araneus) in Sweden
Shrews are primary hosts for mammalian hantaviruses and are thus considered to be important reservoirs for viruses, similar to rodents and bats. To explore the diversity of hantaviruses in Swedish common shrews (Sorex araneus), we investigated lung tissue from shrews collected between 2015 and 2017. The collection took place at three separate locations in south-central Sweden. Screening for hantaviruses was performed using two different approaches. (i) A total of 113 common shrews were investigated for hantaviruses by a pan-hantavirus L-gene reverse transcriptase PCR, and Sanger sequencing was performed on the 13 positive samples. (ii) In addition, 88 RNA samples were pooled into eight libraries subjected to RNA sequencing. The RNA sequencing data analysis, which focused specifically on identifying hantaviruses, revealed two divergent hantaviruses: the complete genome of an Altai virus (ALTV) and the partial genome of the Seewis virus. Evolutionary analysis revealed that Swedish ALTVs are closely related to Russian ALTVs but distinct from Finnish strains. On the contrary, the Swedish Seewis virus shares closer ancestry with Finnish Seewis virus strains. Given that these viruses were identified in several pools, Seewis virus and ALTV are likely circulating in Swedish common shrews. Supported by earlier studies, common shrews are probably a natural host for at least these two distinct hantaviruses
Between Nation And Diaspora : Navigating (Trans)national Identity Among Armenian Students in Istanbul and Beirut
This thesis examines how Armenian high school students in Istanbul and Beirut express and negotiate their identities as members of minority groups in these contexts. The Armenian communities in Turkey and Lebanon occupy different statuses within their countries: while Armenians in Turkey are a state-recognized religious minority under a centralized and assimilationist governance, those in Lebanon participate in a more pluralistic system that allows for cultural autonomy. Drawing on the Social Identity Approach, which integrates Tajfel’s Social Identity Theory and Turner’s Self-Categorization Theory, alongside frameworks from Contact Theory, collective memory and nationalism, the study investigates how Armenian students express ethnic and civic belonging, interact with outgroup members, engage with collective memory and understand the role of their schools in shaping identity. Employing a qualitative comparative case study design, the research is based on 19 in-depth student interviews across two Armenian schools. The analysis reveals both shared and context-specific expressions of identity. While students in Beirut express comfort with their civic identity, it is their ethnic identity that remains most central. This is shaped by a context of political and communal autonomy. In contrast, students in Istanbul often negotiate their identities more cautiously in response to cultural constraints and historical silencing. A key finding concerns how group boundaries are constructed and enforced. Students in Beirut exhibit stronger group cohesion and clearer expectations of cultural conformity. In contrast, group boundaries in Istanbul are more flexible, allowing for greater individual variation and openness toward hybrid identities. Armenian schools emerge as central sites where collective memory, cultural transmission and emotional belonging are sustained. The discussion reflects on how ethnic identity can coexist with civic and global identities when supported by flexible educational spaces. It argues that minority schools, while vital for cultural preservation, can also adapt to changing realities by embracing integration and transnational belonging. This thesis contributes to the fields of Sociology of Education, Diaspora Studies and Minority Studies by foregrounding minority youth voices and showing how schools both reflect and challenge national narratives

Nature's keepers : Working families and the economy of earthly objects
This article develops a historical anthropology of craftspeople in the sciences through the story of the family Wunder, who for three generations (from 1771 to 1832) ran a prolific trade in rare plants and large mammal fossils from their workshop in the mountains of Upper Franconia. Studies of scientific homes and families have had an extraordinary impact on the history of science, showing how experiments and museums were so housed as to model highly exclusive scientific publics, and how projects of inquiry were shared among spouses, children, and servants. But this literature has rarely stepped outside of elite, urban homes and country estates. Doing so demonstrates how material flows conventionally oriented around metropolitan institutions could hinge on the spatial logistics of post roads, highland footpaths, inns and taverns – and the families who minded them. Viewed from the village, new university and museum institutions rose in reciprocal action with rural projects, otherwise excluded from the story of a liberal-bourgeois public sphere and the emergence of the modern natural sciences (Naturwissenschaften). I argue further for a thick description of science among craftspeople and peasants, suggesting nature’s keepers as a useful social category for actors involved in the everyday production of the economies and spatial logistics of natural inquiry. Across Central and Alpine Europe, inns, workshops, and country lanes composed a substructure of scientific life that materially shaped natural history and its theoretical horizons in “deep time,” directing the movements of earthly objects and educated travelers

The area of Nothamn, located in the Bergslagen lithotectonic unit within the Baltic Shield, consists of agreat variety of exposed mafic, intermediate, and felsic rocks. To investigate the origin and evolution ofthe rocks, geochemical analysis of representative samples was carried out, to assess magmatic processessuch as fractional crystallisation, partial melting, and crustal assimilation, i.e. elevated ratios of Nb/Ybversus Th/Yb. Major and trace element data, including rare earth element patterns and tectonicdiscrimination diagrams, indicate that the mafic rocks were derived from an enriched mantle source,with indication of crustal assimilation. The intermediate samples show transitional characteristics, someshow characteristics of having evolved through fractional crystallisation, while others were influencedby magma mixing. In contrast, the felsic samples display distinct geochemical trends, consistent withformation through partial melting of crustal material in a subduction zone. Alteration indices furtherreflect amphibolite facies metamorphism. The results suggest that the lithologies of the Nothamn arearecord a complex magmatic history involving both mantle and crust derived processes, which align withthe tectonic history of the Bergslagen lithotectonic unit and the impact of the Svecofennian orogenyduring the Paleoproterozoic era.Området kring Nothamn, beläget i Bergslagens litotektoniska enhet inom den Fennoskandiska skölden,består av en stor variation av exponerade mafiska, intermediära och felsiska bergarter. Huvud- och spårämnesdata, inklusive diagram med sällsyntajordartsmetaller och tektoniska diskrimineringsdiagram, indikerar att de mafiska bergarterna härrördefrån en anrikad mantelkälla, med indikationer på assimilering av kontinental skorpa, till exempel genomförhöjda Nb/Yb versus Th/Yb-värden. De intermediära proverna uppvisar varierande egenskaper, vissavisar tecken på att ha utvecklats genom fraktionerad kristallisation medan andra har påverkats av fleraolika magmor. Jämförelse av jordskorpans struktur i östra Alperna och västra Karpaterna med mottagningsfunktionsavbildning
The Eastern Alps and the Western Carpathians are two adjacent segments of the Alpine–Carpathian orogenic system, sharing a common geodynamic history linked to the closure of the Alpine Tethys and the collision between the European and Adriatic plates. Despite this shared evolution, their crustal architectures differ significantly, reflecting contrasting tectonic processes. This thesis aims to investigate and compare the crustal structure of these two mountain belts using teleseismic receiver function imaging, with a particular focus on the Eastern Alps. A total of 57 broadband seismic stations located between latitudes 45° and 51° and longitudes 13.18°–13.56° were used for data acquisition in the Eastern Alps. Receiver Functions (RFs) were computed from over 800–1200 global teleseismic events per station. Of these, a subset of 48 stations and in average 97 high quality events per station were selected for Common Conversion Point (CCP) migration. The resulting seismic images highlight key crustal and upper mantle features across the region, including the Moho discontinuity, intracrustal reflectors, and the Tauern Window. The CCP profiles reveal a thickened crust beneath the Eastern Alps, with a diffuse, vertically extensive Moho zone beneath the Tauern Window—interpreted as a crustal root and exhumed European lower crust. In contrast, the Western Carpathians, based on previous studies, show a thinner crust, clearer Moho steps, and no evidence for a comparable exhumation wedge. These contrasting features suggest a fundamentally different orogenic architecture: a bivergent structure in the Eastern Alps versus a more asymmetric crustal configuration in the Western Carpathians. This work represents a first step toward a unified seismic imaging approach for both regions, using consistent processing methods to enable direct comparison. Although the CCP images are preliminary and require further refinement, they already provide new insights into the deep structure and tectonic evolution of the Eastern Alps, and serve as a foundation for future comparative studies across the Alpine–Carpathian system
