Reimagining ELT: nomadic knowledging and nomadic languaging
Drawing on an ethnographic study with the Mongolian nomadic herders - xууч xөөрөх - loosely translated as “nomadic reminiscing circle,” this article seeks to expand the growing decolonial languaging turn in ELT. It introduces the intertwined land-based cosmologies of “nomadic knowledging” and “nomadic languaging,” drawing on a philosophy where life, nature, time, language, and identity are understood as inherently fluid but attuned to the cycles of the land. Yet, this fluidity exists in tension with the contextual rootedness - the need for linguistic boundaries to protect nomadic knowledge systems. English is welcomed into the Mongolian nomadic cosmologies only when it enters with humility, respect and care. This tension highlights that the languaging turn in ELT must attend not only to fluidity but also to rootedness. Just as nomads adapt to ever-changing environments, ELT must remain responsive to shifting identities, evolving language practices and contextualized local practices
From Ethnomedicine to Evidence: A Preclinical Evaluation of Cannabinoid Synergy and Endocannabinoidome Targeting in Murine Models of Inflammatory Bowel Disease
From Ethnomedicine to Evidence: This PhD thesis investigated how cannabis-based medicines can be transformed from traditional remedies into evidence-based therapies for inflammatory bowel disease. Using preclinical models, it demonstrated that cannabinoids, alone or in synergy with existing drugs, reduce gut inflammation, improve health outcomes, and minimize side effects. These findings highlight the promise of targeting endocannabinoid system as a safer, multi-targeted approach, offering hope for more effective future IBD treatments
Transforming rural childhoods in Bangladesh through learning English: The role of government
Improving children's educational, social and economic opportunities in a country like Bangladesh requires English
proficiency. In rural Bangladesh, particularly in Mazu and Madhobpur villages, however, children's development
is frequently hindered by limited access to proper English education. This study examines the role of the
government in ensuring equitable access to learning English and its effects on rural children. In 2025, a mixed-
method approach was implemented which involved household surveys, semi-structured interviews with parents
and teachers, and policy analysis. The findings show that although free textbooks and compulsory English classes
have expanded access to English education, significant challenges remain. Some of the problems faced are lack of
teacher training, scarce resources and weak digital and physical infrastructure. These obstacles hinder the
transformative potential of English education for disadvantaged children in rural Bangladesh. The study highlights
the importance of stronger government support, better resource allocation and community engagement in
promoting empowerment, cognitive growth and social mobility. Policy reforms are necessary to ensure that all
rural children have equal opportunities to benefit from English education in line with Sustainable Development

AI governance on young consumers in higher education: a content analysis of policies for generative AI
Purpose As generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies continue to advance and become more prevalent in higher education, addressing the ethical concerns associated with their use is essential. This study emphasizes the need for robust AI governance as more young consumers increasingly use generative AI for various applications. This paper aims to examine the ethical challenges posed by generative AI and review the AI policies in higher education to regulate young consumers use of generative AI, focusing on the ethical use of AI from foundational principles to sustainable governance. Design/methodology/approach Through a content analysis of literature on generative AI policies in higher education published between 2020 and 2024, this research aims to explore a more holistic approach to integrating generative AI into the educational process. The analysis examines academic policies and governance framework from 28 journal papers regarding generative AI tools in higher education. Data were collected from publicly accessible sources, such as Scopus, Emerald Insights, ProQuest, Web of Science and ScienceDirect. Findings This study analyses ten elements of the governance framework to identify potential AI governance and policy setting, benefiting stakeholders aiming at enhancing the regulatory framework of generative AI use in higher education. The discussions indicate a generally balanced yet cautious approach to integrating generative AI technology, especially considering ethical issues, inherent limitations and data privacy concerns. Originality/value The findings contribute to ongoing discussions to strengthen universities’ responses to new academic challenges posed by the use of generative AI and promote high AI ethical standards across educational sectors
Machine learning (ML)-based analysis of significant surface elevation changes in operational tailings storage facilities
Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) are complex and dynamic infrastructures that require continuous monitoring to prevent geotechnical failures. Traditional manual monitoring approaches lack the spatial and temporal resolution needed for effective risk assessment. This paper proposes a Machine Learning (ML) framework to predict significant elevation changes in operational TSFs using high-resolution Digital Surface Models (DSMs) derived from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry. A multi-stage methodology was implemented, including DSM detrending, DoD (DSMs of Differencing) generation, feature engineering, and the development of ML models focused on zones of significant deformation. Among several ML algorithms evaluated, XGBoost achieved the highest predictive performance, with R 2 values of 0.708 and 0.643 respectively, for the negative and positive elevation change for the test data. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis revealed the importance of spatial coordinates and time-related interaction features. These results highlight the potential of data-driven models to enhance proactive TSF risk management by enabling predictive insights into deformation behaviour
Experiences and Support Needs of Australian University Students Who Have Experienced Bereavement
Up to 30% of students in higher education are in the first 12 months since bereavement. Grieving while in higher education is linked with significant impacts on academic achievement, and many students face challenges staying enrolled. It is hoped that the outcomes of this thesis will encourage higher education institutions to refine and adapt their services to address the current issues presented among their students and ensure they align with the needs of grieving students
A Courtyard Conversation, or a Zoetological Approach to the Thinking of Things
Inserted into the entrance to a small courtyard inhabited by four families in Haiyan village, Kunming, China, the work Symphony of the Everyday – Sunset Sonata employs subtle interventions in the form of light, sound and kinetic objects to reveal the aesthetic dimension of everyday objects and materials. Technology is often seen to be in competition with heritage and tradition – frequently threatening it to the point of elimination for a new, smarter world. Symphony of the Everyday – Sunset Sonata, however, suggests that technology can be employed to spark a conversation on the meaning of heritage in everyday life. Grounded in cybernetic conversation theory, the installation uses interactive technology to serve aesthetic experience. Symphony of the Everyday – Sunset Sonata reveals the role of architecture as a means of constructing an enriched life and renders the objects and materials that make up a village household’s everyday tangible in their aesthetic dimension. Activated by the movement of the visitors, playing in the presence of the setting sun, the kinetic objects and their sounds engage in a new conversation on the possibilities of technology to nurture a community’s heritage and values.The presentation introduces the installation Symphony of the Everyday – Sunset Sonata and contextualises it, linking Gordon Pask’s concept of conversation to Roger T. Ames’ zoetology, a term used to differentiate traditional Chinese philosophy from the ontological thinking dominant in the Western world
Effect of substrate mineralogy, biofilm and extracellular polymeric substances on bacterially induced carbonate mineralisation investigated with in situ nanoscale ToF-SIMS
Bacterial mineralisation of calcium carbonates (CaCO3) has become a focal point of interest in the scientific community owing to their versatile applications as biomaterials. However, despite extensive research, the knowledge on factors influencing biogenic CaCO3 polymorph (calcite, vaterite or aragonite) selection in nature remains obscure. Bacterial mineralisation happens in nature on diverse substrates by different pathways, often in the presence of organic matter such as biofilm and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secreted with the regular metabolic activities of microbes. This study examines the bacterial CaCO3 mineralisation process by two distinct pathways on different natural substrates with advanced analytical techniques, including Time of Flight- Secondary Ions Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). A high EPS-producing microbe (Bacillus subtilis, BS) was compared with the standard ureolytic strain (Sporosarcina pasteurii, SP). Natural geological minerals, including apatite, calcite and quartz, were selected as substrates. This study demonstrates that SP favours the precipitation of rhombohedral calcite crystals (2 to 40 μm in size), regardless of the mineral substrate. In contrast, the EPS-producing BS culture induced the formation of significantly larger vaterite structures (20 to 100 μm in size) in spheroid and hexagonal shapes. The mineralogy of precipitates was confirmed with Raman spectroscopy. ToF-SIMS enabled the spatial tracking of organic macromolecules and the adsorption of calcium ions on them. The functional groups of the EPS involved in these interactions were characterised by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). This study reveals that microbial activity dominates over substrate mineralogy in selecting the phase and shaping the morphology of biogenic CaCO3, with EPS playing a crucial role in promoting the aggregation of small nanocrystals into large vaterite structures and their stabilisation

As a fundamental resource for all life forms, water plays a multifaceted role in our ecosystems, as a critical input to various sectors in our economies and to human well-being. Human activities, including industrial activity, continue to apply significant pressure on the environment, making water resources more vulnerable to pollution and degradation.
This brief explores the role of trade in facilitating access to affordable industrial wastewater treatment (WWT) solutions in developing countries. It does so through a combination of global data analysis and SMEP case study reviews outlining its potential for sustainability transitions and the business case for private-sector investment
