The White Hills Gravel of central Victoria: an anomalous Paleogene very coarse-grained fluvial deposit
The White Hills Gravel is the coarsest fluvial gravel within Victoria, southeastern Australia, and outcrops discontinuously across a substantial part (>35 000 km2) of this region. It overlies a major regional unconformity representing >300 Ma, and is dominated by conglomerate (61% of beds), with less abundant sandy lithofacies (36% of beds) and rare mudstones (3% of beds). The sedimentary characteristics of the basal conglomerates (e.g. thick bedding, common boulders, very poor sorting and in places chaotic appearance) indicate deposition by significant paleofloods, including debris floods, within braided streams that had similar flow directions to the modern drainage. Paleohydraulic calculations estimate that the paleofloods had discharges exceeding >7200 m3 s−1, over 25 times the largest recorded floods in the same valleys. These paleofloods were probably caused by exceptionally severe storm systems, consisting of many individual thunderstorms. Deposition of the White Hills Gravel has previously been attributed to the mid-Cretaceous uplift that affected southeastern Australia, but the maximum possible age of the formation (early Paleocene) is too young for this to be a viable explanation. Instead, the White Hills Gravel may have been deposited during a period of increased precipitation at the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (ca 56 Ma), when an intensification of the hydrological system generated significant sediment responses within fluvial systems around the world. Modelling indicates that this climatic event had a substantial impact in Victoria, where increases in mean annual precipitation (50–60%) and the most extreme rainfall rates achieved by the strongest storms (60–70%) were some of the largest globally, and frequent and intense Atmospheric Rivers were an important part of the hydrological system. These factors, together with a period of disturbed vegetation cover, resulted in major paleofloods that could have deposited the coarse-grained conglomerates of the White Hills Gravel.</p
Effect of a single-session mindfulness-based intervention for reducing stress in family caregivers of people with dementia: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial
Abstract:- Background: Caregiver stress can pose serious health and psychological concerns, highlighting the importance of timely interventions for family caregivers of people with dementia. Single-session mindfulness-based interventions could be a promising yet under-researched approach to enhancing their mental well-being within their unpredictable, time-constrained contexts. This trial will evaluate the efectiveness and feasibility of a blended mindfulness-based intervention consisting of a single session and app-based follow-up in reducing caregiver stress. Methods/Design: The study is a single-blinded randomized controlled trial with two arms (intervention versus an education session on dementia care) and assessments at baseline, 8 weeks, and 6 months. The eligibility criteria include: family caregivers aged 18 years or older; providing care for an individual with a confrmed medical diagnosis of dementia for at least 3 months prior to recruitment, with a minimum of 4 hours of daily contact; and exhibiting a high level of caregiver stress. The intervention comprises a 90-minute group-based session with various mindfulness practices and psychoeducation. Participants will receive a self-practice toolkit to guide their practice over a duration of 8 weeks. Sharing activities will be implemented through an online social media platform. The primary outcome is perceived caregiving stress. The secondary outcomes include depressive symptoms, positive aspects of caregiving, dyadic relationship, trait mindfulness, and neuropsychiatric symptoms of care recipients. The feasibility outcomes include eligibility and enrollment, attendance, adherence to self-practice, and retention, assessed using mixed methods. Discussion: The study will contribute to the evidence base by investigating whether a single-session mindfulness intervention is efective and feasible for reducing caregiver stress among family caregivers of people with dementia.

AI Applications in Adult Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation: A Scoping Review Using AI
Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide. With the advancements in sensor technologies and data availability, artificial intelligence (AI) holds the promise of improving the amount, quality and efficiency of care and enhancing the precision of stroke rehabilitation. We aimed to identify and characterize the existing research on AI applications in stroke recovery and rehabilitation of adults, including categories of application and progression of technologies over time. Data were collected from peer-reviewed articles across various electronic databases up to January 2024. Insights were extracted using AI-enhanced multi-method, data-driven techniques, including clustering of themes and topics. This scoping review summarizes outcomes from 704 studies. Four common themes (impairment, assisted intervention, prediction and imaging, and neuroscience) were identified, in which time-linked patterns emerged. The impairment theme revealed a focus on motor function, gait and mobility, while the assisted intervention theme included applications of robotic and brain–computer interface (BCI) techniques. AI applications progressed over time, starting from conceptualization and then expanding to a broader range of techniques in supervised learning, artificial neural networks (ANN), natural language processing (NLP) and more. Applications focused on upper limb rehabilitation were reviewed in more detail, with machine learning (ML), deep learning techniques and sensors such as inertial measurement units (IMU) used for upper limb and functional movement analysis. AI applications have potential to facilitate tailored therapeutic delivery, thereby contributing to the optimization of rehabilitation outcomes and promoting sustained recovery from rehabilitation to real-world settings.</p
‘I am a textural composer’: Jane Stanley on the creative process, immersive textures, glow and a new song cycle
This is the transcript of an interview with Glasgow-based Australian composer Dr Jane Stanley. The interviewer is Dr Judith Bishop, an Australian poet and lyricist whose words appear in two of the works discussed: ‘14 Weeks’ (from Interval (UQP, 2018) and ‘The Indifferent’ (from Event (Salt Publishing UK, 2007)). The interview was recorded at the University of Glasgow on 29 May 2023 and edited for clarity, length and concision. It was recorded a day after the world premiere of Jane Stanley's 14 Weeks at the Glasgow School of Art Choir Composeher concert in City Halls, Glasgow. In response to a recent survey which revealed huge gender inequalities in the granting of music commissions, Composeher had commissioned seven female composers to write choral works of around ten minutes, of which 14 Weeks was one. The interview ranges widely, from the composer's textural style to her creative process, and touches on her forthcoming composer portrait album, to be released by Delphian Records in 2024.</p
Discovery of a conserved translationally repressive upstream open reading frame within the iron-deficiency response regulator IDEF2
Background: Iron (Fe) deficiency affects 30–50% of the world’s population. Genetic biofortification of staple crops is a promising strategy for improving human nutrition, but the number of effective precision breeding targets for Fe biofortification is small. Upstream open reading frames (uORFs) are cis-regulatory elements within the 5’ leader sequence (LS) of genes that generally repress translation of the main open reading frame (mORF). Results: We aligned publicly available rice (Oryza sativa L.) ribo-seq datasets and transcriptomes to identify putative uORFs within important Fe homeostasis genes. A dual luciferase assay (DLA) was used to determine whether these uORFs cause repression of mORF translation and pinpoint LS regions that can be mutated for mORF derepression. A translationally repressive uORF region was identified in two positive regulators of the Fe-deficiency response: IDEF1 and IDEF2. The IDEF2-uORF peptide was highly conserved among monocots and a mutation series in the 5’ LS of the wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) TaIDEF2-A1 gene demonstrated variable mORF derepression. Conclusions: Together these results reveal a possible regulatory mechanism by which IDEF2 transcription factors modulate the Fe deficiency response in monocots, and highlight novel precision breeding targets to improve crop nutrition and abiotic stress tolerance.</p
Access and Injustice: An Intersectionality-informed Analysis of Victorian Mental Health Policy in Australia
The use of compulsion and restrictive interventions in mental health care has been linked to social factors including poverty and marginalization. Using an intersectionality-informed analysis of key Victorian mental health policy documents released over the past decade, we identified a consistent lack of attention to the role played by race, socioeconomic status, and other forms of marginalization in the increased likelihood of compulsory treatment. Although policymakers have strived to consider the role of social determinants in catalyzing or mitigating mental distress, this social framework is often displaced by a consistently dominant biomedical approach to mental illness, which emphasizes identifying diagnoses and providing clinical treatment. This paper critically examines the stated intentions of mental health policy in Victoria, Australia, and the recent recommendations of the Royal Commission into Victoria's mental health system. We found that policies and recommendations for reform tend to express an intention to decrease the use of compulsion and restrictive interventions. However, the assumption expressed in reforms is that compulsory treatment is the result of systematic failure to provide treatment through other less intrusive avenues, thus neglecting deliberate discussion and action on the intersecting social factors that directly contribute to compulsory treatment
