Micropeltation in Myrtaceae: a neglected subject
The majority of taxa with peltate leaves are perennial herbs native to swampy or aquatic habitats or to mesic shaded understorey habitats. These large peltate leaves are formed by a meristematic bridge at the lamina–petiole junction. However, there are also several strong-light exposed, small-leaved, xero- and scleromorphic Myrtaceae with leaf peltation which is formed without a meristem fusion/bridge. Here, abaxial laminar tissue at the insertion point of the petiole forms a basal extension, so that a weak peltation occurs. This shifts the petiole onto the adaxial laminar surface. The formation of micropeltation in Myrtaceae leads to erect leaves that are strongly appressed to the shoot axis and the entire foliate, vertical shoots appear as “green columns”, a result that is also the case in taxa with reflexed minute leaves. It seems that micropeltation achieves the same goal as leaf reflexion in small-leaved taxa—reduction of heat-load and transpiration during the hottest phases of the day by a lower light interception at midday compared to the morning and evening. Thus, physiologically micropeltation and reflexion of minute leaves seem to be the result of convergent evolution.</p
Our cheating is not your cheating: signature misconduct exemplified in mathematics
That the manifestation of cheating varies between disciplines is rarely discussed, an unspoken assumption being that assessment takes the form of written prose supported by a bibliography. Students and academics from disciplines, such as mathematics, not fitting this model can feel that their work is regarded as an aberration. ‘Plagiarism’ is not an adequate term to indicate collusion on an individual task, copying a classmate’s calculation by hand, or substitution of a computational tool for one’s own competence when it is being tested. Signature pedagogies give rise to signature assessments and hence signature misconduct. Our analysis provides insight into the nature and rationale of mathematics assessment for the broader academic integrity community, and we suggest that other disciplines, particularly the non-text disciplines, may wish to similarly examine their own forms of misconduct. Our cheating is not your cheating; therein lies a challenge for all of us.</p
Development and content validation of the Upper Limb-Motor Learning Strategy Tool for cerebral palsy
Purpose: To describe the development and content validation of the Upper Limb-Motor Learning Strategy Tool (UL-MLST) that aims to guide clinicians on how to implement and document the motor learning strategies used in the upper limb therapy approaches for children with cerebral palsy. Methods: The study consists of two main stages (1) item generation and development and (2) content validation and refinement. The UL-MLST Online Training Program, Manual and Checklist were developed by the authorship group in stage one. In stage 2, two experts evaluated the UL-MLST regarding the Relevance, Coherence, and Significance of the individual strategies and whether the tool is Relevant, Comprehensive, and Clinically useful. Results: Of sixty-two strategies included in the UL-MLST, 52 strategies were rated as being either “Moderately” or “Highly” Relevant, Coherent, and Significant. Ten strategies did not achieve mutual agreement; however, they did not meet the criteria for deletion and were revised according to expert feedback. Overall, the UL-MST was judged to be Relevant, Comprehensive, and Clinically useful. Conclusions: The UL-MLST provides a valid tool to support clinicians in the implementation of the motor learning strategies for children with cerebral palsy.</p
Telehealth for HIV care and management among people living with HIV in Australia: results from an online survey
Background: The aims of this study were to evaluate the experiences of telehealth for routine HIV care and identify preferred models of HIV routine care for the future. Methods: Anonymous, online questionnaire among people living with HIV aged 18years or older. This survey was advertised via posters with a QR code in six sexual health clinics and one community organisation as well as on social media from November 2021 to December 2022. Results: Of 89 participants, the majority were males (80/89, 89.9%), between 36 and 55years old (49/89, 55.1%), spoke English at home (74/89, 84.1%), had been living with HIV for >5years (68/89, 76.4%) and reported having a telehealth consultation since the COVID-19 pandemic began (69/89, 77.5%). The top three liked aspects of telehealth were: the convenience of not leaving home or work (50/69, 72.5%); less travel time (48/69, 69.6%); and avoiding contact with other people (30/69, 43.5%). The top three dislikes of telehealth were: they could not be screened for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or have a physical examination at the same time (29/69, 42.0%); it was an impersonal experience (20/69, 29.0%); and it was more difficult to discuss health concerns (18/69, 26.1%). Among all participants, the preference for future consultations was to have a mix between in-person and telehealth (40/89, 44.9%); however, nearly one-quarter prefer in-person consultations only (20/89, 22.5%). Conclusions: Use of telehealth during COVID-19 has been evaluated positively among people living with HIV that participated in this survey. Participants support the use of telehealth for routine care in conjunction with in-person consultations.</p
Magnetic resonance imaging-guided single-fraction preoperative radiotherapy for early-stage breast cancer (the RICE trial): feasibility study
BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, the adoption of screening programs, digital mammography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has increased early-stage breast cancer diagnosis rates. Mortality rates have decreased due to early detection and improved treatments, including personalized therapies. Accelerated partial-breast irradiation (APBI) is emerging as a convenient and effective treatment for some patients, with studies exploring its preoperative use. Preoperative APBI, especially with MRI guidance, offers improved tumor targeting and potentially reduced side effects. Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Guided Single-Fraction Pre-Operative Radiotherapy for Early-Stage Breast Cancer (RICE trial) aims to assess the feasibility and efficacy of MRI-guided single-dose radiotherapy (RT) for early-stage breast cancer. METHODS: The RICE study is a prospective, single-arm study evaluating single-fraction preoperative, APBI treatment for patients with early-stage breast cancer using a magnetic resonance imaging linear accelerator (MRI linac). Eligible patients enrolled in this study will have a core biopsy to confirm estrogen receptor-positive and HER2-negative sub-type. RT planning will use a planning computed tomography (CT) co-registered with a MRI with the patient in either the supine or prone position. For the diagnostic workup, [18F] fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT ([18F] FDG PET/CT) and [18F] fluoroestradiol positron emission tomography/CT ([18F] FES PET/CT) will be performed prior to treatment. Thirty patients will receive a single ablative RT dose of 21 Gray to the tumor. Pre-treatment and post-treatment MRI scans will be acquired at baseline and 5 weeks post-RT respectively. Breast-conserving surgery will be scheduled for 6 weeks after APBI treatment using the MRI linac. The primary study endpoint is the successful administration of a single fraction of preoperative breast RT under the guidance of an MRI linac. Secondary endpoints include evaluating the utility of MRI, [18F] FDG PET/CT, and [18F] FES PET/CT as a non-invasive method for assessing treatment response in patients undergoing single-fraction preoperative APBI. CONCLUSION: The RICE trial represents a significant step in breast cancer treatment, offering insights that could lead to treatment protocols with minimized RT appointments and enhanced patient outcomes. GABA does not regulate stomatal CO<sub>2</sub> signalling in Arabidopsis
Optimal stomatal regulation is important for plant adaptation to changing environmental conditions and for maintaining crop yield. The guard cell signal γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is produced from glutamate by glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) during a reaction that generates CO2 as a by-product. Here, we investigated a putative connection between GABA signalling and the more clearly defined CO2 signalling pathway in guard cells. The GABA-deficient mutant Arabidopsis lines gad2-1, gad2-2, and gad1/2/4/5 were examined for stomatal sensitivity to various CO2 concentrations. Our findings show a phenotypical discrepancy between the allelic mutant lines gad2-1 and gad2-2-a weakened CO2 response in gad2-1 (GABI_474_E05) in contrast to a wild-type response in gad2-2 (SALK_028819) and gad1/2/4/5. Through transcriptomic and genomic investigation, we traced the response of gad2-1 to a deletion of full-length Mitogen-activated protein kinase 12 (MPK12) in the GABI-KAT line, thereafter renamed as gad2-1*. Guard cell-specific complementation of MPK12 in gad2-1* restored the wild-type CO2 phenotype, which confirms the proposed importance of MPK12 in CO2 sensitivity. Additionally, we found that stomatal opening under low atmospheric CO2 occurs independently of the GABA-modulated opening channel ALUMINIUM-ACTIVATED MALATE TRANSPORTER 9 (ALMT9). Our results demonstrate that GABA has a role in modulating the rate of stomatal opening and closing, but not in response to CO2per se.</p
Helicobacter pylori upregulates PAD4 expression via stabilising HIF-1α to exacerbate rheumatoid arthritis
Objective: Helicobacter pylori infection has been reported to aggravate rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but the relevant mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the underlying pathogenic mechanism of H. pylori infection in the progression of RA. Methods: The Disease Activity Score (DAS-28) and serum anticitrullinated protein antibody (ACPA) levels were compared between H. pylori-negative and H. pylori-positive patients with RA. MH7A cells were stimulated with polyclonal ACPA purified from the peripheral blood of patients with RA. The citrullination levels were assessed by western blot in GES-1 cells and sera. ChIP, luciferase reporter assays, mass spectrometry and ELISA were applied to explore the molecular mechanism of H. pylori infection in RA progression. Results: The DAS-28 and ACPA levels of patients with RA in the H. pylori-positive group were significantly higher than those in the H. pylori-negative group. Polyclonal ACPA derived from H. pylori-positive patients promoted cell proliferation and induced secretion of IL-6 and IL-8. For the first time, we found that H. pylori infection induces cellular protein citrullination by upregulating protein arginine deiminase type 4 (PAD4). Furthermore, we confirmed a direct functional binding of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α on the PADI4 gene promoter. We demonstrated that PAD4 interacts with and citrullinates keratin 1 (K1), and serum and synovial fluid levels of anti-Cit-K1 antibody were markedly increased in H. pylori-infected patients with RA. Conclusion: Our findings reveal a novel mechanism by which H. pylori infection contributes to RA progression. Therapeutic interventions targeting H. pylori may be a viable strategy for the management of RA.</p

Automation tools to support undertaking scoping reviews
OBJECTIVE: This paper describes several automation tools and software that can be considered during evidence synthesis projects and provides guidance for their integration in the conduct of scoping reviews. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: The guidance presented in this work is adapted from the results of a scoping review and consultations with the JBI Scoping Review Methodology group. RESULTS: This paper describes several reliable, validated automation tools and software that can be used to enhance the conduct of scoping reviews. Developments in the automation of systematic reviews, and more recently scoping reviews, are continuously evolving. We detail several helpful tools in order of the key steps recommended by the JBI's methodological guidance for undertaking scoping reviews including team establishment, protocol development, searching, de-duplication, screening titles and abstracts, data extraction, data charting, and report writing. While we include several reliable tools and software that can be used for the automation of scoping reviews, there are some limitations to the tools mentioned. For example, some are available in English only and their lack of integration with other tools results in limited interoperability. CONCLUSION: This paper highlighted several useful automation tools and software programs to use in undertaking each step of a scoping review. This guidance has the potential to inform collaborative efforts aiming at the development of evidence informed, integrated automation tools and software packages for enhancing the conduct of high-quality scoping reviews.</p
Hypervector Approximation of Complex Manifolds for Artificial Intelligence Digital Twins in Smart Cities
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Smart cities have been studied extensively as an overarching framework to address the needs of increasing urbanisation and the targets of SDG 11. Digital twins and artificial intelligence are foundational technologies that enable the rapid prototyping, development and deployment of systems and solutions within this overarching framework of smart cities. In this paper, we present a novel AI approach for hypervector approximation of complex manifolds in high-dimensional datasets and data streams such as those encountered in smart city settings. This approach is based on hypervectors, few-shot learning and a learning rule based on single-vector operation that collectively maintain low computational complexity. Starting with high-level clusters generated by the K-means algorithm, the approach interrogates these clusters with the Hyperseed algorithm that approximates the complex manifold into fine-grained local variations that can be tracked for anomalies and temporal changes. The approach is empirically evaluated in the smart city setting of a multi-campus tertiary education institution where diverse sensors, buildings and people movement data streams are collected, analysed and processed for insights and decisions.</p
