Anchored in Sole Ingredient Concentration: Numerical Values and Consumer Perceptions of Healthfulness and Quality
Numerical values often serve as anchors in consumer evaluations, potentially shaping perceptions even in the absence of objective reference points. This research introduces the Concentrated Effect, which posits that numerical values indicating the amount of a sole ingredient in a food product can enhance perceptions of ingredient concentration. Across a series of studies, we investigate the implications of this effect on healthfulness and product quality evaluations. Study 1 demonstrates that the presence of a numerical value, irrespective of its numerosity (e.g., less numerous as in pounds vs. more numerous as in ounces), increases healthfulness perceptions compared to when no numerical value is provided, supporting the Concentrated Effect. Study 2 reveals that healthfulness perceptions mediate the effect of numerical values on product quality, but this effect is minimized when a Health Star Rating serves as an external anchor, highlighting the role of competing cues. Study 3 examines an unhealthy product (corn syrup) as a boundary condition, finding that while numerical values anchor perceptions of ingredient concentration, their influence on healthfulness and product quality is nullified due to negative health associations. Together, these findings advance our understanding of how numerical values function as anchors in non‐comparative contexts, shedding light on their limitations and practical implications for marketing and policy.</p
Long-distance migrations of catfishes in two large tropical rivers: The Ayeyarwady and Mekong rivers
Understanding fish migration ecology is crucial for fisheries management. In this study, trace element and strontium isotope ratios were analysed in otoliths (ear-stones) of four economically important catfish species (Pangasiidae): Pangasius krempfi and P. mekongensis in the Mekong River, and P. pangasius and Pangasius sp. in the Ayeyarwady River to understand their migratory behaviour. Our findings showed that all four catfish species exhibited long-distance migrations: specifically, growth occurred in marine and brackish environments but migrations to fresh water were undertaken for spawning (anadromy). We identified cyclical variation in otolith elemental concentrations, suggesting these catfishes either migrated repeatedly between brackish and marine environments, or remained in estuarine areas where water chemistry varied seasonally. Additionally, evidence of multiple migration strategies was found among these catfishes. Regardless of species or river system there was consistent evidence supporting long-distance migrations that extended up to 3000 km on a return trip between feeding (marine) and spawning grounds (freshwater). To maintain viable populations of these long-distance migratory catfishes, ensuring river-to-sea connectivity is essential for the completion of their life cycles. Local and regional management plans should be developed to regulate anthropogenic pressures (e.g. dams and fishing) along their migration routes and current or planned water infrastructure should address the requirement for unimpeded bi-directional movement.</p

The potential for routinely weighing/measuring blood loss following vaginal birth to improve ascertainment: a retrospective study at two Victorian hospitals
Background: Determination of the volume of primary postpartum blood loss (i.e., within the first 24 hours following birth) is commonly estimated visually. This simple method is subject to intra‐ and inter‐operator error and variation, with the main concern being underestimation of blood loss. Safer Care Victoria (Australia) introduced a good practice point in 2019 of weighing/measuring blood and items following birth. Methods: A retrospective analysis of routinely collected maternity data at two co‐governed Victorian maternity services (Hospitals A/B) compared documented blood loss when predominantly estimated visually (2016‐18) with weighing/measuring (2020‐22). Results: Increased rates of reported blood loss ≥500mL following vaginal birth were noted across the two epochs, particularly for 500 to Comment: Further research may consider staff factors, such as exposure to promotion of the practice of measuring blood loss; recency of their appointment to birth suite; availability of resources for measuring blood loss; birth suite culture; and relevant hospital policies.</p

The study compared blood pressure, pulse rate, and self-report measures of stress and wellbeing in staff and students who came to our laboratory on two visits. During one visit, they had a 20 minute interaction with a puppy and the puppy's handler, and on another visit they interacted with the handler alone. Data were collected twice on each visit, before and after the interaction. </p

Trends in the complexity of self-harm hospitalisations over 11 years at a major regional hospital in Victoria, Australia: a retrospective study
Background: This population-based study explored the Australian Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (AR-DRG) complexity of self-harm admissions over time at a major regional hospital in Victoria, Australia. It also assessed the prehospital paramedic management of such admitted patients. Methods: Self-harm admissions at the hospital from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2020, were included, excluding accidental injuries and children under 10. Hospital records were linked with Ambulance Victoria electronic patient care records. Trends in the age- and social status-adjusted AR-DRG complexity of self-harm hospitalisations by sex were analysed using Dickey-Fuller and MacKinnon tests. Odds of presenting with a major complexity were modelled using the Generalised Estimating Equations approach. Findings: Overall, 2,000 individuals (58.6% female, mean age at last admission 36.9 ± 18.6 years), contributing to 2,808 admissions, were included in the study.
