Social Epistemology and Knowing-How
This chapter reviews some key developments in discussions of the social dimensions of knowing-how. Drawing on ideas in Craig (1990) and Hawley (2011), it argues that we can better understand these issues by thinking of knowing-how as a kind of ‘downstream’ knowledge defined in terms of its role in guiding our actions and achievements. This is as opposed to knowing-that, which is normally analysed in terms of ‘upstream’ conditions concerned with the origins of a true belief state, conditions which are meant to reveal why knowledge itself is a kind of achievement. The chapter shows how this downstream-versus-upstream distinction can help to illuminate various putative differences between knowing-how and knowing-that with respect to testimony, demonstrating one’s knowledge to other people, and epistemic injustice. The value of a ‘wrap-around’ approach to blended learning: a quantitative study of student attainment and engagement with pre-class and post-class interactive online learning resources
Blended learning strategies that employ online resources and face-to-face classes are widely utilised within higher education. Although research suggests that online learning resources can enhance engagement and improve student outcomes, debate continues regarding how best to design the online component of a blended learning strategy. This study contributes to such debate by investigating the impact on student learning of a ‘flipped classroom’ design that configures pre-class interactive videos and post-class online quizzes around collaborative workshops within a first-year physics subject. Quantitative data relating to student engagement with these resources, as well as student results, was extracted from the host institution’s learning management system. The study reports on the analysis of such data from 490 students who completed the unit between 2018 and 2023, with some participants engaging extensively with both online resources, some using one but not the other, and around a third of the sample using neither extensively. Findings show that while student engagement with either pre-class interactive videos or post-class quizzes was associated with improved student attainment relative to those who used neither, there was no significant difference in results between those who extensively used one of these resource types but not the other. The highest results were achieved by students who engaged extensively with both types of resource, highlighting the value of employing both pre-class and post-class interactive online learning tools in delivery of a ’wrap-around’ blended learning strategy.</p
Do bar supports affect the accuracy of mandibular complete denture bases produced with additive manufacturing at different printing orientations? An in vitro evaluation
Purpose: This in vitro study aimed to determine if the addition of bar supports influences the trueness or precision of additively manufactured mandibular complete denture bases. Methods: 100 denture bases were additively manufactured via digital light processing from a photopolymer acrylate at 0, 15, 45, 60, and 90° printing orientation. For each printing orientation cylindrical bar supports, with a diameter of 4 mm, were added on the denture base lingual to the second molars and perpendicular to the lingual midline then left off to investigate if this influenced the outcomes. The analysis was conducted on the intaglio surface of the denture base with a metrology software and the outcome being root mean square. The analysis was separated into three separate regions (anterior, middle, and posterior) to aid discussion and clinical interpretation. The results were analysed for descriptive statistics and differences analysed with a series of one-way ANOVA tests for the regions and Tukey test for multiple comparisons to a statistical significance of P Results: The 15° printing orientation demonstrated the highest degree of accuracy (Mean RMS:6.76, SD 0.54) while 45° performed the worst (Mean RMS:10, SD: 0.45). A regression analysis determined that the support struts had a significant (P Conclusion: The accuracy of mandibular complete denture bases, that are additively manufactured, can be improved by incorporating lower printing angulation and bar supports. Clinical significance: Lack of trueness and precision of the intaglio surface of a complete mandibular denture base may affect the stability and increase the need for post insert adjustment appointments. Care should be given when considering the printing orientation and the addition of bar supports for a complete mandibular denture base to minimise these clinical complications.</p
Dynamic Proteome Landscape During Preimplantation Human Embryo Development and Trophectoderm Stem Cell-Differentiation
Embryo development involves fertilization of a mature ovum, which, after sequential cell divisions (2-,4-8-cells and morula), undergoes differentiation into implantation competent blastocyst. The blastocyst comprises of inner cell mass surrounded by an outer layer of cells called the trophoblast (TSblast) that, upon attachment to the endometrium, differentiates into extravillous trophoblasts (EVTs) that facilitates embryo invasion into the endometrium for intrauterine embryo development, and syncytiotrophoblast (ST) that form the placenta. Such cellular differentiation stages are critical for embryogenesis and implantation, although the protein expression landscape remains poorly understood in humans. Using quantitative mass spectrometry analysis, we systematically monitored the protein expression landscape and their dynamic regulation between human ovum (M2), 8-cell embryo, and blastocysts stages, and trophoblast lineage-specific differentiation into EVTs and ST. Proteins temporally regulated from M2-8 cell-blastocyst stage displayed significant enrichment for metabolic protein networks. We specifically identified 156 proteins associated with 8-cell embryos to blastocyst development, 54 displayed similar correlation at the transcriptomic level including mitochondrial, junction/secretory granule-associated proteins that carry glycolytic, antioxidant, and telomerase maintenance functions. We reveal a striking lineage-specific reprogramming of TSblast proteome during fate-specification. These findings extend our knowledge of the sequential order of protein landscape reprogramming and processes during early human embryogenesis and trophoblast function. Summary: Although genomic and transcriptomic studies have provided key understanding of the genetic programs underlying preimplantation embryo development, the protein expression landscape remains unexplored. Here, a quantitative proteomic study of human preimplantation embryo stages reveal a dynamic proteome landscape from M2, 8-cell, and blastocyst stage, and during trophoblast stem cell (TS) differentiation. Identified key factors in early human embryos and lineage-specific trophoblast proteome profiles, further correlated with transcriptomic analyses. This direct proteomic analysis provides a quantitative and temporal analysis of the dynamic protein expression in human embryos during preimplantation development and a powerful resource to enable further mechanistic studies on human trophoblast development and function.</p
Perception of Conventional Cigarettes and Vaping among Smokers and Nonsmokers: A Cross-sectional Study
Objectives: The growing popularity of vaping has introduced additional challenges, as potential health risks are still under investigation. Exploring differences in smoking perceptions between smokers and non-smokers could provide valuable insights into smoking behavior and inform effective intervention strategies. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the perceptions of smoking, specifically vaping and conventional cigarette use, among young adult smokers and non-smokers. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional design was employed, with 542 university students included through random sampling, using a questionnaire consisting of 8 items. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Rasch model analysis. Results: Of the subjects, 259 (48%) used vapes and 283 (52%) were non-smokers. The age distribution was as follows: under 19 years (13.51% vs 38.87%), 19-20 years (46.33% vs 32.16%), and over 21 years (40.15% vs 28.98%). The Wright map indicated perceptual differences between smokers and non-smokers, with smokers showing greater agreement with smoking perceptions (>1 logit). Significant differences (p < 0.001) were found in each item across all groups. Conclusion: The study identified distinct perceptual differences regarding smoking between smokers and non-smokers, with smokers having a more favorable perception towards smoking. Non-smokers generally showed a stronger aversion to conventional cigarettes compared to electronic ones. These findings underscore the importance of developing targeted smoking cessation programs that address the specific perceptions and attitudes of both groups.</p

This data will inform future changes and improvements to the resource.
