    Using Data in the Classroom

    In recent years data has come to define more of what we do and, arguably, who we are. Jobs that were previously built on intuition now include the analysis of large datasets, with knowledge workers looking for patterns in data that can then be used to justify their actions. Our interactions with each other increasingly take place on digital platforms, mediated by data driven suggestions and interaction metrics, such as someone ‘liking’ the picture of your cat. Some have gone so far as to argue that we are entering a new human epoch, one defined by data and interactions between information processing agents, both human and machine (Floridi, 2014).Schools have not escaped these changes, and whilst they have always used data, for example in the forms of registers and test results, data usage has taken on increased importance. Education is now driven by large scale quantitative research-informed practice and exam league tables. Student-teacher interactions are recorded in digital progress reports, student engagement in online lessons and homework is saved into databases for analysis by senior managers and tech companies, and the emergence of artificial intelligence asks for ever finer levels of student and teacher data which ed-tech firms can turn into educational interventions and potentially profit.This chapter explores the different uses (and misuses) of data in the school system. It will give you an overview of how to use information to inform your practice as well as providing you with the tools to question the use of data by others. Underlying the arguments presented in this chapter is the idea that the effective use of data can lead to school improvement through helpful performance management and school accountability measures, correct identification of studentachievements leading to productive target setting, and the better deployment of staff and resources (Kirkup et al., 2005

    The Rights of Nature as a Legal Response to the Global Environmental Crisis?:A critical review of international law’s ‘greening’ agenda

    Over the past decade and a half, various natural entities have been recognised as having rights or legal personhood in certain domestic jurisdictions. The idea of nature as rights-bearing is seen by advocates to be a new and improved response to environmental threats. While rights of nature approaches are increasingly evident in transnational law, orthodox international law has yet to engage seriously with such approaches, despite increasing calls to recognise the rights of nature in international law. In this article we consider the potential and limitations of rights-based protections of nature as part of the ‘greening’ of international law. We argue that attempts to incorporate the rights of nature into international law need to be understood within the wider context and history of international law, including trajectories of colonialism and economic resource exploitation. Although rights of nature approaches may offer a path towards a greener international law, this path should not be followed in a way that reproduces problematic, homogenising aspects of international law, but instead centres human relationality with nature in place. Instead, we argue that there are important lessons to be learnt from transnational attempts to protect and implement rights of nature and legal personhood, especially where models are informed by Indigenous peoples’ relationships with natur

    The Distribution of Calretinin Immunoreactive Neurons in Ageing Human Colon is Region and Sublayer Specific

    Background: Among the elderly ageing is not associated with an overall loss of myenteric neurons in the colon yet the incidence of gastrointestinal disorders such as constipation increases. We investigated the influence of old age on the pattern of distribution of a specific group of neurons, namely calretinin-immunoreactive (IR) enteric neurons in the myenteric (MP) and submucous (SMP) plexus of human ascending (AC) and descending (DC) colon and further examined their fibre density in the mucosa.Methods: Macroscopically normal AC and DC colon were obtained from patients aged 22 – 91 years undergoing lower bowel cancer resection. These were immunolabelled with calretinin antibody to identify calretinin-IR enteric neurons and fibres.Results: In adults, the number of calretinin-immunoreactive cell bodies per ganglion was greater in the SMP than MP but with similar density in the AC and DC. In both age groups, the densities of calretinin-IR enteric neurons were similar in the MP of the AC (adult: 1.2 ± 0.3 x 10-3 ; elderly: 0.9 ± 0.2 x 10-3 per mm2 of plexus) and DC (respectively 1.4 ± 0.2 x 10-3; 1.3 ± 0.3 x 10-3 per mm2 of plexus). Among the elderly, the density of calretinin-IR neurons and fibres were decreased in the SMP of AC but not clearly in the DC. In the mucosal layer of both AC and DC, the decrease in density of fibres was greater in the AC compared to DC.Conclusion: The ageing of the human colon does not result in the loss of calretinin-immunoreactive neurons and fibres in the MP but losses occur in the submucosa of AC and within the mucosa of both AC and DC

    Assessment of Eurocode 3 Shear Design Provisions for Cold-Formed Steel Beams with Web Holes

    Cold-formed steel beams are often provided with web holes to accommodate service conduits. These web holes result in reduced structural strength. Accurate estimation of the structural strength, including shear strength, is crucial during the design phase. There are a lot of studies available in the literature investigating the shear strength reduction in cold-formed steel beams due to web holes. However, the ex-periments and parametric finite element results werenot assessed against Eurocode 3 shear design provisions. Therefore, the shear design of cold-formed steel beams with web holes is investigated herein. Existing experimental and parametric finite element analysis data on cold-formed steel beams with circular web holes were collected from the literature. The accuracy of the current Eurocode 3 shear design provisions was then assessed using the collected data. The comparisons showed that the current Eurocode 3 shear design provisions were not suitable to estimate the shear strength of cold-formed steel beams with web holes. Finally, Eurocode 3 shear design provisions are extended to capture the effect of web holes and verified against the available shear tests and finite element results. It was found that the new extended shear design proposal offers improved accuracy and consistency in shear strength predictions
