Causes and prognosis of adults experiencing a first seizure in adulthood: A pilot cohort study conducted in five countries in Latin America

    No full text
There are limited data on first seizure (FS) among adults in low and middle-income countries. We describe findings from a prospective cohort study involving 180 adults presenting with seizures in emergency departments in five Latin American countries. Overall, 102 participants (56.7%) had acute symptomatic seizures (ASyS) while 78 (43.3%) had unprovoked seizures (UPS). Among patients with ASyS, 55 (53.9%) had structural causes, with stroke (n = 24, 23.5%), tumor (n = 10, 9.8%), and trauma (n = 3, 3%) being the most frequent. Nineteen patients (18.6%) had infectious causes, including four (4%) with meningoencephalitis, three (3%) neurocysticercosis, and two (2%) bacterial meningoencephalitis. Twenty patients (19.6%) had metabolic/toxic evidence, including four (4%) with uremic encephalopathy, two (2%) hyponatremia, and three (3%) acute alcohol intoxication. Immune dysfunction was present in seven (7%) patients and neurodegenerative in two (2%). Among participants with UPS, 45 (57.7%) had unknown etiology, 24 (30.7%) had evidence of structural disorders (remote symptomatic), four (5%) were related to infectious etiology (>7 days before the seizure), and five (6.4%) had genetic causes. During the 3- and 6-month follow-up, 29.8% and 14% of patients with UPS, respectively, experienced seizure recurrence, while 23.9% and 24.5% of patients with ASyS had seizure recurrence. Longer follow-up is necessary to assess seizure recurrence for patients with ASyS after the acute cause is resolved and to determine the 10-year risk of recurrence, which is part of the definition of epilepsy. Plain Language Summary: We monitored 180 adults who presented with their first seizure in emergency departments across five Latin American countries. Among these patients, 57% had acute symptomatic seizures, with structural causes such as stroke (23%), infection (17%), or tumor (10%) being more prevalent. Among the 43% with unprovoked seizures, 58% showed no identifiable acute cause, while 6.4% were due to genetics. Within 3 months after their initial seizure, 26.6% of individuals experienced a second seizure, with 11.9% continuing to have seizures in Months 3–6. Between Months 3 and 6, an additional 20% of patients encountered a second seizure. Research is needed to better understand the cause and prognosis of these patients to improve outcomes

Effect of resveratrol supplementation in conventional slow and ultra-rapid freezing media on the quality and fertility of bull sperm

    No full text
The study investigated the impact of resveratrol (RES) on bull sperm cryopreservation employing conventional slow (CS) and ultra-rapid (UR) freezing methods on sperm quality and in vitro fertility. Twenty-four ejaculates from four bulls were divided into four groups based on the cryopreservation method and RES addition: CS-RES (n = 80), CS-Co (n = 80), UR-RES (n = 24), and UR-Co (n = 24). The CS freezing involved exposing sperm straws with 5% glycerol to liquid nitrogen (LN2) vapors, while UR freezing submerged sperm drops with 100 mM sucrose directly into LN2. Overall, sperm kinematic parameters and integrity of plasma and acrosome membranes significantly decreased (P < 0.001) after cryopreservation. Post-thaw values of motilities (total [TM] and progressive [PSM]), velocities (curvilinear and straight-line), beat cross frequency (BCF), and sperm with intact plasma membrane/intact acrosome (PI-/PNA-) were higher (P < 0.05) with CS-RES and CS-Co treatments compared to UR-RES and UR-Co treatments. CS-RES treatment resulted in greater percentages (P < 0.05) of TM, PSM, PI-/PNA-, and fertility (blastocyst rate) than their control, CS-Co; while UR-RES showed higher BCF values (P < 0.05) than its control, UR-Co. Additionally, UR-RES treatment exhibited lower oxidative stress percentages than UR-Co (P < 0.05). This study presents the following conclusions: (1) the CS freezing resulted in better cryosurvival of bull sperm than UR freezing; (2) the RES supplementation to CS freezing medium improved sperm motility, membrane integrity, and fertility; and (3) despite low cryosurvival sperm and fertility, the RES addition to ultra-rapid freezing medium reduced oxidative stress

The moon cycle influences reproductive and productive traits in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) from a tropical Andean area

    No full text
There is currently innumerable evidence showing that the lunar cycle affects various reproductive aspects in farm animals. However, there is very little information on the effect of the lunar cycle on productive traits in these species. A retrospective study was conducted (2015–2018) to evaluate the influence of the lunar cycle on some reproductive and productive traits in a guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) production system in the southern Andean region of Ecuador. A total of 7352 productive and reproductive records of guinea pig females housed in 3 m2 cages with a breeding male were analyzed. The following variables were considered: offspring sex ratio, litter size per cage, number of weaned guinea pigs, mortality, individual and litter weaning weight of guinea pigs, and delivery frequency. The lunar cycle was split into eight periods of ~3.7-d length each. Data were analyzed by logistic regression and general linear model, and means were compared by the least mean squares method of the SAS. The offspring sex ratio was not correlated to the lunar cycle. The lunar cycle at mating and parturition influenced the litter size per cage, number of weaned, and mortality of guinea pigs. The individual and litter-weaning weights were influenced by the lunar cycle at parturition. The frequency of deliveries was greater around the new and full moon than in the remaining periods of the lunar cycle. In conclusion, the lunar cycle influenced several productive and reproductive traits in guinea pigs, such as litter size, mortality, number of pups weaned, and individual and litter weaning weights. This valuable information may have practical applications in management of guinea pig production systems

Visibilización en sistema de la tribu urbana Hip-Hop, para su comprensión sociocultural integrada en una propuesta mural contemporánea

    No full text
The Hip-Hop movement has evolved over the decades in ways that are extremely diverse, encompassing a wide variety of elements such as music, dance, graffiti and fashion. On multiple occasions it has been associated with negative stereotypes that established an erroneous and very limited understanding of what it really implies; since not all people have access to complete information about Hip-Hop. Faced with this problem, it was proposed to capture Hip-Hop Culture in a mural based on its four foundations: breakdance, graffiti, rap and turntablism. In other words, the aim was to disseminate this art through a contemporary visual proposal in order to establish an integrative sociocultural understanding. To this end, a caricature-style mural was created with outdoor painting that consisted of the representation of female and male characters, with representative elements of various urban tribes that converge in Hip-Hop. These elements accentuated the expressiveness of the characters to leave a visual manifesto of what hip-hop is and how it is shaped as an artistic-cultural movement. All this to contribute to the assimilation and positive impact of culture. This aesthetic experience led to the recognition and iconographic identification of selected elements that allude to Hip-Hop, with emphasis on the female artist, in the face of a tradition in which she is frequently omitted; all of this, through beauty, dialogue with the appropriation of community spaces.0000-0002-3423-653

Design of a mass valuation system for urban land based on the land rent theory. Application to the case of Cuenca, Ecuador

    No full text
The municipalities, faced with the obliga-tion to generate property appraisals, have predom-inantly used the comparison method, characterized by submitting to the distortions of the land market, excluding the explicit consideration of factors that value it. This article presents a method of valuing urban land massively, based on the generation of land rents that value the property and that in its capitalized form are expressed in its price. Through the application in the city of Cuenca, a set of pro-cedures is established for the determination of the base unit price, identifying for this the capital incor-porated into the land in infrastructures and equip-ment, and quantifying the most relevant primary and secondary rents from the expressions of the spatial structure of land uses linked to their gener-ation. The results obtained show that the theory of land rent is applicable to the massive valuation of urban land for cadastral purposes, obtaining a sig-nificant degree of understanding of the conforma-tion of land prices in the city associated with their dynamic
