From a local protest to an anti-government mass movement:a discursive analysis of Gezi Park protests
No full textTezin basılısı İstanbul Şehir Üniversitesi Kütüphanesi'ndedir.This study aims to analyze the extent to which the Gezi Park protests achieved to become hegemonic. The protests commenced locally with a group of protesters who opposed to the project of reconstructing an old barrack which had existed in the Gezi Park in the past. However, the protests turned into an anti-government mass movement with an unprecedented heterogeneity thanks to the participation of groups with different demands and identities and they mobilized people for several weeks. This study uses discourse analytical theory of Laclau and Mouffe to analyze the Gezi Park protests as a political struggle. Based on the interviews conducted with the Gezi Park protesters from different identity groups, the study seeks to understand how so many diverse and opposing groups having different demands came together, how they managed to stay together in the park and what they proposed to transform social relations through their struggle. The study investigates the protesters’ reasons for participation, the conflicts among different groups of protesters which undermined their unity, how these conflicts were managed, the protesters’ problems with the government and the demands of the protesters. The study concludes that the Gezi Park protests displayed an antagonistic relation with the government. This, it is argued, made it possible for the protests to bring together a wide range of groups having different demands. However, despite its initial success in mobilizing people having different demands, this study argues, the protests failed to produce a collective identity out of its heterogeneous fabric and this was due to the fact that the act of naming the protests was not achieved. The protests, it is concluded, failed to initiate a hegemonic construction which would aim to change social relations in Turkey.ABSTRACT ................................................................................................................ iv

Playwriting in Armenian diaspora:melancholia and survival
No full textTezin basılısı İstanbul Şehir Üniversitesi Kütüphanesi'ndedir.This thesis study concentrates on the theatrical activity of Armenian North American Diaspora in the 20th century. The Catastrophe Ottoman Armenians experienced in 1915 had severe conclusions for the whole Armenian nation, Ottoman Empire and every individual who experienced it. Reflection of this unforgettable event in the field of theatre was the loss of a theatrical tradition, which was developing in terms of playwriting, acting and directing. However, the survivors of the Catastrophe carried the theatrical tradition to their new countries with themselves and managed to continue theatrical activity. Througout the study in order to understand how Armenian identity developed through plays and how they contributed in the formation of Armenian North American Diasporic identity, play texts written between 1939 and 2008 and nine plays from six playwrights are analyzed and discussed. The theatre of the Armenian North American Diaspora possessed a split character between the past and the present experiences in terms of Armenian identity. The thesis study also deals with the limits of the representation of the experience of the Genocide and the post-Genocide identity formation for the Armenians with a focus on the Armenian North American Diaspora.ABSTRACT ................................................................................................................ iii

Emigration and the diffusion of political Salafism:religious remittances and support for Salafi parties in Egypt during the Arab Spring
No full textThis study investigates the impact of emigration on the political behavior of citizens in Egypt. In particular, it argues that emigrants’ family members are more likely to vote for Salafi parties for several reasons, including the transfer of religious remittances by Egyptian emigrants to the Gulf and the influence of transnational Salafi networks. In order to test our argument, we conducted an original public opinion survey with around 1100 individuals between January 12, 2012 and January 25, 2012, just after the Egyptian parliamentary election. We find that individuals with family members who had emigrated to the Gulf voted heavily for Islamist parties, particularly the Freedom and Justice Party and the Nour Party. Further analysis shows that there is no statistical difference between individuals with and without emigrant family members in voting for the Muslim Brotherhood, while the Nour’s popularity among voters with emigrant family members is substantial and statistically significant. In particular, we find that the strongest support for the Nour came from individuals whose family members had immigrated to Saudi Arabia, whereas those whose family members had immigrated to other countries, including other Gulf countries, do not differ significantly from non-emigrant family members in their party preferences

Nationalization of the defense industry in Turkey : 2003-2017
Get PDFThis thesis elaborates on the nationalization of Turkish defense industry since the
invasion of Iraq in 2003. The objective of this thesis is to understand what explains
the recent increasing trend of nationalization of the defense industry in Turkey. It
firstly analyzes the regional conjuncture and lack of trust in allies so as to show how
it influences Turkey’s investments in the sector. Then, it moves on to explain the
domestic structure of the country which enables and inspires the politicians to
attribute greater importance to industrial self-reliance in defense. Lastly, it focuses
on the political economy of the defense industry and how big of an economy the
sector generates at the global level and for Turkey. This thesis concludes that focusing
on developing modern technology and production of specific arms of defense is more

Get PDFTez konusu “Türk Yabancılar Hukukunda Yabancıların Çalışma İzni” olup yüksek lisans
tezi kapsamında öncelikli olarak yabancıların çalışma hakkı kavramı ele alınmıştır.
Akabinde yabancıların yasaklı olduğu meslekler detaylı olarak anlatılmış ve neden
yasaklı olduklarına dair kanun ve madde atıflarına yer verilmiştir. Bir sonraki başlıkta
ise uluslararası hukuk kaynakları açısından çalışma izni incelenmiş, iki taraflı ve çok
taraflı sözleşmeler örneklerle birlikte açıklanmıştır. Daha sonrasında üçüncü bölümde
çalışma izinlerine ilişkin kanunlar Türk hukuku açısından incelenmiştir. Bu
incelemenin ilk kısmında genel olarak bir özet verilmiş, ikinci kısmında 4817 sayılı
Yabancıların Çalışma İzinleri Hakkında Kanun (Mülga) detaylı olarak ele alınmıştır. İşbu
kanun kapsamında yabancıların ve işverenlerin pratikte yaşadığı problemlere
hassasiyetle değinilmeye çalışılmıştır. Üçüncü bölümün üçüncü kısmında ise Ağustos
2016’da yürürlüğe giren 6735 sayılı Uluslararası İşgücü Kanunu değerlendirilmiştir.
Burada kanunun yeniliği ve uygulama yönetmeliğinin çıkışı arasındaki zaman aralığına
dikkat çekilmeye çalışılmıştır. Son olarak dördüncü bölümde ise yeni kanun ile ilk defa
gündeme gelen bazı kavramlar üzerinde hassasiyetle durulmuştur. “Yetkili Aracı
Kurum”, “Turkuaz Kart”, “Sınırötesi Hizmet Sunucusu” ve “Ön İzin Şartı” bunlardan
bazılarıdır. Yüksek Lisans tezinde olabildiğince pratik örneklerden hareket edilmeye
çalışılmış, okuyuculara teorik bilgiler ile birlikte süreçte yaşanan problemler göz
önünde tutularak günlük hayatın gerçekliğine dokunacak hukuki bilgiler verilmeye

Humidity SAW sensor sensitivity enhancement via electrospraying of silver nanowires
No full textIn this research we investigated the influence of surface coatings of silver nanowires the sensitivity of SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) humidity sensors. Silver nanowires, with PVP (Polyvinylpyrrolidone), which is a hydrophilic capping agent, were chemically synthesized with an average length of 15µm and an average diameter of 60nm. Humidity sensors, with a 433 MHz frequency dual-port resonator Rayleigh-SAW devices were coated by AgNWs (Silver Nanowires) using the electrospray coating method. It was demonstrated that increasing thickness of coated AgNW on the surface of SAW devices results in increased sensitivity. The highest frequency shift (262 kHz) in these SAW devices was obtained with injection of 0.5 ml of the solution with concentration of 0.5 mg/ml in injection rate of 1 ml/h. It also showed the highest humidity sensitivity among the other prepared SAW devices.Declaration of Authorship ii Abstract iii

More attention, less deficit:wearable eeg-based serious game for focus improvement
No full textAttention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD) are two of the most spread mental disorders characterized by the lack of attention and focus. One way to measure focus is through Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals that can be read using the new wireless EEG reading devices often used by Brain-computer Interface (BCI) researchers. In parallel, serious games have been recently providing opportunities for the rehabilitation of various cognitive and emotional deficiencies. In this paper, we put the two things together, and we design a virtual reality serious game using a wireless wearable EEG device to improve the focusing ability of people with ADHD and ADD. Our preliminary experiments with healthy subjects show an average improvement of 10% in engagement and 8% in focus for people using our EEG-controlled game compared to using the same game but keyboard-controlled
