Framing the figure:mental rotation revisited in light of cognitive strategies
The mental rotation literature commonly reports a
sex difference, almost always favoring men. Two strategies
have been proposed in the literature to account for this difference:
holistic and piecemeal. However, there is great variability
in rotation performance suggesting other possible contributing
factors. This study investigated the effects of stimuli
characteristics and habitual spatial thinking on mental rotation
performance. In three experiments, participants completed a
mental rotation task with two modifications: (1) 3-D figures
were presented with their cut versions to promote piecemeal
strategy, and (2) block figures were either presented within a
frame or none, in light of reference framework model or perceptual
grouping model. Overall, whole figures generated
faster responses than cut figures and this was more pronounced
with greater angular disparity. Shape or the presence
of a frame affected rotation performance. Having a frame
seemed to impede overall rotation, especially for cut figures,
supporting an object-based reference frame. However, a 3-D
frame did not have the same effect, possibly suggesting the
unitary configuration idea. Men rotated more accurately than
women, but still sex was not as robust as it was suggested in
the literature. Interestingly, there were similarities between
possible strategy use and habitual spatial thinking. People
who were categorized as having landmark-centered representations
and who preferred verbal directions showed a pattern
suggesting the use of a piecemeal strategy, and survey centered representations and map preference seemed to reflect
a holistic strategy

The role of memory in shaping social relations : a case study about the remembrance of Çorum massacre in 1980
This thesis examines memory narratives of witnesses of the Çorum events that
happened in 1980. I conducted an ethnographic study to examine how Alevi and
Sunni citizens differ in constructing a collective memory based on shared past and
the role of identity positions in the recollection of past images. To this end, first, I
investigated the narratives and organization of commemorations that memorialize
the events as a struggle against forgetting and form a master narrative. Second, I
analyze individual memory narratives about the events, which involves subjectivity
and collectivity concurrently. The data was collected through in-depth interviews
with thirty people who witnessed the events. The research reveals that although
images of the events are similar, the present conditions, and religious and political
belongings lead Alevi and Sunni citizens to differ in making sense of the past. While
for most Alevis I interviewed, remembering of the Çorum events represents a
struggle for keeping awareness of state repression and historical victimization, for
conservative and nationalist Sunni people, facing and making people remember the
events is considered problematic. This thesis provides insight into the relation
between memory and social identities as well as an understanding of the Alevi issue
through the examination of a local case.Abstract ........................................................................................................................ iv

Measures of a sustainable commute as a predictor of happiness
The ways in which we travel—by what mode, for how long, and for what purpose—can affect our sense of happiness and well-being. This paper assesses the relationships between measures of the sustainability of transportation systems in U.S. metropolitan areas and subjective well-being. Associations between self-reported happiness levels from the Gallup Healthways Well-being Index and commute data were examined for 187 core-based statistical areas (CBSA). Wealsosupplementthisquantitativeanalysisthroughbriefcasestudiesofhigh-andlow-performing happiness cities. Our quantitative results indicate that regions with higher commute mode shares by non-automobile modes generally had higher well-being scores, even when controlling for important economic predictors of happiness. We also find that pro-sustainable transportation policies can have implications for population-wide happiness and well-being. Our case studies indicate that both high and low scoring happiness cities demonstrate a dedicated commitment to improving sustainable transportation infrastructure. Our study suggests that cities that provide incentives for residents to use more sustainable commute modes may offer greater opportunity for happiness than those that do not

This article shows 4 element rectangular microstrip patch antenna which is designed using corporate feeding technique. The designed is simulated at a resonance frequency of 10.17 GHz. Input reflection coefficient parameter of this antenna has -30 dB path loss at the center frequency. The antenna's directive gain is almost 9.2 dB. Design and simulation of the antenna has been performed by Sonnet Software also to fabricate, two-sided FR4 copper substrate is determined

In this study, a microstrip antenna simulated between 1-11 GHz is manufactured and presented results with measurements. Then simulation results are presented. -S11- simulation and measurement results almost show perfect agreement. S11, the input reflection coefficient parameter has the value of -31.24 dB at the center frequency and the resonance frequency has the gain value of 11.21 dBi at 8.24 Ghz. Especially, the antenna has been exclusive with Slits and trapezoid centre piece
