1990 ve 2017 yılları arasında Türkiye'nin Birleşmiş Milletler Barış Gücü operasyonlarına katılımının incelenmesi
It is argued in recent literature that Turkey’s contribution to peacekeeping
operations, especially UN peacekeeping operations has risen between 2003 and
2017, compared to 1990 and 2002. Thanks to collected data, this thesis aims to find
whether Turkey’s contribution to peacekeeping operations, especially UN
peacekeeping operations really increased, and if there is such an increase, what the
reasons for it could be. In the light of collected data, this thesis advocates there is an
increase in Turkey’s participation in UN peacekeeping operations between 2003 and
2017, compared to 1990 and 2002.
In the literature, some authors explain this rise with domestic factors, while some
others claim international factor. Domestic reasons are demonstrated as follows:
More proactive foreign policy which stresses soft power, the rise of neo-Ottomanism,
neo-Islamism and Turkism; International factor is that middle powers’ willingness to
participate in peacekeeping operations after the end of the Cold War. I compared all
these arguments with the data I collected, and analyzed which arguments can be
supported. Then, the study showed that more proactive foreign policy which
emphasizes soft power could be impacted on Turkey’s increased role in UN
peacekeeping operations. Additionally, the rise of Neo-Ottomanism and Neo
Islamism could not explain the reasons behind the rise in Turkey’s participation to UN
peacekeeping missions. Also, due to lack of findings on whether Turkism affected or
did not affect on Turkey’s increased attendance to UN peacekeeping operations, the
thesis did not comment anything on this issue. Lastly, it is claimed since Turkey is also
a middle power, the rise in Turkey’s attendance to UN missions could be associated
with the middle powers’ volunterisim to contribute to UN missions, but since Turkey
did not take active role in missions like other middle powers, this was not given as an
actual reason for this issue.Abstract ....................................................................................................................... iv

Estimation of online reviews biases by Kalman filter
The purpose of the research is to study the presence of bias (sequential) in online reviews according to the collected data and quantify it. Estimation of bias is based on the Kalman filter. The Kalman filter belongs to a family of filters called Bayesian filters. The Kalman Filter is popular recursive estimator algorithms with no history of observations or estimates. Worth to mention there are other types of Kalman filters: Extended Kalman filter, Unscented Kalman Filter, Extended Information Filter, and Sparse Extended Information Filter. Selection of a filter and its performances depends on an application. In this study, we use the Kalman filter for linear models (LKF), which allowsoptimallinearestimation. Inthisstudy, alongsidewiththeKalmanfilterforlinear models, we use the Kalman filter for non-linear problems (NKF), and the Kalman Filter for a second-order systems (SOKF) to estimate biases in online reviews more efficiently.Declaration of Authorship ii

A collective biography study of musicians:patterns, networks and music as a “profession” in the late Ottoman era and the early republican years in Istanbul
This dissertation focuses on the musicians of Istanbul who experienced the
transitional period from the late Ottoman to the Early Republican years in Turkey.
By focusing on their career trajectories, the thesis seeks to understand the ways in
which musicians responded to broader socio-political changes.
The thesis offers a wide range of quantitative analyses that were generated in IBM
SPSS Statistics 23.0 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). The thesis explores the
geographical origins, birth dates, family backgrounds, education patterns, language
proficiency, occupational distribution with a view to bring the common as well as
the distinct features of musicians under investigation to light.
The study gives emphasis to the musicians’ mobility in Istanbul in order to enhance
the geographical understanding of music. The frequency analysis enabled this study
to identify the most frequented neighborhoods by musicians as well as the musical
interactions among the neighborhoods. Gephi, which is software to visualize social
connections, was used to show the most musically connected neighborhoods to
understand how the urban music was generated at the local level.
By addressing the issue of music education, the thesis aimed to show that musicians
were not monolithic but diverse and reflected different values about music. Many
modes of learning music lead to the formation of different musical identities. For the majority of musicians, it was perceived as part of the urban culture, and thereby
they built a non-professional (non-profit) relationship with it.
The dissertation pays particular attention to the emergence of music schools after
1909 and the radio broadcasts in 1927 to uncover the interactions between state
policies and music. The study perceives the role of these two institutions as a
turning point in music in terms of the transition from plurality in music-tradition to
cultural uniformity, the emergence of music as a “profession”, the re-organization
of musicians’ social status, and the remaking of women in music.CONTENTS:Abstract ......................................................................................................................... iv Öz .................................................................................................................................. vi Acknowledgements ..................................................................................................... viii List of Tables ................................................................................................................ xiv List of Figures ............................................................................................................. xvii List of Photos .............................................................................................................. xvii List of Maps ................................................................................................................. xix Abbreviations ............................................................................................................... xx CHAPTERS 1.INTRODUCTION ........................................................................................................... 1 1.1.
