Mineralogy of Soils from Different Agroecological Regions of Bangladesh : Region 17– Lower Meghna River Floodplain

    No full text
Bangladesh is consisting of 30 Agro–ecological Regions (AEZs) and different applied agricultural research has been conducted based on AEZ. An attempt has been taken to study the mineralogy of important soils from all AEZs of Bangladesh in order to provide basic information for applied research. As part of this attempt, the mineralogy of ten soils from five representative soil series (Silonia, Homna, Debidwar, Chandraganj and Chandina) of AEZ 17, Lower Meghna River Floodplain, was investigated. The soils of the AEZ were mostly medium textured, non–saline and very strongly acidic to slightly acidic in nature. The average content of <2 μm clay fraction was 14.2% and it varied from 8.7 to 19.1%. The 2–20 μm silt fraction lied between 27.5% and 57.6% with an average of 43.2%. The clay fraction was dominated by mica, chlorite and kaolinite in all the soils studied. Presence of two interstratified minerals namely, vermiculite–chlorite intergrade and mica–chlorite interstratified minerals were evident in some samples. The findings of the present study do not support the proposed mineralogical suite of mica–smectite for this AEZ

The Intent of Japanese Language Teachers Dispatched to Foreign Countries by JICA : A Case Study on the Japan Overseas Co-operation Volunteers

    No full text
In recent years, the number of Japanese learners has been increasing all over the world. Although the Japanese Government initiates and supports the study of the Japanese language in various parts of the world, the educational purpose of such efforts are not so clear. The forms of Japanese language study backed by the Japanese Government are diverse and sometimes viewed as a form of hobby. This study looks to clarify the purpose of such educational practices. In order to do so we have interviewed Japanese teachers and examined the results using PAC analysis; a form of analysis that allows for an assessment of opinions that have not previously been present in relevant discourse. We have incorporated sociological theory into this study and viewed the overseas Japanese language classroom as a society in itself. According to the structuration theory put forward by Giddens, it is action based on people’s practical consciousness that forms a society, and in this research we hope to precipitate such a consciousness through employing PAC analysis. We aim to clarify the intent of the study of Japanese overseas through looking into the practical consciousness of Japanese teachers working abroad. PAC analysis results reveal that Japanese teachers emphasize contact with the learner, focusing on a sense of fun and happiness that is born out of language learning. In conclusion, it seems that at first glance, when it comes to the educational purpose of learning Japanese, as well as with regards to communication between students and teachers in the classroom, importance is attributed to pursuing the enjoyment that comes from learning a language

Higher educational organizations are required to improve educational quality recently in order to faster active life-long learners, and take several educational methods for that purpose such as the establishment of learning support out of class settings for active learning. Portfolio, in particular, e-portfolio is one of the helpful tools to promote the reflecting and planning of learner\u27s learning outcome, which play an important role in the promotion of active learning. £-portfolio allows learner to store, manage, access, and maintain their learning outcome using electric devices, on the other hand, it has the functional limitations such as handwriting and annotations. However, the difference of learner\u27s perceived effects on their learning is under the discussion, due to the lack of the findings about comparative research between e-portfolio types. This research aims to investigate the differences of the learner\u27s perceived effects on their learning with between paper-based and e-portfolios. The findings reveal that paper-based portfolio was more effective than e-portfolio, in terms of the instructor\u27s presence and the perceived ease of the access to the feedback from instructors. The perceived effects of e-portfolio in terms of the management and access ware superior to that of paper-based portfolio

This paper reports on teaching English for specific purposes (ESP) to students in the School of Design. In the class, \u22Academic English 3\u22 for students studying design, the movie entitled \u22The Devil Wears Prada\u22 and a design technique textbook were used in order to motivate students to learn English. In the thirteenth and fourteenth week, each group of students (3-4 people per group) chose a few movies and design techniques and made a presentation concerning how the design techniques were used effectively in movies. Each group was required to submit a script (500-1000 words) and slides (10-20 pages) for the presentation. We analyzed the submitted scripts (12,241 words), focusing on the choices of design technique and lexical choices of each speaker quantitatively with respect to frequency levels based on \u22JACET8000\u22. The results showed that the students frequently chose design techniques such as \u22Rule of Thirds\u22 and \u22Color\u22 to explain how these techniques were used in movies. It was also found that they tended to avoid difficult words and chose basic vocabulary instead, using design terminology in some sentences in order to explain the terminology itself and/or how the design techniques were used effectively in movies. These results suggest that public-speaking training with movies and designs provided the students with opportunities to extend both their specialized knowledge of design and their linguistic knowledge of English

Intercollegiate athletic clubs at university : The reasons for participation and lack of participation

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to examine the reasons for participation in intercollegiate athletic clubs at university, through the use of text mining. A questionnaire survey was conducted among university freshmen (N=1087). The questionnaire inquired about participation in athletic clubs at high school and at university, as well as the reasons for participation in intercollegiate athletic clubs at university. The results indicated that 35% of university students participated in intercollegiate athletic clubs. Of the students who participated in high school clubs, 39% did not participate in intercollegiate clubs. Words that appeared frequently in free descriptions regarding the reasons for participation in intercollegiate athletic clubs at university were analyzed using morphological analysis. Next, refined categories were analyzed using category web. The following discoveries were made: (1) attitudes toward sports, previous participation in high school athletic clubs, and health influenced the likelihood of participating in intercollegiate athletic clubs at university; (2) the lack of of participation in intercollegiate athletic clubs at university was dependent upon a variety of personal values and environmental factors

The Birth of Kūkai as a Literary Figure : A Translation and Analysis of Shinzei\u27s Preface to the Henjō Hokki Shōryōshū

    No full text
Introduction About the Henjō hokki shōryōshū Shinzei\u27s Preface to the Shōryōshū Situating the Preface ConclusionKūkai, the founder of the Shingon school of Japanese esoteric Buddhism, is regarded as one of the finest kanshi 漢詩 poets of the early Heian period. Although the existence of numerous modern edited editions of his work serves as a testament to his ongoing canonical status, little scholarly attention has been paid to the actual process by which he was transformed into a full-fledged literatus. It was Shinzei, Kūkai\u27s senior disciple, who played a major role in promoting his master\u27s literary accomplishments. He was responsible for compiling the Henjō hokki shōryōshū, a collection of Kūkai\u27s non-doctrinal works, including many poems. His editorial duties also included composing a preface for the anthology, a key document in understanding the early stages of Kūkai\u27s memorialization as a poet. This paper will examine Kūkai\u27s literary canonization by presenting a complete, annotated English translation of Shinzei\u27s preface, and then situating it within the political milieu of the mid-ninth century
