Chen Zhen and the Obviousness of the Object
This article focuses on paradoxical contemporary artwork, based on the self-evidence of mundane objects in Prayer Wheel: “Money Makes the Mare Go” (Chinese Slang), created in New York in 1997 by Chen Zhen, a French-naturalized artist born in China. This installation was made using the personal experience of the artist following a trip to Tibet in 1983, which he made unwillingly. The time he spent with Tibetans changed his perspective to such a degree that he gave closer attention to everyday realities. The simplicity of this installation, firmly anchored in material triviality, requires going beyond appearances to better share its non-physical elements. Throughout his work, Chen built a genuine life project and thought pattern that he called “transexperience.
Histogram Interpolation Methods for Image Contrast Enhancement
Histogram equalization (HE) is a well-known technique for image contrast enhancement. However, HE frequently over-enhances the contrast of a given image to produce false contours in the enhanced image. One of the reasons for the production of false contours is the sparseness of the equalized histogram, which means that there exist gaps in continuous-tone. In this paper, we propose three methods for interpolating the sparse histogram obtained by HE, and utilize the interpolated histograms as the target ones for histogram specification or histogram matching, which transforms the histogram of a given image into the specified target histogram. Filling the gaps in equalized histogram by interpolation, we can reduce the occurrence of false contours. Experimental results show that the proposed methods can alleviate the over-enhancement of the contrast, which occurs frequently when we use HE. We also evaluate the quality of contrast-enhanced images by using three image quality measures, where the proposed methods achieve better performance than HE in many cases

Through the lens of a work of calligraphy he produced to commemorate that occasion, this piece explores not only Sun Yat-sen’s activities, thoughts, and emotions during this visit but also the message he may have intended to convey to the numerous people who have visited the University’s Central Library on Hakozaki Campus, where the framed plaque still hangs today
Haemolytic actinoporins interact with carbohydrates using their lipid-binding module
Pore-forming toxins (PFTs) are proteins endowed with metamorphic properties that enable them to stably fold in water solutions as well as in cellular membranes. PFTs produce lytic pores on the plasma membranes of target cells conducive to lesions, playing key roles in the defensive and offensive molecular systems of living organisms. Actinoporins are a family of potent haemolytic toxins produced by sea anemones vigorously studied as a paradigm of α-helical PFTs, in the context of lipid–protein interactions, and in connection with nanopore technologies. We have recently reported that fragaceatoxin C (FraC), an actinoporin, engages biological membranes with a large adhesive motif allowing the simultaneous attachment of up to four lipid molecules prior to pore formation. Since actinoporins also interact with carbohydrates, we sought to understand the molecular and energetic basis of glycan recognition by FraC. By employing structural and biophysical methodologies, we show that FraC engages glycans with low affinity using its lipid-binding module. Contrary to other PFTs requiring separate domains for glycan and lipid recognition, the small single-domain actinoporins economize resources by achieving dual recognition with a single binding module. This mechanism could enhance the recruitment of actinoporins to the surface of target tissues in their marine environment. Study on Utilization of Solar Heat Energy in Detached House with Central Air Conditioning and Circulation System : Part 2 Measurement Results and Energy Load Reduction Effects
In order to reduce the energy consumption of houses, it is essential to reduce heating and hot water supply energy, which accounts for about 60% of energy consumption. Therefore we propose a new air conditioning and solar heat collection system to supplement 50% or more of the heating and hot water supply energy. We constructed 6 test houses in 6 regions of different climate characteristics and measured temperature, humidity and energy consumption. Based on these studies it was concluded that an indoor temperature and humidity environment variation is constantly affected by air circulation system. The measured energy conservation effectiveness of solar heat utilization for reduction of heat load requirements are over 50% at 5 locations in winter. The effects of using passive method in summertime is studied. Two types of analysis evaluated as an external air load reduction rate of the total heat exchanger exceeds 60% in each area, and the air conditioner operates with low load and high efficiency in the system. The measurement and numerical simulation were shown the accuracy of the numerical simulation was confirmed with the observation results
