Growth Response of Rice and Paddy Weeds Under Elevated Temperatures
No full textThis study was conducted to investigate the growth response of rice and annual paddy weeds under elevated temperatures. In the context of climate change, temperature is one of the most important climatic factors influencing the growth of crops as well as weeds. Rice and three major annual paddy weeds (Monochoria vaginalis, Echinochloa crus–galli, and Ludwigia prostrata) were grown under different temperature regimes (ambient, ambient+0.8°C, ambient+1.9°C, and ambient+3.4°C). Results revealed that the growth of rice and three annual paddy weed species increased with the temperature rise in the phytotrons. Above ground dry weight of rice was 1.31, 1.67, and 1.73 times higher at ambient+0.8, +1.9 and +3.4°C, respectively, than it was at ambient. Similar growth responses to rice was observed in E. crus–galli and M. vaginalis under the elevated temperatures. L. prostrate exhibited the most significant increases in leaf stage, leaf area, plant height, and plant dry weight, which were, respectively, 2.94, 3.57, 1.69 and 2.86 times higher at ambient+3.4°C than at ambient. Our findings suggest that climate change in the form of instant rising of temperatures might have an influence on the growth of rice and weeds and might confer relatively low competitive ability to rice
Information provision from university at earthquake disasters : As a public assistance for students including foreign students
No full textThe 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake in April has strongly impressed us the fact that a powerful earthquake could occur in the area where earthquakes were thought to be few. The fact also indicates the necessity and importance of the preparation for strong earthquake and subsequent damages. Student of Kansei Communication PTLIII focused on the response and information provision related to the disaster by universities at the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. The care and information provision for foreign students were also focused. Information provision through website of several universities in the cities of Kumamoto, Oita, and Fukuoka were overlooked for a month. The differences among each university were compared and several problems were extracted. We proposed that university should do (1) frequent release of safety confirmation information and of visual information of damage situation, (2) information provision in multi-language, which has equivalent quantity and quality to the information in Japanese, (3) making smooth access on web and prior well-known enforcement for disaster prevention information, and (4) prior well-known enforcement not only for university members but also for surrounding public people who might come to evacuate to the university campus
Study on Patent Trends for Food Waste Recycling Technology
No full textFood waste in Korea occupied approximately 26% of the total municipal waste in the year 2013; therefore, the food waste recycling business has been expanded as an alternative to disposal. This study was conducted to assess the competitiveness of Korean technology, research, and development in leading companies by analyzing food waste treatment and recycling patent trends in Japan, Europe, China, the United States, and Korea. A total of 22,972 valid patents publicized or registered between 1990 (by filing date) and May of 2014 (by research initiation date) were reviewed and categorized by technology. The collection–treatment and composting fields both had a steady rise in core technology. Patents related to saline administration, decomposition control, sterilization, odor elimination, and separation of foreign matter were applied for in the collection–treatment field. A number of patents related to composting processes and material utilization were applied for, whereas very few patents related to composting technology were applied for, implying that research for further technical development is necessary
