Periphery of Participant Observation : An Auto-ethnography on the Kurokawa Noh in Shonai District
はじめに 1.民俗能の世界へ 2.体得のフィールドワーク 3.民俗能の広がり おわりにThis paper is a self-referential report regarding an ethnological research of Kurokawa Noh by the author. At the same time, it is a kind of attempt at auto-ethnography. What motivated me to make this report is a collaborative study which investigated the process of how researchers is participated themselves in the societies they focused on in their ethnological or anthropological field investigations, using an index of embodied knowledge. In my case, I focused on the socio-cultural community of folklore Noh plays (Kurokawa Noh) in Shonai District in Yamagata Prefecture. In order to conduct the ethnological field work, I tried to observe the following two cultural communities. For one of them, I participated in a community where Kurokawa Noh was handed down, associating the citizens and Noh players there. Then, I participated in the social and cultural world of Noh plays comprised of Noh play lovers and performers, as well as the body of knowledge of Noh plays, which is one of the Japanese traditional performing arts. Especially, in the case of the latter, not only did I learn Noh by literatures, but I also watched a variety of folklore Noh plays and learned about them by doing Mai and Utai. By describing the process of my participation in the two communities, I found the following three points. 1) As the research on folklore Noh plays advanced, for me, learning about Noh, which had been only a measure of research, turned into an object, an interest, and a joy in itself. 2) By learning that Mai and Utai represent stories about the local guardian god in the Noh class of my home town, I was able to have an experience to feel an attachment and an identity to my home town through bodily performing. 3) Experiences shown in 1) and 2) enabled me to set out a course for implicitly understanding the folklore Noh plays, which are connected to particular districts or lives, seen from the viewpoint of the peoples there
All-optical observation and reconstruction of spin wave dispersion
To know the properties of a particle or a wave, one should measure how its energy changes with its momentum. The relation between them is called the dispersion relation, which encodes essential information of the kinetics. In a magnet, the wave motion of atomic spins serves as an elementary excitation, called a spin wave, and behaves like a fictitious particle. Although the dispersion relation of spin waves governs many of the magnetic properties, observation of their entire dispersion is one of the challenges today. Spin waves whose dispersion is dominated by magnetostatic interaction are called pure-magnetostatic waves, which are still missing despite of their practical importance. Here, we report observation of the band dispersion relation of pure-magnetostatic waves by developing a table-top all-optical spectroscopy named spin-wave tomography. The result unmasks characteristics of pure-magnetostatic waves. We also demonstrate time-resolved measurements, which reveal coherent energy transfer between spin waves and lattice vibrations
Phase Contrast Imaging of Microsegregation of JIS ADCI2 Alloy and Damage Behavior
A single-distance phase retrieval technique was applied to the contrast-enhanced phase-sensitive imaging of micro segregation in die-cast aluminum alloy. Contrast between regions with and without micro segregation, spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio were evaluated to clearly differentiate micro segregations whose density difference from the matrix aluminum is small, making it difficult to visualize and differentiate them using ordinary absorption-contrast imaging. Since spatial resolution more or less drops during the phase retrieval process, a combination of the high-contrast phase-contrast imaging and the high-resolution absorption-contrast imaging was applied to reveal 3D microstructure/fracture relationship in an in-situ tensile test. Each phase-contrast image was registered with a corresponding absorption-contrast image to examine the positional relationship between the fracture path and micro segregation. A sectioning technique was also applied to identify the source of density difference. The results confirmed that three-dimensionally connected bands of micro segregations provide a preferential path for fracture in the die-cast aluminum alloy investigated. The observations suggest that the control of the 3D spatial distribution of micro segregation bands is of crucial importance for enhancing mechanical properties effectively even if its elimination is physically difficult
