Foam formation in lakes: a long term analysis conducted on Lake Maggiore (northern Italy)
The causes and origin of foams in lakes have been rarely object of studies, although this phenomenon may cause problems to touristic or fisheries activities and imply a possible risk to human health. The formation of foams in the aquatic environment is due to the accumulation of surfaceactive compounds (surfactants) at the air-water interface joined with the mechanic action of a forcing (such as wind or waves) able to inject gas bubbles in the upper water layer. Surfactants can be either of natural or synthetic origin. Fulvic or humic acids, lipidic, proteic or colloidal substances are examples of natural surfactants that can promote foam formation, while man-made foams are generally due to the release of phosphates from agriculture and/or to the presence of organic and inorganic detergents. A comprehensive analysis of three foam episodes in Lake Maggiore (2007, 2008 and 2010) has been undertaken to identify their origin, causes and to unravel most likely factors triggering foam formation. At this scope, a long term (2000-2013) analysis of phytoplankton biovolumes and meteorological and hydrological anomalies has been performed together with the chemical characterization of foams. Foam resulted of endogenous origin, related to phytoplankton biomass degradation. The long term analysis highlighted atypical warm temperatures and residual lake stratification in winter in two of the years of foam events, coupled with exceptional Bacillariophyceae blooms in spring. Tabellaria flocculosa mostly contributed in terms of biomass in 2007 and 2008, but not in 2010, and overall total algal biomass seemed a better predictor of the risk of foam formation. Foam events occurred from July to December, driven by atypically high windy conditions, and congruently with the time needed to degrade biomass into surfactant compounds. A co-occurrence of different factors resulted essential to generate foams, and climate changes likely contributed to enhance their occurrence in Lake Maggiore
Use of Azolla as a growing medium component in the nursery production of olive trees
Peat is used in olive-tree nurseries as a component in commercial growing media. Environmental and economic pressures are questioning the use of peat as a component of substrates. In order to remain competitive and to satisfy environmental concerns, it is necessary to identify and evaluate possible alternatives to peat. This study involves the use of Azolla filiculoides, as a growing media component in olive nurseries (Olea europaea L.) for containerized plants. Four treatments were established, based on the addition of increasing quantities of Azolla (0%, 25%, 50%, and 100 %). Were determined some physical and chemical properties of media, the growth, the physiological parameters and nutritional state of olive plants. The physical and chemical properties of the media were significantly affected by the Azolla content. Nursery-produced olive plants grown in substrates supplemented by 50 % Azolla displayed linear growth and the total biomass production greater than those of the control medium. The research indicated that Azolla might be suitable substrate component for olive plants grown in containers

Platform Prototype Early Validation Results
The main goal of this deliverable is to early collect end-users feedback about the platform implemented functionalities for the sake of the Learn PAd consortium. End-users needs and expectations are driving forces of the Learn PAd project, that is why a validation has been carried out to ensure that the early version of the Learn PAd platform properly addresses them. The early validation was carried out considering the running instance of the Learn PAd platform available (since 06 November 2015) at the address: http://testbed.learnpad.eu/. A group of users sampledfrom both the project demonstrators tested the Learn PAd platform and provided us with feedback and comments to improve it. Results from such validation are reported in the first part of this deliverable. Moreover, even if not explicitly requested in the DoW, a further validation was also done to check the goodness of BPMN modelling understandability guidelines that we defined in WP4. This further validation involved a questionnaire and a focus group with the aim to guarantee that the defined BP modelling understandability guidelines actually contribute to improve BP model understandability. In the second part of this deliverable we report in detail the results of the modelling guidelines validation. From the guidelines validation, we can assert that models designed following BPMN modelling understandability guidelines indeed result to be better understandable than the ones generated by not following the guidelines. In fact, for such reason the BP models used in the deployed running instance of the Learn PAd platform involved in the user early validation are those conforming to the guidelines
Architectural Assessment of the First Version of the Platform
D2.3 is the third deliverable of Learn PAd Work-Package 2. It aims to assess the implementation of Learn PAd platform and give feedback on the implementation of the platform with respect to the defined architecture and the elicited requirements
Requirements Assessment Report
This document presents assessment results that are acquired through the T1.3 activities; (1) collection of status of requirement from individual work packages that are directly commissioned for realization of identified requirements during the requirement analysis activities and (2) analysis and measurement of the realization status of requirements that are reported in individual work package assessment reports, and finally discovering the holistic status, which represents entire status throughout work packages. The document introduces the identified methodology for requirement assessment that enables discovering the holistic status for each requirement in each of the four Learn PAd system dimensions. The document presents, subsequently, individual assessment reports from seven work packages, which are used as input to discover holistic realization status of requirements within first 12-Month-Period. Afterwards, discovered holistic status and relevant statistics, collected observations and remarks are provided in the document to hand over them as input to upcoming evaluation activities
