Teachers’ knowledge and experimentation with graphing calculator: nuances of a thematic project
In this article, we discuss how visualization and experimentation with technology can be addressed in Mathematics classes based on teachers' demands and needs. For this purpose, we consider two research contexts: one of them, the data production from an ongoing doctoral study, where a training course was proposed with Mathematics teachers, leading to the development of an activity by one of the participating teachers in their classroom; and the other one, it was developed within the context of a completed master's research, where data production occurred in an elective course taught collaboratively by the school teacher and the researcher, with one of the discussions focusing on the Python programming language. Both studies are part of the thematic project Teaching and Learning Mathematics with Calculators: Possibilities for Teacher Practice and had their data produced in the second semester of 2022 in the city of São Carlos. The data discussed in this article come from the researchers' field diary, activities assigned by the teacher, written responses from students to a questionnaire, transcripts of classroom dialogues, and files saved on the graphing calculator. Additionally, we highlight that teachers' repertoire of knowledge was crucial for the experimentation with technology, particularly with graphing calculator, to occur in both scenarios. Additionally, we reflect on the importance of the relationship between university and school, as despite of the importance of teachers' knowledge for the configuration of the observed heuristic environments, this relationship was the basis for the evidenced developments to take place.Neste artigo discutimos como a visualização e a experimentação com tecnologias podem ser abordadas nas aulas de Matemática, partindo de demandas e necessidades dos professores. Para isso, consideramos dois contextos de pesquisa: um deles, a produção de dados de um doutoramento em desenvolvimento, em que houve a proposta de um curso de formação com professores que ensinam Matemática, o que propiciou o desenvolvimento de uma atividade por um dos professores cursistas em sua sala de aula; o outro, no contexto de uma pesquisa de mestrado já finalizada, no qual a produção de dados se deu em uma disciplina eletiva ministrada pela professora da escola e a pesquisadora de maneira colaborativa, que teve como uma de suas discussões a linguagem de programação em Python. Ambas as pesquisas fazem parte do projeto temático Ensino e aprendizagem de Matemática com calculadoras: possibilidades para a prática do professor e tiveram seus dados produzidos no segundo semestre de 2022, na cidade de São Carlos. Neste artigo, discutimos os dados provenientes do diário de campo das pesquisadoras, atividade aplicada pelo professor, respostas escritas dos estudantes a um questionário, transcrição dos diálogos em sala de aula e arquivos salvos na calculadora gráfica. Concluindo, destacamos que o repertório de saberes docentes foi determinante para que a experimentação com tecnologias, em particular com a calculadora gráfica, ocorresse em ambos os cenários. Woody flora of the Prof. Dr. Karl Arens Reserve, Corumbataí, São Paulo, Brazil
Background This study was conducted in the Prof. Dr. Karl Arens Reserve, Corumbataí, São Paulo. The area is a Cerrado fragment, with no records of fire since 1962 and is characterised by the predominance of Cerradão phytophysiognomy. Although several studies have been conducted in the Reserve, there was no testimony material for some species in the Herbarium Rioclarense (HRCB), nor a list of vouchers for any taxon in the main publications. Thus, the objective of this work was to undertake a floristic survey of the woody species in the Reserve, based on herbarium specimens and fieldwork. New information The survey in HRCB recorded 510 exsiccatae belonging to 160 species and 44 families. We also conducted 24 fieldwork expeditions between 2019 and 2021 and recorded 118 species in 39 families. In total, 193 woody species were recorded for the Reserve in Corumbataí. Species such as Copaifera langsdorffii and Myrcia neoclusiifolia had already been cited for the area, but there was no testimony material in the herbarium. Machaerium nyctitans and Alchornea glandulosa are examples of new records for the Reserve. Body fat is related to poor motor skills and physical fitness in socially assisted children and adolescents regardless of age, sex, and lean soft tissue
Objective: To analyze the relationship between body fat (BF), motor skills, and physical fitness in children and adolescents. Methods: In total, 216 children and adolescents (143 males and 73 females, aged 5–15 years) from a social project composed this study. Body mass and height were measured to calculate the body mass index (BMI). DXA was used to estimate the percentage of BF and lean soft tissue. The Körperkoordinationstest für Kinder (KTK) was used to assess motor skills (jumping sideways test corresponds to speed, walking backwards to balance, and moving sideways to laterality), modified pull-ups to measure upper limb strength and the 1-mile run/walk test to estimate maximal oxygen uptake. Results: In the unadjusted models, BF was a significant negative predictor for almost all motor skills and physical fitness variables measured; jumping sideways (β = −0.168, 95%CI = −0.402; 0.039), walking backwards (β = −0.010, 95%CI = −0.011; −0.008), modified pull-ups (β = −0.045, 95%CI = −0.052; −0.037), and 1-mile run/walk (β = −0.18, 95%CI = −0.39; −0.06), but not moving sideways (β = −0.05, 95%CI = −0.12; 0.05). In the model considering sex and age, the significance remained the same as in the model without adjustment. When we added lean soft tissue to these adjustments, all variables were significant; jumping sideways (β = −0.544, 95%CI = −0.834; −0.253), walking backwards (β = −0.007, 95%CI = −0.010; −0.004), modified pull-up (β = −0.020, 95%CI = −0.028; −0.013), 1-mile run/walk (β = −0.386, 95%CI = −0.505; −0.267), and moving sideways (β = −0.07, 95%CI = −0.14; −0.01). Education for ethnic-racial relations and Maracatu in Early Childhood Education: pedagogical Possibilities
A presente pesquisa visa contribuir com reflexões e proposições pedagógicas no contexto da Educação Infantil que dialoguem com a valorização da cultura afro-brasileira, por meio da manifestação cultural do Maracatu. Para isso, analisa-se seu contexto cultural e histórico, bem como suas expressões corporais, promovendo, a partir dessas características e da fundamentação teórica, uma educação voltada para as relações étnico-raciais. Diante desse contexto, o objetivo geral da pesquisa consistiu em desenvolver e analisar os processos educativos decorrentes de uma práxis pedagógica baseada na manifestação cultural do Maracatu na Educação Infantil. Os objetivos específicos foram: promover uma proposta de práxis pedagógica com foco no ensino e na aprendizagem do Maracatu e na valorização dessa manifestação cultural, fundamentada na Educação para as Relações Étnico-Raciais; elaborar, como produto educacional, um livro infantil centrado no Maracatu; e analisar os processos educativos decorrentes da práxis pedagógica com o Maracatu. A metodologia adotada baseou-se na pesquisa qualitativa participante, utilizando como técnicas de coleta de dados a observação de campo e as rodas de conversa, registradas por meio do diário de campo. A pesquisa contou com a participação de 18 crianças. Os dados gerados foram analisados em duas categorias. A primeira, intitulada “‘É o batuque!’: Conhecendo e vivenciando o Maracatu”, evidenciou a compreensão significativa das crianças sobre essa manifestação cultural, sua estrutura e seus símbolos, bem como o reconhecimento dos instrumentos utilizados no cortejo, que foram nomeados e manipulados com confiança. Além disso, por meio das manifestações corporais, as crianças demonstraram uma conexão com o ritmo e a performance musical do Maracatu. A segunda categoria, intitulada “‘O Maracatu é uma manifestação cultural com dança’: Caminhos para uma Educação para as Relações Étnico-Raciais”, revelou o conhecimento e a conscientização das crianças sobre as contribuições dos povos africanos para a formação da cultura brasileira por meio do Maracatu, reconhecido como uma expressão de resistência cultural. Conclui-se que a proposta de práxis pedagógica na Educação Infantil contribuiu para o desenvolvimento de uma educação sensível, socialmente justa e voltada para a valorização da manifestação cultural do Maracatu. Juntamente com a dissertação, construímos como produto educacional, um livro infantil, intitulado: “Maracatu, que história é essa?”, dialogando com os temas Maracatu e questões raciais de forma a ampliar e fortalecer o repertório cultural afro-brasileiro no contexto escolar da infância.This research aims to contribute with reflections and pedagogical propositions in the context of Early Childhood Education that engage with the appreciation of AfroBrazilian culture through the cultural expression of Maracatu. To achieve this, it analyzes its cultural and historical context, as well as its bodily expressions, promoting—based on these characteristics and the theoretical foundation—an education focused on ethnic-racial relations. In this context, the general objective of the research was to develop and analyze the educational processes resulting from a pedagogical praxis based on the cultural expression of Maracatu in Early Childhood Education. The specific objectives were: to promote a pedagogical praxis proposal focused on the teaching and learning of Maracatu and the appreciation of this cultural manifestation, grounded in Education for Ethnic-Racial Relations; to develop, as an educational product, a children’s book centered on Maracatu; and to analyze the educational processes resulting from the pedagogical praxis involving Maracatu. The methodology adopted was based on participatory qualitative research, using field observation and talking circles as data collection techniques, recorded through a field diary. The research included the participation of 18 children. The data generated were analyzed in two categories. The first, titled “‘It’s the drumming!’: Discovering and Experiencing Maracatu,” highlighted the children’s meaningful understanding of this cultural expression, its structure, and its symbols, as well as their recognition of the instruments used in the parade, which were confidently named and handled. Moreover, through bodily expressions, the children demonstrated a connection with the rhythm and musical performance of Maracatu. The second category, titled “‘Maracatu is a cultural expression with dance’: Pathways to an Education for Ethnic-Racial Relations,” revealed the children’s knowledge and awareness of the contributions of African peoples to the formation of Brazilian culture through Maracatu, recognized as an expression of cultural resistance. It is concluded that the proposed pedagogical praxis in Early Childhood Education contributed to the development of a sensitive, socially just education aimed at valuing the cultural expression of Maracatu. Alongside the dissertation, we developed, as an educational product, a children’s book titled “Maracatu, What Story Is This?”, engaging with the themes of Maracatu and racial issues in order to expand and strengthen the Afro-Brazilian cultural repertoire within the school context of childhood
Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) peptide-positive neuron populations in the enteric nervous system of the porcine descending colon depend on age and gender
The enteric nervous system (ENS) is a complex structure located in the wall of the gastrointestinal tract. One of the less-known active substances found in the ENS is cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript peptide (CART). It is known that CART-positive enteric neurons take part in the reactions to pathological stimuli, but knowledge of physiological stimuli-dependent changes in their population is extremely limited. The aim of the present study was to investigate the age- and gender-dependent diversities in the distribution of CART-positive neurons in the porcine colonic ENS using the double immunofluorescence technique. The obtained results have shown that age affects the number of CART-positive neurons in the colonic ENS and the character and intensity of age-caused changes depend on the type of the enteric plexus, and the most visible changes have been noted in the myenteric plexus in which the percentage of CART-positive neurons amounted to 22.3 ± 0.2% in young females, 20.7 ± 0.4% in young males, 23.7 ± 0.2% in adult females and 25.8 ± 01% in adult males. Moreover, during the present study, sex-dependent diversities in the percentage of CART-positive neurons were found, especially in adult animals. The obtained results suggest that CART in the ENS takes part in neuroplasticity processes occurring during the development, maturation and/or aging of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as that the number of CART-positive neurons is controlled by sex hormones and depends on the gender. Dimensional and structural alterations of surgical guides under various storage conditions and time intervals
Guias cirúrgicos impressos em 3D oferecem maior precisão, previsibilidade e conforto em cirurgias, mas há lacunas sobre o método ideal de armazenamento e o período máximo de viabilidade desses dispositivos. Alterações dimensionais ou estruturais podem causar complicações cirúrgicas e erros no posicionamento de implantes. Este estudo analisou a resina Dima® Print-Guide & Tray (Kulzer-Alemanha) para determinar alterações estruturais e dimensionais em diferentes métodos de armazenamento e tempos. Os corpos de prova foram fabricados por manufatura aditiva e divididos em três grupos: SC (simulação seca), ML (simulação molhada) e RF (simulação refrigerada), com subdivisões em tempos de armazenamento de 1, 7, 14 e 21 dias. Foram avaliadas alterações dimensionais em unidades volumétricas e estruturais via Espectroscopia de Infravermelho (FTIR). Os resultados indicaram que o armazenamento seco (SC) é o mais eficaz, preservando a estabilidade dimensional e estrutural por até 14 dias sem alterações significativas. No armazenamento molhado (ML), alterações ocorreram após 7 dias, e no refrigerado (RF), após 14 dias. Esses achados fornecem diretrizes práticas para o manejo de guias cirúrgicos, promovendo maior segurança, eficiência e previsibilidade nos procedimentos odontológicos.3D-printed surgical guides offer enhanced precision, predictability, and comfort during surgeries. However, there are gaps in the literature regarding the optimal storage method and the maximum viability period for these devices. Dimensional or structural changes can lead to surgical complications and errors in implant placement. This study analyzed the Dima® Print-Guide & Tray resin (Kulzer, Germany) to evaluate structural and dimensional changes under different storage methods and durations. The test specimens were produced using additive manufacturing and divided into three groups: SC (dry simulation), ML (wet simulation), and RF (refrigerated simulation). Each group was further subdivided based on storage durations of 1, 7, 14, and 21 days. Dimensional changes were assessed in volumetric terms, and structural changes were analyzed using Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that dry storage (SC) was the most effective method, maintaining dimensional and structural stability for up to 14 days without significant alterations. In contrast, changes were observed in wet storage (ML) after 7 days and in refrigerated storage (RF) after 14 days. These findings provide practical guidelines for the proper management of surgical guides, ensuring greater safety, efficiency, and predictability in dental procedures
Influence of melatonin supplementation on tissue response of endodontic sealers in Wistar rats
Objective: This study evaluated the influence of melatonin supplementation on tissue’s response of endodontic sealers in Wistar rats. Methodology: Forty-eight rats received subcutaneous implants of four polyethylene tubes: one empty (control) and three filled with endodontic sealers (AH Plus, Endofill and Sealapex). Half of the animals were supplemented with melatonin (ME) and the remaining treated with water (WA) for 15 days before the implantation until euthanasia, forming the groups: control-WA, AH Plus-WA, Endofill-WA, Sealapex-WA, Control-ME, AH Plus-ME, Endofill-ME and Sealapex-ME. After 5, 15 and 30 days, (n = 8) tubes were removed and evaluated in H&E., immunohistochemistry, PSR, VK and POL. The results were statistically analyzed (p 0.05). Comparing the individual response of each sealer, over a 30-day period, Endofill-ME and Sealapex-ME showed less inflammatory infiltrate compared to Endofill-WA and Sealapex-WA, respectively (p < 0.05). Immunostaining for IL-6 and TNF-α was less intense for all groups in animals supplemented with melatonin, in most periods, except for the Endofill sealer (p < 0.05). Furthermore, Endofill-ME at 5 days and AH-Plus-ME at 30 days showed a higher percentage of mature collagen fibers compared to the Endofill-WA and AH Plus-WA, respectively (p < 0.05). Positive structures for von Kossa staining and birefringent to polarized light were observed only for Sealapex-WA and Sealapex-ME in all periods. Avaliação da atratividade de diferentes formulações de iscas para monitoramento de adultos de Liriomyza sativae (Diptera: Agromyzidae)
The growing need for sustainable agricultural practices drives the search for effective alternatives in pest management. Insects like Liriomyza sativae cause significant damage to crops, requiring monitoring and control methods that minimize the use of chemical pesticides. In this context, the use of natural and synthetic attractants for pest capture offers a promising solution while contributing to the preservation of ecological balance. The objective of this work was to study the attractive effect of different formulations for L. sativae adults. The formulations were divided into two groups according to their composition. For group 1, they were based on vinegar and sugar, and for group 2, formulations were based on molasses, invert sugar, hydrolyzed protein, and eugenold. The attractiveness of the formulations was evaluated based on free choice. They were placed in tube-shaped plastic containers and randomly arranged in TNT cages. Evaluations were performed every 48 hours by counting the number of adults in the containers until there was a low capture rate. Data were subjected to analysis of variance testing and means were compared using the Scott-Knott test at 5% significance level. All formulations tested were attractive to adults of L. sativae, with groups 1 and 2 reaching their maximum averages of 55.60 and 68.00 adults, respectively. Both occurred during the second evaluation. Over time, all formulations showed a reduction in capture rate. The use of effective attractants promotes traps that monitor and even control the pest population in a more sustainable way, benefiting the agroecosystem with sustainable agricultural practices. Reviving knowledge: A 70-year gap in the host-parasite relationship between Trichodectes galictidis Werneck, 1934 (Ischnocera: Trichodectidae) and Galictis cuja (Molina, 1782) (Carnivora: Mustelidae)
Galictis cuja is one of the least known mustelids in South America, with its frequency and distribution poorly documented across the Neotropical region from Mexico to Brazil. In February 2024, a female was rescued by fishermen on Porto Beach in Imbituba, Santa Catarina. A clinical examination revealed ectoparasites on the animal, identified as Trichodectes galictidis, a louse species not detected in these animals for over 70 years. This study explores the revival of knowledge regarding the host-parasite relationship between Trichodectes galictidis and Galictis cuja, highlighting a significant research gap. Through a literature review and new data obtained using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the study documents previously unrecorded characteristics of the parasite.
