Deciphering river–aquifer connectivity in the headwaters of São Francisco River using chemical tracers and stable isotopes

    No full text
Climate change, anthropogenic activities, and global economic pressures have threatened the water security of large populations. In this context, the São Francisco River Basin (SFRB), one of Brazil's major river basins, has experienced reduced water flow and storage, particularly during the dry season when water demand exceeds supply. This study combined (i) isotopic analyses (δ²H and δ¹⁸O) of surface waters across the entire SFRB with (ii) an integrated hydrochemical and stable isotope approach in the headwaters region of the São Francisco River (sub-basin São Francisco 1 – SF1) to characterize river-aquifer connectivity in these areas. Understanding this connectivity provides a technical foundation for sustainable water resource management to ensure present and future water security. The BHRSF covers a vast territory with varied precipitation regimes across different physiographic regions, encompassing porous, karstic, and fractured aquifer systems. SF1 experiences seasonal precipitation, with rainy summers and dry winters, and includes fractured, fractured-granular, and fractured-karstic aquifers. Results from the SFRB indicate average values of -24.98‰ for δ²H and -3.86‰ for δ¹⁸O, with progressive enrichment downstream. Depleted d-excess values after the discharge of the Urucuia Aquifer System point to a significant contribution of groundwater discharge in the region. In SF1, hydrochemical and isotopic patterns differed between wet and dry seasons. Groundwater and surface water exhibited low mineralization, with average electrical conductivity of 147.2 ± 99.4 μS.cm⁻¹ and 65.7 ± 78.7 μS.cm⁻¹, respectively. The ionic abundance (Ca²⁺ > Na⁺ > Mg²⁺ > K⁺ for cations; HCO₃⁻ > SO₄²⁻ > Cl⁻ > NO₃⁻ > F⁻ > PO₄³⁻ for anions) indicated a predominance of calcium/magnesium bicarbonate waters, influenced by rock-water interactions and seasonal precipitation. Isotopic dynamics in precipitation showed strong seasonality, with depleted values in the wet season (-63.87‰ for δ²H; -9.86‰ for δ¹⁸O) and enriched values in the dry season (-5.12‰ for δ²H; -2.12‰ for δ¹⁸O). In contrast, groundwater isotopic composition remained stable (-43.71‰ for δ²H; -6.70‰ for δ¹⁸O), while surface water fluctuated (-44.95‰ for δ²H and -7.07‰ for δ¹⁸O in the wet season; -38.12‰ for δ²H and -6.14‰ for δ¹⁸O in the dry season), reflecting direct precipitation influence. Bayesian mixing models indicated that groundwater discharge is the primary source of surface flow (60–85% contribution), supplemented by wet-season precipitation. These results demonstrate that the hydrological dynamics in the BHRSF—especially in SF1—are strongly influenced by aquifer discharge, particularly during dry periods, reinforcing the critical role of aquifers in maintaining water security in the basin. This highlights the need for sustainable water use policies, optimizing allocations during scarcity periods.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)OutraCAPES: 001.CNPq: 140784/2022-5.IAEA CRP F30059

First biological report on Steneotarsonemus concavuscutum (Tarsonemidae): A mite inhabiting the perianth of coconut fruits

    No full text
Steneotarsonemus concavuscutum lives under the perianth of coconut fruits and causes necrosis, deformation, resinous lesions, and fruit abortion. Its colony develops in a shelter under the floral bracts of the fruits, which provides protection against biotic (e.g., predation) and abiotic factors (e.g., high temperature and humidity variations and influences from raindrops). However, these characteristics limit biological studies because the bracts prevent the observation of mites during their development. Aceria guerreronis also grows on the perianth of coconut fruits and has been reared using zygotic embryos (in vitro). In the present study, we performed the same procedure for S. concavuscutum. Different densities of S. concavuscutum were confined to zygotic embryos and evaluated after four weeks, with treatment involving A. guerreronis used for comparison. Steneotarsonemus concavuscutum did not develop appropriately on the zygotic embryos, unlike A. guerreronis. Subsequently, the biological aspects of S. concavuscutum were investigated by isolating the mites in arenas made from the perianth fragments of various coconut fruit varieties. An additional treatment was carried out with S. furcatus, another tarsonemid species inhabiting the perianth of fruits. The Steneotarsonemus species completed their development in arenas made of perianth fragments. A difference in developmental time betwee n sexes was observed only in S. furcatus, while no difference was detected for either Steneotarsonemus species across different varieties. Steneotarsonemus concavuscutum exhibited a longer developmental time than S. furcatus, but neither species reproduced on perianth fragments.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Pernambuco Science and Technology Support Foundation (FACEPE)Univ Fed Rural Pernambuco, Dept Agron Entomol, Rua Dom Manoel de Medeiros, BR-52171900 Recife, PE, BrazilUniv Fed Rural Pernambuco, Dept Biol, Rua Dom Manoel de Medeiros, BR-52171270 Recife, PE, BrazilEmbrapa Tabuleiros Costeiros, Ave Governador Paulo Barreto de Menezes 3250, BR-49025040 Aracaju, SE, BrazilUniv Estadual Paulista, Dept Ciencias Biol, Rua Cristovao Colombo, BR-15054000 Sao Jose Do Rio Preto, SP, BrazilUniv Estadual Paulista, Dept Ciencias Biol, Rua Cristovao Colombo, BR-15054000 Sao Jose Do Rio Preto, SP, BrazilCNPq: 306092/2021-

Lack of accuracy of force platform in predicting falls in older adults

    No full text
Background: Postural instability is related to falls in older adults. One tool for assessing postural instability is the force platform, but there is little information on its accuracy in discriminating fall risk in older adults. Objective: To determine the accuracy of the force platform in predicting falls and discriminating fallers from non-fallers older adults. Method: Was a single-arm cross-sectional study of 96 older adults aged ≥60 years, divided into fallers (single and recurrent) and non-fallers. Center of pressure (COP) sway was evaluated on a force platform under the conditions of eyes open/closed and stable/unstable surface in the variables: anteroposterior(Xavg) and mediolateral (Yavg) COP displacement; total COP displacement (path length); mediolateral(Ysd) and anteroposterior(Xsd) standard deviations of COP; mean COP velocity(Vavg); anteroposterior (Vx) and mediolateral (Vy) COP velocity; 95 % ellipse area. Comparisons between groups were made using one-way ANOVA or the Kuskal-Wallis test and the association between falls and the variables was made using logistic regression. The Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (ROC curve) was used to determine the accuracy of the force platform. Results: Significant difference was found for path length, Vavg, Vx and Xsd and Vavg, showing that recurrent fallers had greater COP oscillation. There was an association between area, Xsd and Ysd (single fallers) and Xavg (recurrent fallers). The ROC curve showed no accuracy in predicting falls. Conclusions: The force platform was able to distinguish non-fallers from recurrent fallers in some situations and balance variables. Despite this, the study did not find reasonable accuracy of the instrument in predicting falls.Taneja College of Pharmacy, University of South FloridaAtlantic PhilanthropiesGraduate Program in Human Development and Technology Bioscience Institute São Paulo State University, 1515 24A Avenue, São PauloDepartment of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy São Paulo State University, Marília, São Paulo, 737 Hygino Muzzi Filho Avenue, São PauloGraduate Program in Human Development and Technology Bioscience Institute São Paulo State University, 1515 24A Avenue, São PauloDepartment of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy São Paulo State University, Marília, São Paulo, 737 Hygino Muzzi Filho Avenue, São Paul

    No full text
The objective of the present study was to analyze the effects of chitosan (CS)-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) acting as carriers of chlorhexidine (CHX) on a microcosm biofilm model of oral candidiasis. A combination of saliva from three healthy donors was used to form salivary microcosm biofilms, to which two fungal species (Candida albicans and Candida glabrata) were added to reproduce an oral candidiasis microcosm. The polymicrobial biofilms were grown for 72 hours on glass discs using an active adhesion model. Salivary microcosm biofilms without Candida spp. were also cultivated and served as a control model. Next, the nanocarrier loaded with CHX at 78 (IONPs-CS-CHX78) or 156 µg/mL (IONPs-CS-CHX156) was placed in contact with the biofilms for 24 hours. Controls included isolated IONPs, CS, and CHX, in addition to an untreated group (NC). Semi-quantitative and quantitative assays for biomass production, metabolism, bacterial and fungal load, and lactic acid production were conducted to assess antibiofilm effects. Biofilm structure, viability, and thickness were also examined by confocal microscopy. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis, followed by the Student-Newman-Keuls post hoc test (p < 0.05). CHX and IONPs-CS-CHX156 did not differ from each other and were the most effective active agents against all tested biofilm models, significantly reducing metabolism, microbial load (bacterial and fungal), and viability. Specifically for the oral candidiasis biofilm, the nanocarrier did not affect biomass or biofilm thickness but led to a significant increase in lactic acid levels compared to NC. It is concluded that the nanocarrier of CHX exhibits a significant reducing effect on oral candidiasis microcosm biofilms at half the concentration required for non-carried CHX, depending on the evaluated variable. This nanostructure can be explored in the development of antiseptic or disinfectant solutions for managing oral candidiasis.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)CAPES: 00

Respiratory rate–oxygenation index and National Early Warning Score 2 score are associated with orotracheal intubation in patients with cardiogenic pulmonary oedema

    No full text
Background: This study evaluates the association between the respiratory rate–oxygenation (ROX) index and the National Early Warning Score 2 (NEWS2) score with orotracheal intubation (OTI) and in-hospital mortality in patients with cardiogenic pulmonary oedema (CPE). Methods: This retrospective observational study enrolled patients aged 18 years or older who had developed CPE at admission or during hospital stay. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected within the first 24 h of CPE onset from the electronic records. The outcomes needed for OTI during 24 h after CPE diagnosis and in-hospital mortality were also collected. The ROX index and NEWS2 were calculated using variables collected at CPE occurrence. Results: Two hundred eighty-six patients with CPE were evaluated; however, 68 patients were excluded due to the absence of variables to calculate the ROX index. Thus, we included 218 patients in the analysis. The mean age was 67.8 ± 14.0 years, 51.8% were female, the median of the ROX index was 9.29 (6.06–13.05), and the median of the NEWS2 was 10.0 (7.0–12.0). Amongst these patients, 28.0% needed OTI 24 h after CPE and 30.3% died. In univariate analysis, lower values of the ROX index and higher values of the NEWS2 were associated with OTI. There was no association with mortality. In logistic regression models, the ROX index and NEWS2 were associated with OTI when adjusted by smoking, time of CPE, and endovenous nitrate and morphine (ROX index: odds ratio [OR] = 0.908, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.843–0.979, p = 0.012; NEWS2: OR = 1.261, 95% CI = 1.049–1.514, p = 0.013) and when adjusted by age, sex, and time of CPE (at admission or during hospital stay; ROX index: OR = 0.909, 95% CI = 0.847–0.976, p = 0.008; NEWS2: OR = 1.190, 95% CI = 1.015–1.396, p = 0.032). Conclusions: The ROX index and NEWS2 were associated with OTI in CPE despite no association with mortality.Department of Internal Medicine Botucatu Medical School UNESP – Univ Estadual PaulistaDepartment of Internal Medicine Botucatu Medical School UNESP – Univ Estadual Paulist

Até o presente momento, o paciente tem respondido positivamente à quimioterapia instituída, apresentando uma sobrevida superior a 127 diasLymphomas are neoplasms that arise from the malignant clonal expansion of lymphocytes. They can originate in primary and secondary lymphoid organs, but due to the continuous migration of lymphocytes throughout the body, any tissue can become the initial focus of this neoplasm. Because it affects several organ systems, lymphoma does not present a single, standard symptomatology, but rather a set of varied clinical signs. Cardiac lymphoma is defined by the infiltration of malignant lymphocytes in the myocardium, epicardium and pericardium. Its incidence among cardiac neoplasms is low. There are few reports on this form of presentation and no reports on cardiac lymphoma with progression to the integument. In veterinary medicine, there are few reports on the response to treatment and survival time of this cardiac neoplasm. Therefore, the objective of this study is to report the clinical case of a dog with primary cardiac lymphoma associated with subsequent cutaneous progression, diagnosed through cytological analysis of the pericardial effusion. To date, the patient has responded positively to the chemotherapy instituted, surviving for more than 127 day

Product development for accessibility: the relationship between different design approaches, real user participation and apparent usability levels

One way to provide accessibility for People with Disabilities (PwD) or Reduced Mobility (RM) is to develop Assistive Technology (AT) devices. Knowing and understanding the user for whom one is designing is one of the premises for a successful project, and there is no better way to get to know the user than to consult them directly. In this sense, it is known that Design acts through project approaches in the development of AT devices. However, it is observed in the literature that the use of these approaches is not always done, or in some cases is not mentioned, especially in areas such as engineering and health. Likewise, recent studies show that the inclusion of the real user in projects is often not treated as a priority. Based on this, the research in question aims to evaluate the influence that the different design approaches used to develop products for PwD or RM, as well as the participation of the real user, have on the degrees of apparent usability, from the point of view of different professionals working in the area. The main hypothesis of this study (H1) is that the use of a design approach or methodology and the inclusion of real users during the development of a product for PwD or RM provide more positive results regarding efficiency and satisfaction. Regarding the technical procedures, this research was divided into four phases: Phase 1 – Theoretical Foundation, Phase 2 – Information Collection, Phase 3 – Design Activity and Phase 4 – Usability Assessment. In Phase 1, bibliographic research was carried out on the following topics: Design and Assistive Technology; Design Approaches; and Usability in Product Design. In Phase 2, a questionnaire was applied to authors of 77 articles selected through an Sistematic Review, and 44 responses were obtained. In Phase 3, students developed products under different guidelines, which resulted in nine different products. Finally, in Phase 4, the products were evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively by a group of 30 experts. These data were interpreted through statistical analysis, and thus the cases in which there was a significant difference (p<0.05) were identified. The results of this research show that the use of design approaches resulted in products with positive, comparable performances and within the general average. In addition, it was found that the greater the interaction between the real user and the design team during the development of accessibility products, the better the results will be in relation to the usability of the products. In this sense, it was possible to show that interviews with the user resulted in superior products than those that used personas. In addition, the main design approaches and methodologies currently used in the area were highlighted, as well as the opinion of professionals in the area regarding the relevance of using these procedures in the context of accessibility design. Finally, based on the results achieved, it is expected that the contributions of this research will be absorbed by professionals who develop projects focused on accessibility, so that individuals who require these resources have access to solutions that truly correspond to their needs

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized as a human development disorder, the cause and treatment of which are still under constant investigation. Considering that children with ASD have a significant preference for visual stimuli, the use of mobile games by this group is increasing. Therefore, the use of mobile digital games is beginning to be incorporated as complementary artifacts in the educational and socialization process of children with ASD. However, there are still many studies that investigate this relationship, and research in the area of design, which explores the construction and composition of interfaces and their applied visual language, is still incipient. In addition, there are few game development projects that include the participation of children themselves in their design, even if they are the end user. Therefore, the main objective of this work is to propose recommendations, based on inclusive graphic design concepts, for the design of the visual interface of mobile educational games for children with ASD. To this end, participatory methodologies were applied in two APAEs (Association of Parents and Friends of the Exceptional) in different cities: São Luís, Maranhão and Bauru, São Paulo. In each of these institutions, a Focus Group was held with professionals responsible for treating children with ASD, with a total of 15 participants from different areas of knowledge. In the same APAEs, the COSPATIAL Method, proposed by Millen, Cobb and Patel (2011), was applied, characterized by the participation of children with ASD in the process of designing a game, expressing their ideas and preferences. Transcriando a lua à luz concreta: traduzindo “!/o(rounD)moon,how”, de E. E. Cummings

This article will present two translation proposals for “!/o(rounD)moon,how” by E. E. Cummings (1894–1962). Included in the book 95 Poems (1958), the poem is no less experimental than the other components of the work, with the author’s manipulation of language and use of white space on the page being indispensable aspects to be recovered in translations of the title. Taking into account the theories of the Campos brothers and Pignatari, who promote a translational project linked to creation and critical exercise, as well as the translations of the younger Paulista poet, Augusto de Campos, of Cummings’ work, the objective is to transcreate the miniature above mentioned to English, recovering some meanings from it and proposing others, as far it is authorized within the poem. Establishing a connection with Literary Theory, the sense effects constructed in these transcreations will be closely analyzed. The analytical procedure should highlight features of the Cummingsian work condensed in “!/o(rounD)moon,how”, offering research in the area of translation of a version of a poem not yet rendered into Brazilian Portuguese.Universidade Estadual Paulista AraraquaraUniversidade Estadual Paulista Araraquar
