Examining the Relationship between Amphetamine-Type Substances and Aggression
Amphetamine-type substances (ATS) have long been reported to increase anger and aggression-related behaviours in the anecdotal literature. This thesis explores whether a causal ATS-aggression relationship exists by examining how acute ATS doses influence mood and performance under controlled laboratory conditions in humans. Through a systematic review of existing acute dosing studies, and experimental trials, the collation of evidence revealed a lack of support for an ATS-aggression causal relationship. Strong statements drawing a direct or causal link between methamphetamine/amphetamine ingestion and aggressive or violent behaviour cause unnecessary concern, contribute to stigma, and should at minimum be tempered while research continues.</p

How does organisational culture affect agile projects? A competing values framework perspective
Purpose
The literature has not yet delved sufficiently deeper into the holistic relationship between organisational culture and agile project management. This paper aims to address this literature gap by delineating the specifics of why and how organisational culture affects agile project management.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper addresses this literature gap by conducting a systematic literature review of empirical research investigating how organisational culture affects agile project management. This paper draws on the competing values framework to explain how various dimensions of organisational culture influence the technical and social streams of agile project management.
Findings
The findings underscored the detrimental effects of hierarchical culture, characterised by rigid organisational structures, formal communication with management and resistance to change acceptance, on both the technical and social aspects of agile projects. In contrast, the positive impact of group culture on the social aspect was evident through employee empowerment and teamwork. Moreover, the rational culture dimension demonstrated favourable effects on both streams, emphasising market knowledge, financial development and business opportunities. Finally, the developmental culture dimension supported customer collaboration, knowledge sharing and innovation.
Originality/value
The focus on the “mutability” of organisational culture has led to four research propositions delineating specific ways of cultivating organisational culture to be more conducive to agile projects, marking a first in the academic literature.</p
Towards a discrete time crystal using ultracold atoms
This thesis provides a detailed account of the construction of an apparatus to create and experimentally investigate a new state of matter known as a time crystal. Time crystals are a quantum physics phenomenon that can emerge in driven many-body systems where the system reorganizes its motion with a period longer than that of the driving force. These systems have the potential to reveal novel condensed matter phenomena in the time domain. Practical applications of time crystals could include advancements in quantum information processing, highly sensitive magnetic sensors and atomic clocks.</p
Motorized Two-wheeler Rider Behavior Analysis through Experimental and Naturalistic Riding Studies
This research investigated motorised two-wheeler riders' behaviour in expected and unexpected pedestrian crossings. Riders' kinematic data was analysed and modelled using analysis of variance and mixed effects modelling techniques. Results showed significantly aggressive braking with loss of control in unexpected pedestrian crossings, indicating the need for hazard perception training and advanced rider assistance systems. Riders' behaviour in normal day-to-day driving conditions was also studied in a city in India. K-means clustering technique was used and results indicated three driving behaviours with varying aggressiveness levels. The developed methodology helps in identifying risky driving and framing regulations to discourage such behaviour.</p
Exploring standard candle systematics across the rungs of the astronomical distance ladder
This thesis investigates the Hubble tension, a significant discrepancy between various measurements of the current expansion rate of the Universe. To achieve this, it focuses on the rungs of the astronomical distance ladder, particularly the use of the Tip of the Red Giant Branch and Type Ia Supernovae as distance indicators. Through the development of novel methodologies, analysing data from large-scale surveys and galaxy observations, the main findings will inform the objectives and analyses of next-generation surveys, further reshaping our understanding of the Universe.</p
Innovation of Quick Concrete Mix Processes for 3D Printing
The rheological contradiction between buildability and pumpability poses significant challenges in 3D Concrete Printing. This doctoral thesis innovates Quick Nozzle Mixing Technology as an alternative solution to these challenges. It comprehensively investigates the effects of raw materials and mixture proportions on concrete mixing efficiency (i.e., mixing duration and energy consumption). This innovation, the first of its kind, allows for direct production of fresh concrete from dry raw materials in the nozzle and achieves printing without the need for pumping. The success of this technology is expected to promote the automated process of 3D concrete printing, paving the way for more efficient construction methods.</p
Dynamics Analysis and Parameter Identification for Industrial Robotic Manipulators
This thesis focuses on developing a systematic scheme for estimating all manipulator dynamic quantities with superior performance compared to conventional methods. System properties in the frequency domain are further explored. Only the joint position measurement is required to estimate all parameters and system states including joint velocity and acceleration. The proposed method is designed for a broad class of manipulators which means it can be applied to various kinds of industrial applications
Unearthing Fast Radio Bursts using Machine Learning
The thesis enhanced our understanding of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) by optimizing the detection efficiency of multi-beam radio interferometers. FRBs are impulsive radio signals visible to cosmological distances. The study developed a novel, machine-learning based, spatially-aware classification system for live FRB detections. It was implemented on the UTMOST-NS radio telescope in Australia. A very bright FRB with very high time, frequency and polarisation information was detected, a first for the facility. The method could be implemented at other telescopes to improve detection rates, crucial for resolving key questions about FRB populations and their progenitors
