    Something in the Air: A Phenomenology of Videogame Atmosphere

    This dissertation presents a theorisation of videogame atmosphere from a phenomenological perspective. Atmosphere and atmospheric attunements are taken to be fundamental phenomena which come before any other type of 'immersion' into gameworlds. The dissertation explains how atmospheres are liminal phenomena originating between subjects and objects. By considering atmosphere, we are able to explain what enables different states of immersion such as kinaesthetic, spatial, empathic, rhetorical immersion, as well as immersion into different genres. This dissertation therefore enables for a deeper understanding of debates on immersiveness and provides a useful resource for designers interested in creating atmospheric games

    Millimetre Wave Absorption by the Cornea

    This dissertation introduces a computational phantom employing the Finite-Difference Time-Domain technique to investigate the interaction of non-ionizing radiation, specifically millimetre waves and terahertz frequency electromagnetic radiation, with the human cornea. It integrates experimental findings from the Australian Synchrotron. The goal was to contribute to radiation safety standards amid the rapid evolution of 5G technology and the potential advent of 6G and beyond. The model replicates the human eyeball realistically and explores various exposure scenarios, including the impact of eyelashes on electric field distribution when exposed to radiation sources ranging from 20-100 Gigahertz while considering pathological conditions such as dry eyes

    Intelligent Cloud Decision Support for Legacy Application Migration on Diverse Application Architectures

    The research aims to provide decision support to cloud adopters with their workload placement decisions. The key differentiating feature of the research is the data-driven guidance by using Case Based Reasoning (CBR) and Rule-Based Reasoning (RBR). The main advantage of CBR is that it can leverage the technical expertise of Telstra Cloud consultants that has been captured in previous cloud migration projects while RBR leverages expert knowledge to specify business rules that provide a cloud platform recommendation. The recommendation can then be used to guide future cloud migration decisions even in the presence of incomplete information

    Antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of Sarawak stingless bee honey against Pseudomonas aeruginosa

    Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a tough bacterium to treat because it's very resistant to antibiotics and forms protective layers called biofilms. One promising alternative to antibiotics is Sarawak stingless bee honey. This honey, like the well-known manuka honey, can kill bacteria and break down biofilms. In this study, 14 types of Sarawak stingless bee honey were tested and found to be effective at low concentrations. They prevented 80% of biofilm formation and broke down existing biofilms by 41%. This study improved knowledge on Sarawak stingless bee honey and its use as a natural treatment against P. aeruginosa

    An exploratory study of the sustainability practices of multinational enterprises in Malaysia

    This thesis examines how companies operating in Malaysia are engaging with sustainable development within their business activities and operation. The findings are presented through four published academic papers, each addressing different aspects of the topic. The first paper establishes a conceptual framework for corporate sustainability assessment, drawing from a systematic literature review and synthesising previous theoretical and empirical studies. This framework serves as a basis to examine the actual management practices adopted by multinational companies in Malaysia when addressing sustainable development. The second paper presents a case study, focusing on a multinational company in the ICT sector. The third paper explores the corporate sustainability practices of a Malaysian bank, operating across South East Asia. Lastly, the fourth paper examines the corporate sustainability practices of a multinational insurance company headquartered in Europe and operating in Malaysia. Through these papers, the thesis provides foundational knowledge on three key aspects of corporate sustainability, supported by empirical examination that span different in different industries

    Indoor radiative cooling for on-chip devices

    This thesis introduces the theory of indoor radiative cooling and prove the feasibility of radiative cooling technology indoor application by the simulated and experimental results. The designed microstructure polymer-based radiative cooling film can achieve 237 W/m2 cooling power and 2.67℃ temperature reduction. This thesis provides research motivation and initial theoretical support for future indoor cooling radiation.</p

    Choice and Control: A study on Workplace Challenges in National Disability Support Services in Australia

    This study investigates the challenges faced by service providers in achieving `Choice and Control' for participants in Australia's National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). It reveals that choice-making is hindered by theoretical, practical, and organisational issues. This qualitative research, conducted in two stages, interviews and Delphi method, identifies key challenges such as lack of understanding of client's perspectives by the work teams, clients' knowledge limitation about the funding, insufficient support workers, and communication issues. The study has significant theoretical and practical implications. The findings align with the components of self-determination theory: autonomy, competence, and relatedness.</p

    Spatial Isotropy Analysis of Generalised Rotation-Symmetric Gough-Stewart platforms

    As the traditional Stewart platform can't achieve spatially isotropy, this thesis first derives several novel spatially isotropic variants with three horizontal links based on the traditional Stewart platform by analysing the Cartesian stiffness matrix. Due to the effective workspace of the Stewart platform is affected by several factors, this thesis proposes a methodology which can clearly demonstrate the constant-position and constant-orientation workspaces and determine combinations of the free parameters to achieve the largest collision-free and singularity-free workspace. Finally, in order to evaluate the deviation from spatial isotropy, three novel methods for evaluating the deviation from stiffness isotropy are proposed

    Digital earth observation-based solution to improve monitoring and management actions for coastal water quality

    To address the aims of improving the coastal water monitoring strategies in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, this thesis successfully demonstrated the application of digital earth-observation based approaches, which enables rapid detection of water quality changes over space and time. This outcome was made possible with the development of regional remote sensing model and applied onto time-series ocean colour satellite imageries for analysis. Ultimately, this thesis highlighted the impact and value of digital-based methods, in support of the Sustainable Development Goal 14 - Life Below Water, to provide rapid and informed-based decisions for the better management of the coastal ecosystem
