    Formal Thought Disorder (FTD) is a prominent symptom of psychosis, characterised by unusual speech patterns and communication issues, observed in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression. Despite its significance, FTD remains poorly understood. This research used mixed methods to investigate how to define, measure and treat FTD, as well as understand its impact on functioning. Findings emphasised the need for a standardised approach to classifying and measuring FTD before targeted treatment models can be developed. Achieving this will ultimately improve clinical care and quality of life for individuals affected

    The research revealed that students in English as a foreign language in Indonesia perceived themselves as society members, English as a foreign language learners and creative writers. Students' identities were utilised as creative writing resources for self-expression, blending the Indonesian and English cultures and emotional channels. Through their creative writing, students accepted and rejected the identities ascribed by others. Moreover, their creative writing allowed students to claim and confirm their identities while abiding to the societal expectations towards them. As such, students were empowered and could develop positive learning attitudes. Thus, creative writing practices could be used promote students' identity formation

The main emphasis of the thesis is to use this method in evaluating the accuracy and precision of the two fundamental, yet hardest to measure, quantities: masses and distances of galaxies. These measurements heavily rely on our assumptions about how the Universe works, therefore, this study contributes to our greater understanding of the Universe by providing new techniques to rigorously test these assumptions and the physics behind them

    This thesis conducted a comprehensive study on laser directed energy deposition of AISI 316L. Several key issues in laser directed energy deposition process were delicately studied, including oxidation, deposition efficiency, microstructural evolution, quasi-static and dynamic mechanical properties of the deposited materials, and digital twinning for additive manufacturing. This thesis focuses on frontier technologies in the field and contributes original knowledge to the pool of additive manufacturing. The research content and results obtained in this thesis advances the theoretical understanding of additive manufacturing technology for 316 stainless steel and provides significant guidance for its practical applications

    Changing the Script: Language and Nation Building in Post-Soviet Azerbaijan

    This study examines the language policy of independent Azerbaijan in relation to national identity. Azerbaijan is an independent multi-ethnic republic and has implemented its own language policy since 1991. As a result, a unique Latin alphabet was adopted, shifting away from Cyrillic. This thesis contributes to Soviet/post-Soviet language studies, specifically the study of the links between language policies and nationality. This research revealed that after the new language regulations were enacted in the early 1990s, Azerbaijan experienced different phases of nation-building. Unlike other post-Soviet states, the de-Russification process could go further in Azerbaijan, due to the successful introduction of the Latin alphabet

The thesis also proposes an efficient authentication method for virtual reality environments, and critically analyzes the vulnerabilities of Photoplethysmography-based systems, especially against remote Photoplethysmography attacks. This thesis analyses a contested science prioritisation change at the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation, which is part of the public sector. The study’s purpose is to investigate the media’s ability to affect organisational change outcomes and to provide learnings and insights about the management of change. The research shows the importance of engaging external stakeholders early; the need to consider the interest and values of the media; and the importance of alignment between the type of change being made, and the method used to manage the change

    This research investigated the impact of touchscreen and other digital media on young children's play, learning, and development. Utilising systematic and narrative literature reviews alongside empirical studies, it examined whether children could acquire knowledge via screen-based media and assessed the implications for social interactions, play, and overall well-being. Findings indicated positive educational outcomes from touchscreen use and nuanced effects on parent-child interactions. This research highlighted the importance of a multifaceted approach integrating developmental psychology, learning theories, and public health to optimise children’s digital media use and offers critical insights for educators and caregivers for enhancing developmental outcomes in the digital age
