The effects of contextual bias on face recognition decisions
Contemporary research has demonstrated the effects of bias on, even expert, forensic decision making. The paper aimed to test if forensically relevant face recognition decisions could be influenced by biasing information. A 3 (Bias (within‐subjects): positive bias vs. negative bias vs. control) × 2 (evidence strength (between‐subjects): weak video evidence (N = 97) vs. strong video evidence (N = 98)) × 2 (target presence (within‐subjects): absent vs. present) mixed‐design was utilized. Confidence, accuracy, and decision time were measured. In total, 195 participants were recruited. The Cambridge face memory test+ was used to measure face recognition ability. Participants saw 36 videos emulating Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage of a person walking down the corridor. Participants were randomly allocated to either the strong or weak evidence condition. Participants were shown a statement for each video that contained either a positive bias (target face matched the face in the video), a negative bias (target face did not match the face in the video), or control (no statement provided). Participants were then presented with a target face and asked if it matched the face seen in the previous video. There was a significant interaction between the bias and the target presence factors, with accuracy and confidence increasing and decision times decreasing when a positive bias statement was used when the target was present. Face recognition abilities did not act as a covariate. Bias may influence facial recognition decisions, and superior face recognition abilities do not undermine the influence of bias. From Policy to Practice: Embedding Entrepreneurial Thinking Through an Institutional Entrepreneurial Toolkit
In response to the Scottish Government’s Entrepreneurial Campus Blueprint (2023), this paper presents the development and piloting of an institutional Entrepreneurial Toolkit aimed at embedding entrepreneurial mindset and practice across the tertiary education landscape. Using a critical realist methodology, we examine how change occurs through generative mechanisms, practitioner agency, and collaborative processes.The Entrepreneurial Toolkit is an institutional mechanism and strategic framework for embedding entrepreneurial mindsets and features two components. The Playbook is a digital guide combining theory and practice, which outlines principles, pedagogy, and case-based examples; and the Playboxes are physical, sensory, and multimodal learning resources designed to activate engagement and support inclusive, experiential learning across disciplines. Together, these components serve to operationalise entrepreneurial education at both strategic and delivery levels.Developed through iterative cycles of practitioner engagement, reflective learning, active learning practice, and strategic alignment with frameworks such as EntreComp (European Commission, 2016) and Advance HE (2024) guidance, the Toolkit supports the formation of entrepreneurial mindsets in both staff and students. The paper discusses the importance of agency, trust, and emergence in facilitating change, as well as the role of prior collaboration and institutional context.This paper identifies the importance of institutional culture, staff trust, and shared ownership in supporting adoption. Our findings suggest that open, flexible tools embedded within an enabling infrastructure can serve as catalysts for curriculum and cultural transformation. The Toolkit enables curricular enhancement and innovation and contributes to wider policy objectives around graduate pathways and entrepreneurial learning. We conclude with recommendations for practice and areas for future research, particularly highlighting the need to measure longitudinal impact

#Clothbummums: How green engagement with cloth nappies influences consumer well-being
This study demonstrates how consumers’ green engagement with a functional, sustainable product (cloth nappies/diapers) directly enhances their subjective well-being while reducing carbon emissions. We conducted two qualitative studies with 27 cloth nappy users and thematically coded visual diaries and focus group data on NVivo. The study offers distinct insights into customer engagement, sustainable post-adoption behaviors, and subjective well-being through a novel theoretical framework comprising three distinct but overlapping layers: the aesthetic trap, the burden–reward paradox, and the well-being cycle. Product ownership and the fashion value of displaying a green product boost consumers’ subjective well-being, and parents’ self-perception is enhanced when the tasks associated with sustainable product usage are rewarding. The well-being cycle of sustainable engagement emphasizes how subjective well-being and identity transformation are dynamic and sustain long-term engagement. Managerial recommendations include increasing desirability of the sustainable product and emphasizing individual benefits by enhancing the visibility of product usage systems

Composted: A Festival of Biodegradable Ideas
Collaboration with Cambo Garden in May 2025 funded by Napier University & Fife Climate Action Network.Witnessing visitors arriving in their droves to Cambo Garden’s Snowdrop Festival, inspired head Gardener Cal Halstead and myself to pitch to Cambo’s board of trustees a similar festival-approach, but with the focus being composting. My collaboration with the Head Gardener was intentionally blurred with Cal sometimes assuming the role of a graphic designer come art director and conversely, me the job of the gardener. The first task involved the design and build of a compost trail with nine exhibition points, demonstrating different forms of composting. From passive examples such as habitat piles and standing dead wood to more hands-on methods such as leaf mould heaps or wooden-pallet-bay-systems. To guide visitors around this exhibition, we designed a compostable poster-map made from recycled agricultural waste (which included an instruction manual on how to build a compost cake, plus compostable interpretation for each exhibition point providing information on each approach.Throughout the six-week festival we ran different practical workshops that covered how to construct a Compost Cake, learn about no-dig growing and understanding how to balance green to brown ratios to make your compost heap (or bin) as efficient as possible. I personally orchestrated creative workshops for families in which participants could make compostable anthrotypes using beetroot juice, sunlight and compostable materials. As well as facilitating an ideation session where community action groups (Greener Kirkaldy, Climate Action Fife, Eats Rosyth) were invited to work together to think up new innovative ways to get people composting in their own spaces. Part of reaching out to communities, was supplying V&A Dundee compost made during the festival for their planted borders to coincide with the recently opened Garden Futures exhibition.The festival culminated with a conference day, where we had informative and emotive talks from both Compost Club’s Michael Kennard and industrial turned organic farmers Steading & Co, about their own life changing experiences with composting. Finishing the day with a tour of the composting trail, a facilitated discussion circle about the future of composting and an evening of drinks around a campfire right next to the heaps
The pre-implementation process of the continuity of midwifery care research strategy: An implementation science methodologically guided initiative
In 2017, the continuity of midwifery care model was introduced as the way forward in Scottish maternity and neonatal services. There is no shared research strategy aligning research needs with an agenda, setting goals and revising plans. In this paper, we outline the systematic multi-actor and integrated knowledge translation process that frames and informs our initiative to develop a continuity of midwifery care research strategy, focusing on establishing a comprehensive mission, vision, and research topics. Guided by the pre-implementation process as part of the implementation science methodology, we engaged with a Scottish group of stakeholders, including service providers, academics, managers/policymakers, service users’ advocates and midwifery students during targeted activities to contribute to a widely held perspective. We collected data using an online poll, subgroup brainstorming sessions, plenary group discussions, evaluation and video recording to frame and inform the research mission, vision and study topics. Data collection tools included word clouds, brainstorming sheets, observation notes, ranking, evaluation forms and recording transcripts. The outcomes of a stepwise analytic approach of mapping, synthesising, and using the data to develop a continuity of midwifery care research direction and focus will inform future funding applications, studies and projects. The pre-implementation process and actions described in this paper can serve as an example of structuring comprehensive research strategies in other settings, cultures, domains or contexts
Municipal solid waste dynamics: Economic, environmental, and technological determinants in Europe
This study examines the factors driving municipal solid waste generation in 33 European countries from 1995 to 2021. Using the STIRPAT model, the research assesses the influence of economic and environmental variables on municipal solid waste generation, analyzing data on Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Research and Development expenditure, tourism, trade volume, renewable energy adoption, and service sector growth. To count for cross-sectional dependence in the data, the study employs Driscoll Kraay Standard Error and performs quantile regression as a robustness test to capture variations across different levels of municipal solid waste generation. The findings reveal a positive relationship between GDP, the service sector, and municipal waste, indicating that economic growth and expansion in European countries increase waste. Conversely, tourism, trade, and renewable energy adoption negatively correlate with municipal waste, suggesting these factors can reduce waste. The study offers policy recommendations for European policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders to develop effective and sustainable waste management strategies, contributing to Europe's broader goal of environmental sustainability
