    Can tree leaves be used as an alternative source of synthetic antioxidants? Use of jujube leaf extract in laying hens

    This study was carried out to determine the antioxidant activity of jujube (Zizyphus jujuba Mill.) leaf extract (JLE) and to evaluate the effects of its use as an extract in laying hen diet (Nick Brown; 32 weeks old) on performance, egg quality and lipid peroxidation. A total of 4 groups (24 replicates/group), one control (JLE-0) and three experimental groups (JLE-1, JLE-2, JLE-3), were formed and the hens were individually distributed in cages. The groups were fed with 0, 45, 90 and 135 mg/kg extract, respectively. The total phenolic content of the extract was 118.60 g gallic acid aquivalent/kg (GAE/kg) and the IC50 value was determined as 332.01 as a result of the DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity assay. Performance parameters except for feed conversion ratio (FCR) were not affected by the extract in the diet. Compared to the control group, FCR decreased (p < 0.05) and feed conversion improved in all experimental groups. The linear effect was significant for egg production (EP) (p < 0.05). Furthermore, egg quality parameters except for the albumen index (AI), Haugh unit (HU), shell weight (SW), and shell thickness (ST) were not affected by the extract in the diet. The highest AI and HU were in the JLE-2 group (p < 0.05). Besides, SW was found to increase in all experimental groups (p < 0.001). The highest ST was in JLE-1 (p < 0.001). The addition of the extract was found to slow down lipid oxidation by decreasing Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive substances (TBARs) levels on days 0 and 28 (p < 0.05).     Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method with non-homogeneous cells filled with voxels

    With the objective of reducing the overall number of FDTD cells in applications where the objects of interest are given as sets of voxels, as in bio-electromagnetism, a subcell technique is introduced to allow the FDTD method to account for non-homogeneous cells composed with voxels of different permittivity's.     In-Domain Transfer Learning Strategy for Tumor Detection on Brain MRI

    Transfer learning has gained importance in areas where there is a labeled data shortage. However, it is still controversial as to what extent natural image datasets as pre-training sources contribute scientifically to success in different fields, such as medical imaging. In this study, the effect of transfer learning for medical object detection was quantitatively compared using natural and medical image datasets. Within the scope of this study, transfer learning strategies based on five different weight initialization methods were discussed. A natural image dataset MS COCO and brain tumor dataset BraTS 2020 were used as the transfer learning source, and Gazi Brains 2020 was used for the target. Mask R-CNN was adopted as a deep learning architecture for its capability to effectively handle both object detection and segmentation tasks. The experimental results show that transfer learning from the medical image dataset was found to be 10% more successful and showed 24% better convergence performance than the MS COCO pre-trained model, although it contains fewer data. While the effect of data augmentation on the natural image pre-trained model was 5%, the same domain pre-trained model was measured as 2%. According to the most widely used object detection metric, transfer learning strategies using MS COCO weights and random weights showed the same object detection performance as data augmentation. The performance of the most effective strategies identified in the Mask R-CNN model was also tested with YOLOv8. Results showed that even if the amount of data is less than the natural dataset, in-domain transfer learning is more efficient than cross-domain transfer learning. Moreover, this study demonstrates the first use of the Gazi Brains 2020 dataset, which was generated to address the lack of labeled and qualified brain MRI data in the medical field for in-domain transfer learning. Thus, knowledge transfer was carried out from the deep neural network, which was trained with brain tumor data and tested on a different brain tumor dataset

    In this research, it is aimed to examine the contribution of Social Studies course in terms of social integration of students living as an asylum seeker in Turkey and continuing their education in schools in Turkey, according to student opinions. The research was carried out with the qualitative research method and the research participants were determined by the criterion sampling method, which is one of the purposeful sampling methods. Data were obtained from the participants with a semi-structured interview form and content analysis technique was used to analyze these data. According to the results of the research, the Social Studies course; has made significant contributions to to asylum seeker students in learning the Turkish language, using it effectively and improving their Turkish; It is seen that it teaches the Turkish lifestyle and behavior patterns, customs and traditions, customs and traditions, and more generally Turkish culture. Asylum seeker students have some problems in Turkey, but the Social Studies course is guiding in solving these problems; It has been concluded that some factors such as the way of teaching Social Studies course teachers, the attitudes and behaviors of teachers, the content of the Social Studies textbook and the process of teaching this course contribute significantly to the integration of asylum seeker students into Turkish society. © (2023), (T.C.     Determination of Supplier Selection For 1-Phase Induction Motor Used in Hoods by Fuzzy TOPSIS Method

    Hoods are the most important devices used in our kitchens that contribute to the ventilation of the environment. 95% of the electric motors used in hoods are single-phase asynchronous motors. There are many domestic and foreign electric motor manufacturers producing for the hood industry. Supplier selection in companies producing hoods is vital and critical for sustainable production. It is extremely important to make the right decision in the purchasing process of the supplied products. While the decisions taken can sometimes be clearly separated from each other, sometimes they can be intertwined and interconnected. Multi criteria decision making techniques are used when making decisions that cannot be clearly separated or explained with numerical data. The aim of this study was to determine the most suitable Supplier for the built-in appliance company operating in the Turkiye/Amasya region by using fuzzyTOPSIS method in the supply of 1-phase asynchronous motors used in hoods. After 5 experts working in the company were determined as decision makers, 4 criteria were determined: quality, system capacity, finance and logistics performance. The best supplier selection among 6 different suppliers was made using this method. For the first time, a solution proposal was presented with the fuzzyTOPSIS technique for the 1-phase induction motor supplier selection and a contribution was made to the literature

    Ülseratif kolit aktivitesi ve şiddetinin invaziv olmayan biyobelirteçler ile değerlendirilmesi

    Giriş ve Amaç: Bu çalışmamızda, ülseratif kolit hastalık aktivitesinin belirlenmesinde nötrofil/lenfosit oranı, platelet/lenfosit oranı, monosit/lenfosit oranı ve C-reaktif protein/albümin oranının rolünü değerlendirdik. Gereç ve Yöntem: Ülseratif kolit tanısı ile takip ettiğimiz 18 yaş üstü hastalar retrospektif olarak tarandı. Yaş, cinsiyet, komorbid hastalıklar açısından farklılığı ortadan kaldırmak için aynı hastaların endoskopik remisyon ve aktivasyon dönemlerindeki laboratuvar ve tedavi verileri karşılaştırıldı. Bulgular: Çalışma kriterlerine uygun olan 87 hasta çalışmaya alındı. Hastaların %69’u erkek, %31’i kadındı. En sık sol tip (%48.3) tutulum saptandı ve aktif dönemde median endoskopik aktivite indeksi 8’di (6-12). Endoskopik olarak aktif hastalık döneminde istatistiksel açıdan lökosit, nötrofil, monosit, trombosit, sedimentasyon, C-reaktif protein düzeyi anlamlı olarak yüksekken, hemoglobin ve albümin düzeyleri anlamlı olarak düşüktü (p < 0.05). Median platelet/lenfosit oranı [152.4 (70.1 - 422.7) ve 137.5 (36 - 1212), p = 0.009)], monosit/lenfosit oranı [(0.06 (0.01 - 1.54) ve 0.04 (0.01 – 0.9), p = 0.03], nötrofil/lenfosit oranı [2.47 (0.73 - 9.92) ve 2.08 (0.55 - 6.54), p = 0.007] ve C-reaktif protein/albümin oranının [2.3 (0.1-80) ve 0.51 (0.04 - 8.48), p < 0.001] değerleri aktif hastalık döneminde hastalığın inaktif olduğu döneme göre anlamlı olarak daha yüksek saptandı. Yapılan ROC analizde nötrofil/lenfosit oranı ve C-reaktif protein/albümin oranının endoskopik aktif hastalığı tahmin etmede yararlı olduğu, platelet/lenfosit oranı ve monosit/lenfosit oranının ise aktif hastalığı göstermede faydalı olmadığı tespit edildi. Nötrofil/lenfosit oranı için eşik değer 2.35 alındığında aktif hastalık için sensitivite %59.8, spesifite %66.7, eğri altında kalan alan 0.619 saptandı (p = 0.007). C-reaktif protein/albümin oranı için eşik değer 0.87 alındığında aktif hastalık için sensitivite %74.7, spesifite %72.4, eğri altında kalan alan 0.806 saptandı (p < 0.001). Sonuç: Ülseratif kolit hastalarında nötrofil/lenfosit oranı, platelet/lenfosit oranı, monosit/lenfosit oranı, C-reaktif protein/albümin oranı değerleri aktif hastalıkta anlamlı olarak yükselmekle birlikte, endoskopik aktif hastalığın tahmininde sadece nötrofil/lenfosit oranı ve C-reaktif protein/albümin oranı yeterli sensitivite ve spesifiteye sahiptir

    Generalized complete orthonormal sets of Exponential-Type functions

    New generalized complete orthonormal sets of psi((alpha*,mu))-exponential type functions are described and applied to LCAO calculations for the total energies of atomic systems within the framework of the minimal basis sets approximation in combined Hartree-Fock-Roothaan method. A new variational parameter mu is proposed in the complete orthonormal sets of psi((alpha*,mu))-exponential type functions where alpha* parameter changes in the range -infinity < alpha* < 3. The combined Hartree-Fock-Roothaan calculations have been performed to determine the performance of new basis sets. The comparison has been made by the use of different generalized exponential type basis sets used in the literature. The optimal values of parameters are determined by minimizing the total energies.     SUBJEKTİF TİNNİTUSLU HASTALARDA DEPRESYON, ALEKSİTİMİ VE BEDENSELLEŞTİRMENİN DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ

    Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı subjektif tinnituslu hastalarda depresyon, aleksitimi ve bedenselleştirmeyi değerlendirmek ve aralarındaki ilişkiyi araştırmaktır. Materyal ve Metod: Kulak Burun Boğaz kliniğince subjektif tinnitus tanısı konan 63 hasta ve tinnitusu olmayan 62 sağlıklı gönüllü bireye Beck Depresyon Ölçeği (BDÖ), Toronto Aleksitimi Ölçeği-20 (TAÖ-20) ve alt ölçekleri (duyguları tanımada güçlük (TAÖ-1), duygularını ifade etmede güçlük (TAÖ-2), dışa dönük düşünme (TAÖ-3) ile Bedensel Duyumları Abartma Ölçeği (BDAÖ) uygulanmıştır. Tinnitus ile depresyon, aleksitimi ve bedensel duyumları büyütme skorları arasındaki ilişki incelenmiştir. Gruplar ölçek skorları açısından karşılaştırılmıştır. Bulgular: Tinnituslu grupta BDÖ, TAÖ-20 (toplam ve tüm alt ölçekler) ve BDAÖ skorları tinnitusu olmayan gruba göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı derecede yüksek saptanmıştır (tümü p0.05). Sonuç: Bu çalışmada subjektif tinnitusun depresif belirtiler, aleksitimi ve bedenselleştirme ile ilişkili olduğu gösterilmiştir. Tinnituslu hastalar duygularını tanıma ve ifade etmede güçlük yaşadıkları için bedenselleştirme yolunu kullanıyor olabilirler. Çalışmamızda elde ettiğimiz veriler, subjektif tinnitus saptanan hastaların psikolojik yönden de değerlendirilmesinin önemini vurgulamaktadır

    Metaphorical Understanding of ELT Students toward a Master’s Degree

    This study aims to explore the opinions and metaphorical understanding of English Language Teaching students regarding pursuing a master’s degree. The participants of this cross-sectional survey study were 34 fourth-grade English Language Teaching (ELT) students from a state university in Turkey. The findings showed that most participants expressed a desire to obtain a master’s degree and provided various reasons for their willingness or unwillingness to pursue it, along with a metaphorical representation of their views. The findings also indicated that the participants had some knowledge about the requirements of a master’s degree, and although they recognized the challenges involved, they were mostly willing to pursue it. Overall, the study suggests that English Language Teaching students in Turkey have a positive attitude towards obtaining a master’s degree. However, further research is needed to examine the reasons for this positive attitude and to determine the impact of obtaining a master’s degree on the students’ competencies
