    Necked Keelback Fowlea Schnurrenbergeri (Kramer, 1977) in Northeastern Punjab, Pakistan

    The bar-necked keelback snake plays a vital ecological role as a natural pest controller, effectively regulating populations of fish, frogs, and rodents. Through their predatory behavior, they contribute significantly to maintaining ecological balance by managing the numbers of these smaller creatures, thereby contributing to the overall health of ecosystem. We have documented Fowlea schnurrenbergeri in the urban center of Tehsil Zafarwal and Dariyapur village, within Narowal district, Punjab. Previously, Sindh-Thatta represented the southeastern most known locality for this species in Pakistan.     Pedigree Analysis of Congenital Stationary Night Blindness and Surveillance of Related Problems in the Area of Depalpur, Okara-Pakistan

    Congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) is described as a set of inherited, non-progressive retinal conditions in which the rod pathway is primarily affected, resulting in difficulty adapting to low-light situations due to impaired photoreceptor transmission. Objectives of study was to identify patients with CSNB and explore their lifestyle and the impact of CSNB on their daily routines in selected areas. Total seven families having CSNB, belonging to five villages (Abadi Haji Ismaeel, Sunari wala, Tibba, Shamdin, and Chorasta Mian Khan) of Depalpur, district Okara, were investigated in March 2023. The CSNB prevalence was calculated as 2.528 % in all selected families and all of these patients were affected from their childhood. Analysis of data revealed that the lowest to highest prevalence was recorded as 1.5 to 5 % respectively. All of these patients were affected by their childhood. The CSNB patients were facing a large number of issues. Almost 99 % of the patients were under metric education. Similarly, more than 90 % of patients were jobless. They also faced marriage issues but the number of females was more than males. Day eyesight is also weak over time with ageing. Some patients feel like a burden on their families. Feel pain while watching television or using a mobile phone most of the time. The prevalence of significant refractive errors was not high enough to justify only seven families investigated solely for this purpose. However, a program may be justified in areas where CSNB is common. Further research is needed to validate the recurrent reports of the disease

    Biological Significances of Environmental Pollution in the New Calabar River, Southern Nigeria: a Case Study in Zooplankton Composition

    The study was conducted for three months (May to July 2020), focusing on the physicochemical parameters and zooplankton composition in the Ogbogoro region of the New Calabar River in Nigeria. This investigation was carried out at three distinct monitoring stations. The physicochemical parameters were determined using standard ecological analytic procedures. PAST and SPSS were used for the statistical analysis. The temperature ranged between 26.5 to 33 ºC, salinity (1.23 to 1.86 %), pH (7.4 to 9.62), Total Dissolved Solids (2419 to 5,817 mg/L), conductivity (223.83 to 7,328 μS/cm), turbidity (3.415 to 15.05 NTU) and Dissolved Oxygen (3.8 to 6.8 mg/L). The conductivity was observed to be above the recommended values by WHO (2006). Zooplankton are very important in assessing pollution in water bodies by indicating changes in quality. The percentage frequency distribution of zooplankton from May to July were; Protozoa (48 %), Copepoda (29 %), Nematoda (14 %), Rotifera (9 %) and Porifera (0.3 %). A total number of 288 Individuals were recorded during the sample period. Protozoa recorded the highest number of species (10) with a total number of 138 individuals while Porifera recorded the lowest number of species (3) with a total number of 26 individuals. The highest number of taxa (27) was recorded in station 1 while the lowest (24) was observed in station 2 during the sampling periods. The physicochemical parameters showed a polluted hydrological environment with degraded water conditions and the presence of a high impact on the distribution, abundance and diversity of zooplankton at the station adjacent to the dredging site. Hence there is a need to conserve the conditions of the creek because of its uniqueness and significance generally in the life history of many aquatic organisms

    Unlocking the Promise of the ″Miracle Tree: A Review on Therapeutic Applications and Phytochemistry of Moringa Oleifera L.

    Moringa oleifera, commonly known as the miracle tree , has been used for centuries in traditional medicine and has recently garnered interest from the scientific community for its therapeutic potential. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the phytochemistry, nutritional composition, and medicinal properties of different parts of M. oleifera. The leaves, pods, bark, roots, seeds, and flowers contain various essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, and phytochemicals such as flavonoids, glucosinolates, and phenolic acids. These bioactive compounds confer anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, anti-venom, and wound healing properties. Extracts and isolates from M. oleifera have shown efficacy against diabetes, cancer, hypertension, pain, infertility, and infections in preclinical studies. Besides the medicinal applications, the plant has commercial potential for uses in food fortification, water purification, biodiesel production, and cosmetics. However, further research through rigorous clinical trials is required to validate the traditional medicinal uses and establish safe and effective therapeutic applications. The phytochemical diversity of M. oleifera also needs to be fully explored to identify bioactive lead compounds. Harnessing the nutritional and multi-therapeutic potential of this miracle tree can provide affordable treatment options especially in developing countries

    Study on Performance Behavior of Fayoumi and Rhode Island Red Poultry Breeds

    The present study was conducted to compare the performance and behavior of Fayoumi and Rhode Island Red poultry breeds. A total of forty-two birds at 26 weeks of age, with thirty-six females and six males from each breed, were distributed into 6 groups with one male and six females each. All the experimental groups were reared in separate partitions with provisions of nests, feeders, and drinkers under proper management conditions. The results of the current study revealed that Rhode Island Red chickens showed significantly higher (P \u3c 0.05) body weight, egg weight, daily egg production, eggshell thickness, and other quality parameters compared to Fayoumi chickens. It was also noted that Rhode Island Red chickens consumed less feed and gained heavier bodies with higher egg production than Fayoumi chickens. There was a non-significant difference in feed intake between both breeds. Rhode Island Red chickens produced eggs with better shell quality and higher breaking strength compared to Fayoumi chickens. In conclusion, the Rhode Island Red chicken breed is better in terms of body weight, egg performance, and feed efficiency compared to Fayoumi chickens
