In Silico Study on Effects of Temperature Change on Hemodynamics of Arteriovenous Fistula and Risk of Postoperative Complication
Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) serves as a critical vascular access for hemodialysis patients, and its successful establishment is paramount for ensuring effective hemodialysis treatment. Temperature variations can significantly alter the physical properties of blood, potentially leading to unstable flow patterns within the AVF. Despite its clinical relevance, research on the effects of temperature-induced changes in blood rheological parameters on AVF internal flow dynamics remains limited. This study aims to explore the impact of temperature on AVF hemodynamics and its potential influence on postoperative complications. By incorporating a temperature-dependent non-Newtonian blood viscosity model and the Andrade viscosity model, fluid-structure interaction simulations were performed on an idealized AVF bifurcation under both cold (10 °C) and hot (30 °C) conditions. The results revealed distinct hemodynamic differences between these temperature extremes, which could exacerbate postoperative complications. Specifically, under hot conditions, the anastomosis site was more susceptible to adverse effects, with an increased risk of intimal hyperplasia and other complications in the surrounding vascular regions. These findings underscore the importance of considering environmental temperature in the clinical management of AVF for hemodialysis, offering valuable insights for physicians to optimize patient outcomes
The Semantic Web: 22nd European Semantic Web Conference, Part I
This two-volume set LNCS 15718-15719 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 22nd European Semantic Web Conference, ESWC 2025, held in Portoroz, Slovenia, during June 1–5, 2025. The 45 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 155 submissions.The ESWC’s Research track addresses the theoretical, analytical, and empirical aspects of the semantic web, semantic technologies, knowledge graphs and semantics on the Web in general. The In-use track focuses on contributions that reuse and apply state-of-the-art semantic technologies or resources to real-world settings. The resource track deals with resource contributions that are, on the one hand innovative or novel, and on the other hand sharable and reusable (e.g. datasets, knowledge graphs, ontologies, workflows, benchmarks, frameworks), and provide the necessary scaffolding to support the generation of scientific work and advance the state of the art
The Association between Gallstone Disease and Cardiovascular Disease
Background: Gallstone Disease (GSD) is a multifactorial risk factor for various complications. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between GSD and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) through a systematic review and meta-analysis approach. Methods: A thorough search was conducted across Web of Science, Scopus, MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases. Only studies published between 1980 and December 2023 were included. Chi-square, I2, and forest plots were used to assess heterogeneity. Begg\u27s and Egger\u27s tests were used to evaluate publication bias. Statistical significance was considered at p \u3c0.05, and all analyses were performed using Stata 17. Results: This meta-analysis involved 21 studies and comprised 2,138,282 participants; there has been a significant association found between GSD and an increased risk of CVD (with a relative risk of 1.46, 95% confidence interval: 1.32-1.63, p \u3c0.001). The analysis found no evidence of publication bias based on Begg\u27s test (p =0.085) and Egger\u27s test (p =0.231). Subgroup analysis of the studies showed a higher risk of CVD in studies with a sample size of less than 10,000 participants, conducted in 2016 or later, utilizing a cross-sectional design, in Asian countries; the analysis had a moderate quality score, with a follow-up period of equal to or less than ten years. Conclusion: There has been a significant association found between GSD and CVD and their incidence is related to each other. Taking proactive steps to implement targeted interventions for individuals with gallstone disease could potentially reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease within this population
Review on the War Against Glioblastoma Multiforme Tumors
This review article discusses different treatment approaches for glioblastoma multiforme tumors. The lethal characteristics of the glioblastoma are defined in depth. Risk factors, such as career firefighting, are explored, and the effect socioeconomic status has on prognosis is evaluated. The endocannabinoid system is defined, and its role in lowering rates of proliferation for glioblastoma tumors is discussed. Immunotherapies for glioblastomas are reviewed. Specifically, the current clinical trials on an Australian physician who is battling his own glioblastoma are discussed. Importantly, this physician is using his own treatment regimen and has been having clear scans for 18 months
Seroprevalence and Risk Determinants of Toxoplasma Gondii Infection in Pregnant Women In Pakistan: A Cross-Sectional Study
Toxoplasma gondii is a globally important zoonotic parasite, and maternal infection during pregnancy may cause miscarriage, congenital anomalies, or severe neonatal complications. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 367 pregnant women attending hospitals in District Dir Upper, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, to evaluate the seroprevalence of T. gondii and associated risk factors. Blood samples were analyzed using Immunochromatographic Test (ICT) for initial screening, and positive cases were confirmed by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Overall, 34.6 % (127/367) of women tested positive. While no significant differences were observed across age groups, gestational trimesters, or abortion history, higher prevalence was noted in women aged 26-30 years (35.1 %), those in their third trimester (40.4 %), and women with a history of abortion (43 %). Seropositivity was higher among illiterate women (35.7 %) than educated women (30 %). Contact with livestock (37.5 %) and cats (46 %) were significantly associated with infection (p \u3c 0.05). IgM antibodies predominated across age, gestation stages, and abortion history, while IgG was more frequent in women with livestock and cat contact. These findings indicate that T. gondii infection is notably prevalent in the region, with livestock and cat exposure being key risk factors
Isolation and Molecular Characterization of Shiga Toxin Producing Genes STX1AND STX2 from the Captive Migratory Birds of Lahore
A total of 240 cloacal and fecal swabs were collected from 25 avian species, including ducks, swans, geese, pheasants, guinea fowl, parrots, cranes, and crows. Samples were cultured on Sorbitol MacConkey Agar, and presumptive Escherichia coli isolates were confirmed using morphological, biochemical, and molecular methods. Shiga toxin–producing E. coli (STEC) was identified through PCR detection of stx1 and stx2 genes, followed by sequencing. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed using the Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion method against streptomycin, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, azithromycin, and tetracycline. Only four STEC isolates were recovered, resulting in an overall prevalence of 1.66 % (4/240). Positive cases were detected in Guinea fowl (5 %) and Silver pheasant (4.76 %) from safari parks, and White swan (3.57 %) and Black swan (3.03 %) from zoos. Two isolates from swans carried the highly virulent stx2 gene, while the remaining two harbored stx1. All isolates exhibited multidrug resistance, with high resistance to ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone, and azithromycin, moderate resistance to tetracycline, and general susceptibility to streptomycin. Evaluation of natural antimicrobials showed strong inhibitory and bactericidal activity of white alum and selected nanocomposites, whereas hydrogen peroxide was ineffective. This study provides the first report of stx1 and stx2 positive STEC in captive migratory birds in Pakistan, highlighting potential zoonotic risks and the need for routine surveillance, strengthened biosecurity, and responsible antibiotic use
