    ¿Literaturas para el final de los tiempos? Creación literaria en Guinea Ecuatorial y el Sáhara Occidental durante el proceso descolonizador.

    Cabe preguntarse por el papel de la creación literaria durante la provincialización de Guinea Ecuatorial y el Sáhara Occidental, durante los acontecimientos históricos que llevaron a la independencia o al abandono, verdadero «final de los tiempos» por lo que suponían de cambio radical en las condiciones de vida de la población local. Durante la etapa de la provincialización prácticamente no hay obra impresa de guineanos o saharauis, que se irá publicando mucho más tarde, principalmente desde el exilio en España, de manera que no se puede hablar de una literatura anticolonial en español. Tras la retirada de España del golfo de Guinea y del Sáhara Occidental, ¿apareció una literatura postcolonial africana en español? ¿Qué efectos tuvieron en la creación literaria los acontecimientos que se produjeron en Guinea después de 1968 y en el Sáhara después de 1976? Este texto repasa de forma sucinta las obras literarias creadas durante la provincialización y la descolonización y analiza si esos acontecimientos afectaron a la escritura de ficción.The role of literary creation during the provincialization of Equatorial Guinea and Western Sahara raises important questions, particularly in the context of the historical events that led to their independence or abandonment—a true "end of times" marked by significant changes in the living conditions of the local populations. During the provincialization phase, there was virtually no published work by Guineans or Sahrawis; such works only emerged much later, primarily from exiles in Spain. As a result, we cannot discuss an anti-colonial literature in Spanish during this time. Following Spain's withdrawal from the Gulf of Guinea and Western Sahara, did African postcolonial literature in Spanish arise? What impact did the events in Guinea after 1968 and in the Sahara after 1976 have on literary creation? This text provides a brief overview of the literary works produced during the periods of provincialization and decolonization while analyzing whether these events influenced the writing of fiction

    Sensorial and Sonic Aspects in the Writings of the "English-American" Thomas Gage (c. 1603-1656) on Mexico and Guatemala

    Objective/Context: This article examines dimensions of sensoriality within the writings of Thomas Gage (c. 1603-1656) regarding his experiences as a Dominican friar in Mexico and Guatemala between 1625 and 1637. His 1648 travelogue, The English-American His Travail by Sea and Land, is the first detailed eyewitness report of daily life in the Spanish colonies by an English writer. Yet this work and his other writings were published after he converted to Protestantism and formed an explicit part of the anti-Catholic discourse in England. Methodology: Written from a historical-musicological perspective, this study is informed by the approaches of sensory history to identify and critique the sonic episodes and metaphors in Gage's texts. It critically analyzes his travelogue and investigates how his accounts of musical, gastronomic, and religious experiences underpinned and influenced his political and theological views. To draw out his unique perspectives on music, it also considers soundscapes and the material and cultural dimensions in his descriptions. Originality: Recent scholarship has shown how Gage's transnational and transconfessional identities did not fit traditional frameworks of analysis and limited scholarly attention to him. Lately, however, researchers have highlighted his mention of the senses. This article focuses specifically on hearing to show that his writings contain unique viewpoints and data on music and sound. Conclusions: Assessment of Thomas Gage within the frameworks of musicology and sensory history demonstrates that he invoked the senses in seemingly unique ways, especially by conflating their physical and metaphysical dimensions when critiquing Catholic practices in colonial contexts.Research for this article has been carried out within the framework of the project “Poder y Representaciones Culturales en la Época Moderna,” financed by the Agencia Estatal de Investigación, Government of Spain (PID2020-115565GB-C21).     The SDSS-IV eBOSS: Emission line galaxy catalogues at z ≈ 0.8 and study of systematic errors in the angular clustering

P.; Zhou, X.; Zhou, Z.; Zhu, G.We present two wide-field catalogues of photometrically selected emission line galaxies (ELGs) at z ≈ 0.8 covering about 2800 degover the south galactic cap. The catalogues were obtained using a Fisher discriminant technique described in a companion paper. The two catalogues differ by the imaging used to define the Fisher discriminant: the first catalogue includes imaging from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, the second also includes information from the South Galactic Cap U-band Sky Survey. Containing respectively 560 045 and 615 601 objects, they represent the largest ELG catalogues available today and were designed for the ELG programme of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). We study potential sources of systematic variation in the angular distribution of the selected ELGs due to fluctuations of the observational parameters. We model the influence of the observational parameters using a multivariate regression and implement a weighting scheme which allows effective removal of all of the systematic errors induced by the observational parameters. We show that fluctuations in the imaging zero-points of the photometric bands have minor impact on the angular distribution of objects in our catalogues. We compute the angular clustering of both catalogues and show that our weighting procedure effectively removes spurious clustering on large scales. We fit a model to the small-scale angular clustering, showing that the selections have similar biases of 1.35/D(z) and 1.28/D(z).     Unveiling the Late Quaternary Stratigraphy of a Low Sedimentation Shelf Indented by a submarine Canyon in the NW Mediterranean

    Póster presentado en 2nd International Conference on Seafloor Landforms, Processes and Evolution, Lipari, Italia 1–3 July 2024The Blanes submarine canyon head (NW Mediterranean), located 4 km off the coast, acts as a morphological boundary between the sediment-starved Planassa shelf to the North and the depositional Barcelona shelf to the South. This study explores the variability in sedimentation patterns and processes during the late Quaternary in the Blanes submarine canyon head, using high-resolution bathymetry (5 m grid size) and very high-resolution single-channel (Sparker) and Topographic Parametric Sonar (TOPAS) seismic data. The seismostratigraphic analysis has allowed to identify four unconformities that can be correlated with the four last fourth-order (100–120 ka) high-amplitude late Quaternary glacio-eustatic cycles. The unconformities include SB4 (MIS 2), SB3 (MIS 6), SB2 (MIS 8) and SB1(MIS 10). SB1 is noted as a highly erosional surface that shows deep channels, particularly north of the canyon, interpreted as ancient canyon head tributaries filled by younger sequences. Most of the post-SB1 stratigraphic record is dominated by forced-regressive deposits interpreted as falling stage systems tracts and disposed in a general forestepping stacking pattern. Late Quaternary sequences are thin close to the canyon head tip, where the former configuration of the canyon head is still discernible in the seabed morphology. Conversely, to the northwest of the canyon head, the ancient canyon is filled with sedimentary sequences of considerable thickness. We discuss the role played by the proximity of the riverine sediment sources, sediment transport processes and the antecedent geomorphology in the generation of late Quaternary depositional sequences and the progressive infilling of the canyon head

    A machine learning toolbox for the analysis of sharp-wave ripples reveals common waveform features across species

    The study of sharp-wave ripples has advanced our understanding of memory function, and their alteration in neurological conditions such as epilepsy is considered a biomarker of dysfunction. Sharp-wave ripples exhibit diverse waveforms and properties that cannot be fully characterized by spectral methods alone. Here, we describe a toolbox of machine-learning models for automatic detection and analysis of these events. The machine-learning architectures, which resulted from a crowdsourced hackathon, are able to capture a wealth of ripple features recorded in the dorsal hippocampus of mice across awake and sleep conditions. When applied to data from the macaque hippocampus, these models are able to generalize detection and reveal shared properties across species. We hereby provide a user-friendly open-source toolbox for model use and extension, which can help to accelerate and standardize analysis of sharp-wave ripples, lowering the threshold for its adoption in biomedical applications.This work was supported by the Fundación La Caixa (LCF/PR/HR21/52410030 and LCF/PR/HR22/52420005) to L.M.P. and by the Whitehall Foundation and BRAIN Initiative NINDS (R01NS127128) to K.L.H.     Adenosine receptors are the on-and-off switch of astrocytic cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptor effect upon synaptic plasticity in the medial prefrontal cortex

    The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is involved in cognitive functions such as working memory. Astrocytic cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R) induces cytosolic calcium (Ca) concentration changes with an impact on neuronal function. mPFC astrocytes also express adenosine A and A receptors (AR, AR), being unknown the crosstalk between CB1R and adenosine receptors in these cells. We show here that a further level of regulation of astrocyte Ca signaling occurs through CB1R-AR or CB1R-AR heteromers that ultimately impact mPFC synaptic plasticity. CB1R-mediated Ca transients increased and decreased when AR and AR were activated, respectively, unveiling adenosine receptors as modulators of astrocytic CB1R. CB1R activation leads to an enhancement of long-term potentiation (LTP) in the mPFC, under the control of AR but not of AR. Notably, in IP3R2KO mice, that do not show astrocytic Ca level elevations, CB1R activation decreases LTP, which is not modified by AR or AR.     Mapa de anomalías magnéticas del Pirineo a partir del EMAG2v2; interpretación geológica

    Comunicación oral presentada en XI Congreso Geológico de España, Ávila del 2 al 6 de julio 2024Las propiedades magnéticas de la corteza del Pirineo y sus implicaciones tectónicas han sido investigadas localmente, pero su caracterización a escala del orógeno ha sido poco explorada hasta ahora. Este trabajo pretende (1) correlacionar las principales anomalías magnéticas con la geología de superficie, e (2) inferir la profundidad y naturaleza de los cuerpos que las originan, empleando los datos de intensidad magnética del EMAG2v2 (Maus et al., 2009). Se ha calculado el mapa de anomalías magnéticas reducidas al polo (RTP), mapa de derivadas magnéticas, soluciones de Euler y espectro de potencia. El mapa RTP (- 50,2 a +83,2 nT) muestra una configuración heterogénea de las principales anomalías, se correlacionan con diferentes cuerpos geológicos y reflejan asimetría respecto al eje estructural, en la Zona Axial pirenaica. Los mapas de derivadas permiten definir diferentes dominios tectónicos y texturas magnéticas. Las soluciones de Euler y el espectro de potencia permiten inferir las profundidades de los cuerpos generadores financiado por la European Union-Next Generation EU en el marco del Plan de Recuperación, Transformación y Resiliencia.[EN] The magnetic properties and tectonic implications of the Pyrenean crust have been studied locally, but their characterization at the orogenic scale has deserved less attention. The objectives of this work are: (1) to correlate the main magnetic anomalies with the surface geology, and (2) to determine the depth and nature of the magnetic anomaly sources, through magnetic intensity data from the EMAG2v2 (Maus et al., 2009). We calculated the reduced to the pole (RTP) map, derivative maps, Euler solutions and Power Spectrum. The RTP map ( 50.2 to 83.2 nT) displays a nonuniform distribution of the main magnetic anomalies, linked to different geological bodies and showing an asymmetry pattern with respect to the structural axis of the range, the Axial Zone. The derivatives allow depicting different tectonic domains and magnetic textures.     Purpose The purpose of this study was to analyse the impact on peri-prosthetic joint infection (PJI) rate and prosthetic survival using antibiotic-loaded bone cement (ALBC) versus plain cement during total knee arthroplasty (TKA).Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted. The main data source was the Catalan Arthroplasty Register (RACat). TKAs with surgery date between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2020 were analysed and followed up until 31 December 2023. The main variable of interest was the type of cement (ALBC vs. plain cement), and several endpoints (septic revision, aseptic revision, and all-cause revision) were considered. The analysed outcomes were revision rates, survival rates and risk factors' hazard ratios (HR).Results A total of 22,781 TKAs were analysed, 13,125 (57.6%) of them with plain cement and 9656 (42.4%) with ALBC. The septic revision rate was lower in the ALBC group after 3 months of follow-up (0.52% vs. 0.78%, p value = 0.04). Prosthetic survival with respect to the aseptic revision endpoint was also higher for the ALBC group during the whole follow-up period (~158 months). Regarding risk factors for infection, ALBC showed a protective effect, HR: 0.53 (0.44, 0.63), while sex (being male) and the analysed comorbidities increased the risk.Conclusions ALBC is associated with a reduction in both the septic revision and the aseptic revision rate after TKA, and thus with higher prosthetic survival.Level of Evidence Level III, Therapeutic, retrospective.This work was supported by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (projects PID2022-136787NB-I00 and PID2019-104156GB-I00), the European Commission H2020 program (grants 101060693, 101057693, 952026) and the Agència de Gestió d'Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca (Award Number: 2020-18).     Demographic effects of sanitary policies on European vulture population dynamics: A retrospective modeling approach

    The prediction of population responses to environmental changes, including the effects of different management scenarios, is a useful tool and a necessary contributor to improving conservation decisions. Empirical datasets based on long-term monitoring studies are essential to assess the robustness of retrospective modeling predictions on biodiversity. These allow checks on the performance of modeling projections and enable improvements to be made to future models, based on the errors detected. Here, we assess the performance of our earlier model to assess the impact of vulture food shortages caused by sanitary regulations on the population dynamics of Spanish vultures during the past decade (2009-2019). This model forecasts the population trends of three vulture species (griffon, Egyptian, and bearded vultures) in Spain (home to 90% of the European vulture population) under various food shortage scenarios. We show that it underestimated bearded and griffon vulture population numbers and overestimated Egyptian vultures. The model suggested that the most plausible food shortage scenario involved an approximate 50% reduction of livestock carcass availability in the ecosystem compared with the previous situation without sanitary carcass removal. However, the observed annual population growth for the period 2009-2019 (7.8% for griffon vulture, 2.4% for Egyptian vulture, and 3.5% for bearded vulture) showed that food shortages had little impact on vulture population dynamics. After assessing the robustness of the model, we developed a new model with updated demographic parameters and foraging movements under different hypothetical food shortage scenarios for the period 2019-2029. This model forecasts annual population increases of about 3.6% for the bearded vulture, 3.7% for the Egyptian vulture, and 1.1% for the Griffon vulture. Our findings suggest that food shortages due to the implementation of sanitary policies resulted in only a moderate impact on vulture population growth, probably thanks to the supplementary feeding network which provided alternative food. Also important was the availability of alternative food sources (intensive farms, landfills) that were used more regularly than expected. We discuss the computational performance of our modeling approach and its management consequences to improve future conservation measures for these threatened species, which provide essential ecosystem services.Thanks to Generalitat of Catalonia, especially D.
