Visibly Sustainable : Exploring climate information as visual communication
This study explores how climate impact can be communicated clearly, credibly, and visually through packaging design, with a focus on the EU-initiated Digital Product Passport (DPP). Combining theoretical research, consumer surveys, and a design project, the study shows that graphic design can help bridge the value-action gap by making sustainability information more accessible. The project centers around hand-blown glass bowls and presents a packaging concept where the emissions are visualized as a climate price tag, linked via QR code to a digital product passport. Results indicate strong consumer demand for concrete climate data, despite low awareness of DPP. The project highlights the importance of integrating sustainability communication into products while reflecting on the risk of greenwashing. Graphic design evident as a powerful but delicate tool for promoting transparent and meaningful sustainability communication within a consumption-driven context
Sustainable Property Development
Abstract Title: Sustainable Property Development Date: 2025-05-21 Level: Bachelor's Thesis in Business Administration (15 credits) Authors: Agnes Andersson & Molly Petersson Supervisor: Gunnar Wramsby Examiner: Per- Ola Ulvenblad Keywords: Property development, energy efficiency, ecological sustainability, economic sustainability and operating costs. Problem background: Sustainable development is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The construction and real estate sector is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions, which means that the transition of this sector and sustainable property development are significant for achieving the climate goals. Sweden has set the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2045 and has committed to fulfilling the UN's Agenda 2030. This requires reducing emissions not just during construction, but throughout the building ́s entire lifecycle. Problem statement: How can property companies work with sustainable property development? How can sustainable property development impact ecological sustainability? How can sustainable property development contribute to increased economic profitability? Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyze the impact of how property companies work with sustainable property development. Limitation: This study is limited to exploring only the economic and ecological aspects of sustainability and excludes the social dimension. Methodology: A qualitative study with a abductive method, based on six interviews with property companies in Halland, Småland and Västergötland. Conclusion: Property companies work with sustainable property development by reducing energy use, choosing eco-friendly materials, applying environmental certification, and collaboration with other stakeholders to reach sustainability goals. Investing in renewable energy and promoting biodiversity enhances ecological sustainability. Sustainable property development also contributes to increased economic profitability through competitive advantages, lower operating costs, higher demand from tenants, and the opportunity to receive green financing from investors
Generating Actionable Insights from Integration Testing Data and Product Documentation in B2B SaaS Using ChatGPT
In the Software as a Service (SaaS) industry, web APIs are a common method for enabling integrations between a SaaS provider and its customers. Ensuring good customer API integrations is important for optimal product performance. However, achieving an optimal API integration is often challenging and time-consuming, due to the complexity of these systems. While previous research has focused on developing domain-specific chatbots, less focus has been on how LLMs can be integrated into existing enterprise workflows to generate actionable insights. This research contributes to addressing that gap by designing, building, and evaluating an artifact that generates natural language insights from integration test data and product documentation. Design Science Research is used as the methodology, supported by semi-structured interviews with domain experts. Findings indicate that the artifact has potential to provide valuable insights based on integration tests, though the quality of the insights can vary. This thesis shows that LLMs, using Retrieval-Augmented Generation, can generate actionable insights to help business-to-business SaaS providers improve customers’ API integrations. Further research is needed to explore the full potential and limitations of such systems.
The Legal Governance of Gender : Trans Precarity and the Normative Order
This thesis examines how legal discourse constructs trans identities as threats and produces precarity through the case study of Florida Senate Bill 254. Using Judith Butler’s theories of performativity and precarity, alongside Carol Bacchi’s WPR (What’s the Problem Represented to be?) method, the study analyzes how law functions not just as regulation but as a performative tool of normative control. SB 254 is shown to enforce binary gender norms, delegitimize trans identities, and expand state authority under the guise of child protection. The analysis reveals that the law reflects deeper ideological structures of society, including authoritarian governance, cisheteropatriarchy, Christian nationalism, and moral panic. These structures are enacted through legal and discursive techniques of control including criminalization, pathologization, and derealization. The findings show how law materializes social norms and produces precarity, shaping which lives are recognized, protected, or exposed to harm.
Shadows under the spotlights : A qualitative study on stigmatization, identity formation, and social belongingin football hooliganism
The aim of this study has been to investigate the factors that increase the risk of an individual engaging in football hooliganism. Furthermore, the study seeks to explore how stigmatization from society affects these individuals' perceptions of themselves and their group. The study is based on six qualitative interviews with three active and three former active football hooligans. The theoretical framework used is Erving Goffman's dramaturgical perspective, with a particular focus on the concepts of stigmatization, identity formation, and social belonging. These theories have been applied in the analysis of the empirical data to provide a deeper understanding of the participants' experiences and perspectives revealed during the interviews. The results show that the paths into hooligan culture are shaped by both individual factors, such as the need for excitement, and social circumstances, such as the sense of community. The hooligan group is described not only as a violent environment but also as a place where our respondents experience safety and loyalty. The sense of community within the group is seen not only as a safety net but also a source of meaning in their lives with real value. At the same time, a clear inner conflict emerges among the participants between how they view themselves and how they perceive society views them. Stigmatization plays a central role in how the individuals manage and live with their dual identities, one as a football hooligan and one as an ordinary citizen. This balancing act requires football hooligans to constantly navigate between different roles. The study also highlights how stigmatization acts as an obstacle to social inclusion. Despite the participants expressing a desire to integrate their role as football hooligans into their daily lives, they feel that their past or present connection to hooliganism often leads to exclusion and limits their opportunities for belonging and social recognition in society. This appears as a contradictory phenomenon, as society rejects hooligans through stigmatization. This, in turn, prolongs the distancing from inclusion and strengthens the individuals' loyalty to the community that football hooligan culture offers.
Arbetsplatsstöd för hållbart pendlande : Fallstudie av centrala Reykjavík
This thesis examines the potential impact that workplaces in the city centre of Reykjavík can have on the commuting behaviour of their employees by promoting sustainable transportation. This issue is particularly relevant as Reykjavík seeks to reduce car dependency and encourage sustainable travel as part of its urban sustainability goals. The thesis asks explicitly to what extent and in what ways city centre workplaces can influence their employees’ commuting choices towards more sustainable modes of travel and what factors facilitate or hinder such shifts. To investigate this question, a case study of two city-centre workplaces in Reykjavík was conducted, combining in-depth interviews and questionnaires to gather qualitative and quantitative data on commuting patterns and attitudes. This approach provided detailed insights into organisational practices and employee perspectives on commuting. The analysis is guided by Boltanski and Thévenot's orders of worth framework, which provides a conceptual lens to understand how different value-based justifications shape commuting decisions. The findings identify several workplace-level incentives promising to encourage employees to commute more sustainably, including transportation grants tied to sustainable commuting commitments, trial programs for electric bicycles, and improved facilities such as bicycle storage, showers, and locker rooms. These measures demonstrate the influence internal workplace initiatives can have on commuting habits. However, structural and cultural barriers beyond the workplace level also play an important role in shaping commuting behaviour, often limiting the impact of workplace initiatives. Overall, the research demonstrates that workplaces have significant potential to foster more sustainable commuting patterns among employees. It also highlights that beyond workplace strategies and incentives, transport policy measures and urban planning interventions are essential for addressing systemic barriers beyond the scope of individual workplaces and achieving broader shifts in urban mobility. These findings underscore the need for coordinated efforts between employers and public authorities to effectively shift commuting behaviour towards sustainable modes of transport
Identifying Organisational and Process Opportunities in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing : A Case Study Using Lean Six Sigma and Socio-Economic Approach to Management at Fresenius Kabi, Uppsala
Large pharmaceutical companies operate in a complex, highly regulated business environment. Considering a competitive market with growing demand for healthcare, significant challenges occur related to the request for increased efficiency while maintaining compliance. As a result, continuous improvement is viewed as a strategic necessity. These improvement efforts tend to prioritise technical solutions, shaped by the engineering-driven nature of manufacturing environments. While tools such as Lean Six Sigma (LSS) have been widely and successfully adopted to address technical inefficiencies, these methods often overlook the social aspects of the workplace. Complementary approaches are therefore needed to uncover social dynamics that impact operations, one such approach is the Socio-Economic Approach to Management (SEAM). This case study, in collaboration with Fresenius Kabi at their manufacturing site in Uppsala, Sweden, explores how operational inefficiencies in pharmaceutical manufacturing can be identified and addressed through a mixed-method approach, combining LSS and SEAM to account for both process-related and organisational factors. Using an action research methodology, data were gathered through workplace observations and semi-structured interviews, as well as from internal documentation. Analysis based on tools from both LSS and SEAM led to the identification of three key improvement areas: addressing the negative effects of a siloed organisation, optimising data collection, and managing technical issues. Findings showed that many operational inefficiencies could have roots in social dysfunctions, often linked to siloed communication. These silos, common in regulated settings, limits collaboration and autonomy, creating barriers to improvement and generating hidden costs for the organisation. To address these effects, the thesis proposes a set of improvement solutions, including cross-functional collaboration through Kaizen events, reducing hierarchical barriers through Gemba Walks, and improving transparency through structured communication strategies. The study concludes that improvement efforts in complex organisations could benefit from considering both technical and social factors to account for underlying inefficiencies. Limitations in the current research, however, suggest that, while this study has demonstrated the usefulness of combining LSS and SEAM to uncover opportunities for improvement, further research is needed to prove their complete benefits
Application of Roughness Elements for Effective Energy Dissipation in Chute Spillways
Sweden has about 10,000 dams today in various sizes, some dating back over 100 years. Many of these dams were designed to withstand what was, at the time, thought to be the highest flow rate the dam could possibly be expected to encounter. But with today’s experiments and calculations, along with the changing environments from climate change, many of these dams are expected to withstand higher flow rates than what they were originally designed for. There are multiple ways of increasing the capacity of a dam; one expensive solution is to rebuild dams that cannot withstand the higher flow rates, but this introduces other problems, such as temporarily redirecting the water flow. Another less expensive solution would be to modify the existing spillway to handle higher flow rates, which can be done by decreasing the water’s kinetic energy by guiding it over roughness elements. This is what this thesis will study; we will explore the possibility and effects of introducing roughness elements in the latter part of a channel after the dam chute, where we want to decrease the velocity of the water, which will lower the effects of erosion. Erosion is one of the most common causes of dam failure, where high flow rates can wear down the dam. Overtopping caused by water spilling over the top of the dam is also a common problem during periods of floods or otherwise higher flow rates, where the earth can be carried away by the water’s immense force. This study used CFD simulations to analyse the effects that the roughness elements have on the water, where the Velocity Magnitude, Turbulent Kinetic Energy, and Froude number were presented in contour plots, along with the pressure distribution over a surface generated by the Q-Criterion. The results would show that the two different configurations of roughness elements will perform similarly when looking at the Specific Energy. However, there are some noteworthy differences in the contour plots, differences in how the water behaves over the roughness elements, where the most turbulent regions are, and how the pressure changes around the different types of roughness elements
