Atypical development of sequential manual motor planning and visuomotor integration in children with autism at early school-age: A longitudinal kinematic study
Sensorimotor difficulties are common in children with autism spectrum disorder, and it has been suggested that motor planning problems underlie their atypical movements. At early school-age, motor planning development typically involves changes in visuomotor integration, a function known to be affected in autism spectrum disorder. However, there is a lack of detailed characterization of typical motor planning development during this stage, and how motor planning develops in children with autism spectrum disorder is largely unknown. This longitudinal kinematic study examined goal-directed sequential manual movements in children with autism spectrum disorder and in typically developing children across ages 7, 8, and 9 years. We manipulated goal-difficulty and availability of initial visual information to investigate visuomotor integration and chaining of subparts during movement performance. The results revealed emerging group differences at older age, suggesting atypical motor planning development in children with autism spectrum disorder. Notably, unlike the typically developing group, availability of initial visual information did not facilitate motor planning for the autism spectrum disorder group. The results show that motor planning differences in autism spectrum disorder appear related to atypical visuomotor integration and global processing of sensorimotor information. The findings also emphasize the importance of considering developmental aspects in research and practice related to motor problems in children with autism spectrum disorder
Effects of support and self-care through digital interventions in anxiety symtoms : A non-systematic literature review
Background Anxiety is a major issue in the western world and if it's left untreated it can lead to other psychiatric conditions. Digital interventions have the potential to provide flexible and accessible care, along with new opportunities for self-care. It is essential that nurses ensure e-health promotes patient participation, facilitates communication, and adheres to ethical principles in its use. Aim The aim was to study the effects of support and self-care through digital interventions for people with anxiety symptoms. Method This study was a non-systematic literature review. Combining different search terms, 11 scientific original articles were retrieved from the databases CINAHL, PubMed, and PsychINFO. To ensure scientific quality, the articles underwent a quality assessment based on the evaluation criteria of Sophiahemmet University. An integrated data analysis was then conducted to compile the results. Results Digital interventions, such as internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) and mobile applications, showed to be effective in reducing anxiety symptoms and improving the quality of life for individuals experiencing anxiety. Studies indicated that these interventions contributed to reduced anxiety, worry, and social anxiety, with adherence varying depending on usability, motivation, and workload. Among the interventions included in this study were Intellicare, Daylight, ImExposure, Life Flex, DVD-based video therapy, and telephone-based CBT. The results also showed that these treatments could be effective both with and without therapist support, but individual adaptation might have influenced the outcome. Conclusions The results showed that digital interventions can reduce anxiety, improve quality of life, and increase participation and self-efficacy among participants. The study also found that adherence varied depending on factors such as life situation, digital competence, and motivation, confirming that self-care requires continuity and individual adaptation. These findings can enhance the understanding of the effects of digital interventions and provide support to nurses in their approach to patients with anxiety
Scaffolding appraisal and reader awareness to enhance participatory writing in the Swedish middle-school classroom
In this paper, we explore how participation and participatory writing can be enhanced through Appraisal theory and reader awareness. Democratic participation by the means of writing is a crucial and powerful tool. Through an intensive writing intervention, we explore the effects of scaffolding on two key aspects of participatory writing, expressing interpersonal meaning (one’s own thoughts) and awareness of readers (by argumentation and interaction in rhetorical structures) and how this can enhance participatory writing. We focus on middle-school pupils and thusly address a critical developmental stage where foundational writing skills can be significantly enhanced. Results show that the intervention based on scaffolding techniques had an impact on some aspects of the pupils’ writing. For example, some pupils responded more to counter arguments, thereby including more discussion in their texts. Also, even though the intervention did not include the rhetorical structure of a letter, pupils did include more leave-taking after the intervention. Further, the intervention had an impact on pupils’ attitude and graduation; they used more of both after the writing intervention than before
This project explores the creative intersections between Western classical music and popular music traditions through analysis, composition, and reflection. As a singer and instrumentalist rooted in both African American musical traditions and European art music, I aimed to broaden my compositional methods by studying classical works and translating their techniques into new, original music. Drawing on harmonic structures, thematic development, contrapuntal writing, and symbolism, I created a series of compositions that reflect an integration of classical influences into a popular music context. The process revealed key insights: the power of working from simple, clearly defined ideas, and the importance of keeping aesthetic expression central in theoretically driven projects. Ultimately, the project demonstrates how deep engagement with unfamiliar musical languages can expand a composer's expressive palette and challenge habitual tendencies, resulting in music that is both personally authentic and artistically renewed.Elegy - L. Worsening asthma at school is associated with poor psychosocial well-being
Objective: To study whether worsening asthma at school was related to generic health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and asthma-related impact and worry among 15-year-olds with current asthma in Sweden. In addition, we studied the association between worsening asthma at school at age 15 and the change in the degree to which asthma interfered with daily activities between ages 15 and 19 years. Methods: Within the Obstructive Lung Disease in Northern Sweden (OLIN) studies, a cohort of schoolchildren has been followed from age 8 years until 19 years of age. In the current study, the sample included 266 adolescents with physician-diagnosed asthma, and either wheeze or use of asthma medication during the last 12 months at age 15 years. Results: At age 15, HRQoL scores were lower among those who reported worsening asthma at school (standardised beta (β) = −0.18, p = 0.003), they had more asthma-related worries (β = −0.33, p < 0.001) and asthma impacted their life during activities more (β = −0.46, p < 0.001) than those whose asthma did not worsen. Furthermore, the more adolescents reported that asthma worsened at school at age 15, the more it was associated with the increase in the degree to which asthma interfered with their activities between 15 and 19 years (β = 0.14, p = 0.038). Conclusions: Worsening asthma at school was associated with lower generic health-related quality of life, higher asthma-related worry and impact on daily activities among teenagers with asthma
Appearing smart, confident and motivated : a lens model approach to judgment accuracy in an educational setting
Which behavioral and visual information do teachers rely on when judging relevant characteristics of their students and which cues should they rely on? Drawing on Brunswik’s Lens Model (1956), we investigated the role of students’ expression of nonverbal behavioral cues (e.g., friendly facial expression) and physical appearance (e.g., wearing eyeglasses) and how this information is utilized during the judgment process by pre-service teachers and psychology students (N = 102). Perceivers provided ratings of students’ (N = 45) academic self-concept, intelligence and motivation in brief nonverbal video clips showing one student each in a physics classroom. Numerous behavioral and physical cues (in total 165) were extracted from the stimulus material by two independent raters. Perceivers achieved highest accuracy for students’ motivation, whereas intelligence was judged with the lowest accuracy. Lens model parameter analysis indicated that perceivers strongly relied on students’ sex, an attentive and self-assured facial expression, and whether or not a student was wearing eyeglasses in their judgments. Cues that were actually related to students’ characteristics, on the other hand, involved students’ sex, a masculine and distinctive appearance, and a tensed as well as friendly facial expression. An overall favorable judgment for boys points into the direction of a gender bias. Implications for our understanding of teacher judgment processes and outcomes are discussed
Kungsgatan : A different path to walk
The rise of the car has significantly influenced the design of our public spaces. This development has often led to the prioritization of the car’s needs in urban planning, while aspects such as sustainability, comfort, and accessibility have been neglected. This study aims to examine how a redistribution of street space can be practically implemented to promote more sustainable forms of mobility, as well as the challenges such a transformation may entail. Focusing on Kungsgatan in Norrköping, the current use and potential for transformation of the street space are analyzed through observations, interviews, and document analysis. The study is grounded in Vika Mehta’s five dimensions of public space. The results show that there are strong opportunities to enhance participation, safety, and comfort by reducing car dominance in favor of walking, cycling, and recreational areas. At the same time, the study reveals that implementing such changes often encounters public resistance and is highly dependent on political decisions, where fear of opposition can delay or complicate the process. As street transformations are complex processes, test-based approaches such as tactical urbanism can help gradually increase public acceptance of new solutions in traffic planning.
