Nigerian Agricultural Posts on Facebook and Instagram within the West African Agricultural Messaging Framework

This study generated and content-analyzed Facebook and Instagram postings on agricultural messages by Nigerian farmers in three years  (2019-2021) within specific contexts and in comparison with postings similar to ones initiated by private individuals and government agencies as well as those posted at continental level on the two social media channels. While the data are graphically displayed, a paired-sample T-test was conducted to establish statistically significant differences in the agricultural messages posted on the two social media by Nigerian farmers and farmers from other countries in Africa. All four null hypotheses tested were rejected as statistically significant differences were established between the paired population means. It was also found that Nigerian farmers are accustomed to the use of social media in promoting agricultural-related messages, indicating their exposure to the diffusion of agricultural innovation in line with the trends in advanced nations. It was concluded that social media remains a viable tool for promoting agriculture, particularly during food insecurity and global economic crisis. It was recommended that the Nigerian government should provide an enabling environment for agricultural promotion in the digital age

Inter-Cultural Communication: Sipakatau-Sipakalebbi Among Bugis-Kaili Couples in Palu

This article investigates intercultural marriage from the perspective of communication between ethnic Bugis (migrants) and ethnic Kaili (natives) in Palu City, Central Sulawesi. This study seeks to analyze and investigate the cultural principle of sipakatau-sipakalebbi (mutual respect and humanization) among married Bugis and Kaili couples in Palu City. Through an examination of the patterns and practices of intercultural communication and family communication through the lens of Indonesian local culture, this research contributes to the Relational Dialectic Theory using a case study methodology. The empirical findings of this study indicate that the sipakatau culture (mutual humanization) and the sipakalebbi principle (mutual respect), which are the guiding principles and communication strategies of Bugis ethnics, are still adhered to in their interactions with others, even though many of them are married to individuals of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. This study also found that Bugis and Kaili inter-ethnic marriage partners understand the dynamics and communicate all the dynamics concerning these cultural differences, allowing for the resolution of problems and estrangement, including those that contribute to marital conflict. Due to a lack of comprehension of the sipakatau sipakalebbi principle on the part of Kaili couples, this principle has yet to satisfy Bugis couples in practice

Immersive journalism presents information of an event from a first-person perspective to the audience through 360-degree videos that can be watched on smartphones. However, an immersive experience does not guarantee that Gen Z audiences will understand the information conveyed, due to the attraction of short attention spans. Audiences need skills to be able to navigate the media they watch to get the information they consume. Literacy studies on immersive 360-degree video, especially in Indonesia, are still rare. Even though digital media is increasingly immersive in presenting content, it is not known how far young audiences are able to analyze and critically assess the content accessed. This study aims to measure the media literacy level of the audience and its influence on the ability to process 360-degree video. A survey was conducted of 400 students in Jakarta in November 2022. The findings show that the processing capacity of 360-degree videos is significantly affected by a person’s level of media literacy. The better their media literacy ability, the easier it is for someone to process information from 360-degree videos

Media coverage of climate change is a fairly important issue in Indonesia to analyze how the media makes the issue of climate change a media agenda and, at the same time, monitor how the government’s commitment to the issue of climate change both in terms of policy, prevention, and handling. The method used is a descriptive quantitative content analysis method using a sentiment analysis approach. This study analyzed 3608 titles of news articles published in five Indonesian national online media, namely Antaranews, Detik.com, and Republika.co, Tempo.co, and Tribunnews.com during the five years 2019-2023. The study results show that the frequency of the coverage of climate change issues is most widely reported by Antaranews at 51% and is dominated by positive sentiments as a media company owned by the Indonesian government. In contrast to non-government-owned media, namely Detik.com, Republika, Tempo.co, and Tribunnews.com, the issue of climate change is also on the media agenda, although more than Antara news. This media agenda setting is close to the media framing of climate change issue policies, not merely the amount of coverage but climate change is highlighted on the focus of how weak the handling of the impacts of climate change is.
