Determinants of the choice of marketing channels by corporate clients: an analysis of the information technology sector
Based on a survey of 505 corporate clients from the information technology industry, this study uses a logit statistical model to analyze whether such factors as loyalty, trust, client importance, intimacy between customer and supplier and the cost of changing suppliers may affect the choice of the marketing channel used by the client. The results show that the greater intimacy between a supplier and a corporate client is a determining factor for the client\u27s preference for being served by the manufacturer rather than an intermediary. In contrast, clients\u27 perception of their own importance to the supplier is not very relevant to their preference for being served directly by the manufacturer, and the other factors were not identified as (statistically important) determinants of the choice of the marketing channel. These results suggest that the real advantage of the direct sales channel over the indirect sales channel lies in its ability to strengthen the client-manufacturer relationship, thereby contributing to the development of solutions that better serve the needs of corporate clients
Intelligent tutoring system for distance education
This study aims to develop and implement a tool called intelligent tutoring system in an online course to help a formative evaluation in order to improve student learning. According to Bloom et al. (1971,117) formative evaluation is a systematic evaluation to improve the process of teaching and learning. The intelligent tutoring system may provide a timely and high quality feedback that not only informs the correctness of the solution to the problem, but also informs students about the accuracy of the response relative to their current knowledge about the solution. Constructive and supportive feedback should be given to students to reveal the right and wrong answers immediately after taking the test. Feedback about the right answers is a form to reinforce positive behaviors. Identifying possible errors and relating them to the instructional material may help student to strengthen the content under consideration. The remedial suggestion should be given in each answer with detaileddescription with regards the materials and instructional procedures before taking next step. The main idea is to inform students about what they have learned and what they still have to learn. The open-source LMS called Moodle was extended to accomplish the formative evaluation, high-quality feedback, and the communal knowledge presented here with a short online financial math course that is being offered at a large University in Brazil. The preliminary results shows that the intelligent tutoring system using high quality feedback helped students to improve their knowledge about the solution to the problems based on the errors of their past cohorts. The results and suggestion for future work are presented and discussed
Information retrieval system using Multiwords Expressions (MWE) as descriptors
This paper aims to propose an alternative method for retrieving documents using Multiwords Expressions (MWE) extracted from a document base to be used as descriptors in search of an Information Retrieval System (IRS). In this sense, unlike methods that consider the text as a set of words, bag of words, we propose a method that takes into account the characteristics of the physical structure of the document in the extraction process of MWE. From this set of terms comparing pre-processed using an exhaustive algorithmic technique proposed by the authors with the results obtained for thirteen different measures of association statistics generated by the software Ngram Statistics Package (NSP). Website recommender systems as prescriptive determiners in the decision making process
Confinado com o volume explosivo de informações na Internet, é difícil a um utilizador, manter-se informado sem um esforço enorme. A abundância de informações na Internet não veio simplificar o processo de escolhas. Paralelamente, as empresas, no sentido de reterem os seus consumidores, empregam cada vez mais amiúde sistemas de recomendação nos seus sites, e os utilizadores parecem encontrar nesta alternativa, uma estratégia prescritiva para resolver os seus problemas de procura de informação e consequente tomada de decisão. Como é que a recomendação pode influenciar a tomada de decisão? Isolando esta pergunta, aspirou-se a encontrar atributos que lançassem a pesquisa e que definissem caminhos e objetivos. Na materialização da pesquisa, refuta-se a recolha de elementos em ambientes laboratoriais, ao invés disso, a atenção da pesquisa centra-se nas pessoas reais que executam tarefas reais em condições reais, com a pesquisa centrada no processo pelo qual as decisões são tomadas no ambiente de cada pessoa. A pesquisa segue uma abordagem qualitativa do processo natural de procura de informação produzida num quadro quasi-experimental. Os resultados da pesquisa indicam que, para resolver os seus problemas de tomada de decisão, na fase de procura de informação, as pessoas avaliam as recomendações que os sítios lhe fornecem progressivamente, com recurso a uma procura interna dentro dos sítios das empresas, deixando praticamente de recorrer aos tradicionais motores de procura.Overwhelmed by an extremely large volume of information on the Internet, it is difficult for a user to keep informed without a huge effort involved. The information that abounds on the Internet does not simplify the process of choice. In parallel, companies, in order to retain their consumers, more often use recommender systems on their websites, and their users seem to regard this alternative as a prescriptive strategy to solve their problems in their search for information and the consequent decision making process. How can recommendations influence a decision making process? By isolating this question it was possible to find the attributes that defined ways and objectives to begin this research. In the materialization of the research, the choice of elements in laboratory environments was rejected; instead, the research focuses its attention on real people, who perform real tasks in real conditions as well as on the process through which decisions are made in each individual´s environment. A qualitative approach is adopted related to the natural process of search for the information produced in a quasi-experimental basis. The results of the research show that, in order to solve one´s decision making problems in the phase of information search, people evaluate recommendations that websites progressively provide them, with the possibility of performing an internal search on companies websites and resorting to traditional search engines is practically not necessary

Improving logistics services through the technology used in fleet management
Outsourcing logistics has established itself in the area of the LSP (Logistics Service Provider), which offers a range of services to its customers. In this line, transportation is characterized as one of the most important services, and therefore efficient fleet management is essential for establishing a high level of customer service. With advances in technology and vehicle tracking systems, this approach of management has gained new possibilities for the improvement of logistics services. By studying the specific case of an LSP, this paper investigates the use of these technologies in the management of their business and services. The results indicate that the LSP seeks to increase its services and to streamline information in order to respond to customer needs in real time. It is also evident in this case under study that the combination of the technology available together with the fleet management system has become a distinguishing feature for this LSP, one which increases their skills and important information for both customers and business
Requirements analysis strategy for the development of augmented reality environments
A Realidade Aumentada (RA) apresenta a vantagem de permitir o uso de ações tangíveis e de operações multimodais, envolvendo voz, gestos, tato, etc. Devido a sua variedade de interfaces é notavelmente maior a complexidade em projetá-las e usá-las. Logo, os projetistas desses sistemas precisam desenvolver um projeto centrado no usuário, se não vários problemas de usabilidade poderão surgir. Para solucionar esse problema, os projetistas de ambientes em RA precisam de orientações, guias e diretrizes para auxiliá-los na construção do projeto. Até a data, guias de projeto para RA que podem ser encontrados na literatura são sugestões bastante estreitas, derivadas de problemas específicos dos pesquisadores. Este trabalho tem o objetivo de apresentar uma investigação que resultou em uma Estratégia de Análise de Requisitos para construção de ambientes com RA. Como resultado dessa estratégia, estão disponíveis para os projetistas guias, atividades da análise do domínio e formulários que o auxiliam na análise de requisitos e na tomada de decisões de como proceder na implementação do sistema. A eficácia da estratégia é verificada com a sua aplicação a um meta-modelo de especificação de requisitos para a construção de um sistema para o auxílio do tratamento da Aracnofobia.Augmented Reality (AR) offers the advantage of enabling the use of tangible actions and multimodal operations, including voice, gestures, and touch, among others. Due to the its interface varieties of interfaces, the complexity in designing and using them is notably high. Therefore, this system´s designers need to develop a user-focused project or else a lot of usability problems may arise. In order to solve these problems, AR environment designers need instructions, guidance and guidelines in order to help them develop a project. So far, AR project instructions, found in the related literature, are very limited, stemming from researchers\u27 specific problems. This paper has the purpose of presenting an investigation that resulted in a Requirements Analysis Strategy for the development of AR environments. As a result of this strategy, guiding designers have at their disposal domain analysis activities and forms that help them analyze requirements and make decisions on how to proceed in the system´s implementation. The strategy efficacy is verified by means of its application to a requirements specification meta model for the development of a system that helps in the treatment of arachnophobia
Changing organizational practices during and after the implementation of supply chain management in a multinational steel company
Este trabalho analisa as transformações ocorridas nas práticas dos funcionários dos níveis estratégico, tático e operacional de uma empresa multinacional do setor siderúrgico após a adoção do programa de gerenciamento da cadeia de suprimentos - GCS. Na literatura, as pesquisas sobre o tema se concentram na operacionalização, limitações e justificativas desses sistemas, sendo poucas as investigações das percepções dos funcionários sobre os impactos dos recursos tecnológicos nas práticas de trabalho. Os resultados da pesquisa contribuem para uma maior compreensão das facilidades e dificuldades proporcionadas pelas manifestações dos usuários sobre as mudanças nas práticas organizacionais decorrentes da implementação dos sistemas de GCS.This paper evaluates the transformations occurred in practices of the employees at strategic, tactical and operational levels of a steel tube multinational company after the implementation of the supply chain management program - SCM. In the literature, the research about this theme is concentrated on systems\u27 operations, limitations and justifications, with few investigations of the employees\u27 perceptions about the impacts of technological resources on the work practices . The results of this research contribute to a better understanding of the facilities and difficulties provided by users\u27 manifestations about the changes in organizational practices
Hedonic preferences and utilitarian justifications at the introduction of high technology products
A rápida atualização tecnológica atrai o desenvolvimento de novos produtos no mercado, convergindo para múltiplos usos e acessos, o qual vem sendo apresentados na literatura de new productsdevelopment e systems integration. Dado o confronto destas duas literaturas, esta pesquisa posiciona seu foco de estudo para os fatores determinantes na preferência do consumo de lançamentos de produtos altamente tecnológicos, onde a utilidade hedônica / social dos produtos all-in-one(tudo em um só) tem prioridade sobre os fatores utilitários. O objetivo do trabalho é avaliar quais fatores influenciam a preferência do consumo de alta tecnologia, utilizando como objeto da pesquisa o tablet da Apple (iPad), para identificar como a decisão de uso é construída. Neste artigo realizou-se um estudo netnográfico sobre o comportamento de consumo do iPad, interpretando suas necessidades através de experiências descritas em sites norte americanos de discussão do produto, o qual apresenta comentários sobre o processo de escolha, preferência e uso. Estes sites são utilizados para coleta dos dados textuais que são codificados, interpretados e apresentados sobre a forma descrição de uso dos consumidores atuais e pretensos consumidores do objeto analisado.Fast technological upgrading attracts the development of new productsin the market, converging into multiples uses and accesses, which hasbeen presentedin the literature of new product development and systems integration. Due to their confront, this research places its study focus on the determinants of consumer preference for high technology product launch. The hedonic / social utility of the all-in-one products has a priority in utilitarian factors. The main objective of this work is to evaluate which factors influence the consumer preference of high technology users, using the Apple\u27s tablet (iPad) as a research object to identify how its use decision is made. In this article, anetnographic study was carried out about theiPadconsumer behavior, interpreting their needs through their experiences described in American websites for the discussion of the product. These sites present comments about the process of choice, preference and useof theiPad. The websites havealso been used to collect the textual database which is coded, interpreted and presented through the description of how current and potential consumers use the analyzed product
