Surrealism, which was formally announced by Andre Breton with the publication of the Surrealist Manifesto in 1924, played an active role in art history by affecting some art movements such as Letrism, Situationist International and, Fluxus that developed after itself. Surrealism not only produces extensive cultural productions in different artistic disciplines such as photography, painting, sculpture and, literature but also transforms its manifestos, which try to explain the content and purpose of the movement, into an artistic production tool. However, surrealism, one of the most important avant-garde art movements of the 20th century, has been tried to be examined within the scope of this study from a different perspective that is thought to create potential ideas for architectural practice with its spatial experiments and productions. The main focus of this study is to reveal the potentials of the discourse, which has solidified into a place, on spatial design through the manifestos of the Surrealists, and to examine the examples of places that are visioned or actualized by the Surrealists through the relationship between discourse and place on a conceptual plane. While the three main manifestos written by Andre Breton determine the boundary of discourse analysis, the concepts in the manifestos are tried to be revealed through their meanings that can be associated with the places are designed by the Surrealists. In this study, the identification of the concepts contributes to the perception of the transformation of discourse into place and also allows the Surrealist doctrine to be observed in space. The chapter entitled “Spatial productions of Surrealists” includes examples of places that are visioned or actualized by Surrealists. The examples of the places in this chapter, which tries to exemplify the spatial readability of the relationships between discourse and place, have been tried to be explained under two main headings: “Visionary Places”, which includes the imagination about the city and home, and “Actualized Places”, which includes exhibition and performance places. This chapter consists of lots of spatial productions, including the survey studies on the city of Paris, paintings by Giorgio de Chirico and Conroy Maddox, home sketches and thoughts of Tristan Tzara, Roberto Matta Echaurren, and Frederick Kiesler, exhibition arrangements by many different Surrealist artists in Paris or America, and stage design production of Antonin Artaud and Frederick Kiesler, tries to explain how the concepts in the Surrealist manifestos have influenced or shaped the spaces designed by Surrealist artists. While the extended definition of action and usage within the framework of the concepts fed the survey and drawing studies on the city and home, affect spatial organization of the exhibition and performance spaces especially in the redefinition of the audience, work, and artist relationship. However, neither Surrealism nor place can be considered or evaluated independently of the social, cultural, or political factors of the period in which they lived. For this reason, socio-political debates in the history of Surrealism become a part of this section and are used as a supporting factor in the pursuit of the concept and space relationship. It is mentioned that the concepts such as “randomness, interaction, unusualness, uncanny, formlessness, incompleteness, ambiguity and fragmentation” which shaped around the social and political readings of the period, are played an active role in the process of designing the place and thinking about the definition of the action performed in the space. This active role played by concepts enables the concept to be considered as a carrier of possibility and to perceive the possibility as a set of potentials. Therefore, different approaches to the concept make it possible or diversify the realization of different potentials on a place. This situation also contributes to the derivation of concepts by reconsidering them through periodic readings or different disciplines and thus reconstructing the relationship between possibility and place. In this context, this study aims to reveal how the possibilities of each concept emphasized in the Surrealist discourse, have the opportunity to be shaped or diversified through action, user, and periodic factors while evolving into a new place. Each possibility, which is actualized in place stimulates another one when it is analyzed. This situation plays a role in reminding the discontinuous existence and cyclical journey of Surrealism.yüzyılın avangard sanat akımlarından biri olan Sürrealizm, çalışma kapsamında bir sanat akımı olmasının ötesinde, mekânsal denemeleri ve üretimleriyle mimarlık pratiği için potansiyel fikirler yaratabileceği düşünülen bir söylem-mekân çözümlemesi perspektifi üzerinden incelenmeye çalışılmıştır.

The aim of this study is to bring together the limited information in visual and written sources about the now nonextant mills in the Ottoman period İzmir city center, and to reveal their history by making observations and comments on their contribution to the architectural image of the city that was taking shape with the industrialization processes. The information about the mills in the İzmir city center is basically obtained from two different sources. The first of these is what historical written sources and contemporary researchers convey about the mills, particularly the mills of İzmir. These are mostly limited to quantitative data such as the number of mills, paid taxes, and grain processing capacity, which do not give any clues about architectural features. The second group of sources are drawings and photographs. By scanning the city plans, engravings and photographs of the city center, the locations of the mills were in these documents, as well as the 19th century city plans that are drawn with a character close to today’s techniques. In some of the engravings and plans, the mills are shown schematically, while in others the architectural details and dimensions are conveyed more carefully. Undoubtedly, photographs provide much more precise data on this subject, but unfortunately, more closer photographs of the Ottoman period Izmir mills were not available. In fact, this absence can be interpreted as an indication of the perception that mills appear as industrial structures devoid of aesthetic qualities. Mills are generally located in very small sizes in silhouette photographs, and since they come in simple designs to serve their industrial purposes, it is very difficult to find the kind of information from which rich architectural interpretations can be drawn. However, thanks to these photographs, at least the heights of the structures can be estimated approximately. The emergence of city plans close to today’s drawing techniques in the 19th century constitutes another important source group in this context. The Graves plans of 1836 and the Saad plans of 1876 especially provide important data about the mills. Thanks to the Graves map, it was possible to identify the earliest steam-powered mill in the city, and thanks to the Saad map, the plan, shape, and dimensions of many mills were able to be determined. Mills are structures that are far from decoration and are not mentioned much in architectural history narratives due to their functional architecture. For this reason, in many studies dealings with the Ottoman period Izmir, mills are either not included at all or they are conveyed with quantitative data. However, with the increase of engravings showing the city, especially with the 17th century, it is impossible not to notice the prominent role of the mills in the city silhouette. Since windmills developed as tower-shaped high structures to receive the wind better, they also had a strong visibility in the city’s silhouette. Even though the windmills in Izmir could not compete with their counterparts in Dutch and Belgian cities in terms of an emphatic presence in the skyline, their modest appearance in İzmir, as documented in engravings and photographs of the period, attests to an important architectural quality in the history of the image of the city that deserves to addressed in the right perceptual context. While the mills in Değirmendağı and Halkapınar determined the northern and southern borders of the city center in the early periods, the Gout mill, which was built on the coast in the 19th century, became one of the most important figures in the perception of the city from the sea, albeit for a short time. In addition to the effects of the mills on the perception of the city, the traces of the early reflections of the industrial revolution in the city carry them to an important point for the industrial history of the city. In this context, detection of the earliest steam engine in the Punta mill, which was built at the beginning of the 19th century, can be considered as an important point in terms of the city’s taking part in the history of the industrial revolution.İzmir kent merkezinde Osmanlı döneminde inşa edilen değirmenleri konu alan bu çalışmanın amacı literatürde çok fazla yer bulamamış bu yapıların görsel ve yazılı kaynaklardaki izlerinin bir araya getirerek tarihçelerini ortaya koymak ve kentin mimari algısına ve sanayileşme süreçlerindeki rollerine dair tespit ve yorumlar üretmektir.

The settlement of Sanayi-i Nefise School in Fındıklı Twin Palace (1926) and the change of its name to Academy of Fine Arts (1927) and its restructuring heralded a series of reforms. The renewal movement in architectural education, which first started with the introduction of Prof. Ernst A. Egli to the Architecture Branch (1927-36), assumed a different meaning after the well[1]known German architect Bruno Taut undertook this task (1936-38). The reform carried out by Ernst A. Egli under the influence of Technische Hochshules in Central Europe, considering the positive aspects of the Sanayi-i Nefise School architectural workshops modelled on Paris Beaux Arts architectural education, was developed with the valuable contribution of Bruno Taut and a training program specific to the country conditions and the institution was created in the Academy of Fine Arts Architecture Department. In the Taut period, which creates a developmental opportunity for all departments of the academy, the idea of establishing a relationship between the curriculum and space is clearly followed. It is known that a contemporary drawing workshop, which could not be created in the palace structure, became a reality as a complement to Taut’s educational idea in this period. This short article tries to follow the traces of the drawing hall known as the ‘Taut Studio’, which was added to the main space for the first classes of the Academy Architecture Department, through Bruno Taut’s Istanbul Journal (10.11.1936 - 13.12.1938). After Egli period, in addition to the problems that Taut needs to solve regarding the curriculum and staff, a frequently encountered and important issue in the diary is the necessity of making space arrangements in accordance with the renewed curriculum within the Fine Arts Academy Building. The first arrangements made in accordance with the existing curriculum in the wing of the building used by the Department of Architecture must have been made during the Egli period before it. The three-staged planning of the architecture program as preparation, project studios and diploma concourse necessitated a new arrangement in the use of space. The large drawing workshop, which was probably established for the first classes by combining the head sofa with the rooms around, is the first spatial traces of reformist thoughts. Taut imagined the workshop of the first classes in the idea of a modern workshop as an addition to the main building in the harem garden of the palace. He assigns Erich Zimmermann to do this. The drawings that Zimmermann prepared in a very short time are an indication of how important the workshop is for education. The Drawing Hall of the Architecture Branch, known as the Taut Atelier, is built as a rectangular planned addition to the harem garden by the Academy of Fine Arts, leaning against the high wall separating the harem gardens between the Academy of Fine Arts (Cemile Sultan Palace) and the Faculty of Letters (Münire Sultan Palace). The additional workshop, most likely opened in March or April 1938, houses several of the Academy’s exhibitions due to its feature of a large hall. The first exhibition to be opened was the painting exhibition of Leopold Levy. In the hall, the works of Bruno Taut and the student works of the Department of Sculpture under the direction of Rudolf Belling are exhibited at short intervals. Training continued in this period in the Taut Studio (Hall), which was not damaged in the great fire of 1948. The 1948 Diploma Projects Exhibition was opened in the Taut Hall, which can be reached by the roads opened inside the burning building. In the renovation of the building after the fire, the Taut Workshop was preserved and used as a training place until 1970. After the transfer of the Münire Sultan Palace, one of the double palace buildings, to the Academy, a project combining the two buildings was made by Sedad Hakkı Eldem, and during the implementation of the project, the structure known as Taut Workshop was demolished. Today, there is the main library building on the site of the workshop. Taut, who came to our country in 1936 and brought a new architectural perspective to the Ministry of National Education with his educational building projects in the two years he was in office until his death in 1938, played an important role in the architectural program of the Academy of Fine Arts in this short period of time gaining its unique identity that has survived to the present day with small changes. Taut Workshop, which is the result of the idea of integrating the relationship between space and curriculum, is intellectually transferred to the present day with the large Sofa Hall space referred to as ‘Orta Hol’ in the renovation of Sedad H. Eldem. Although the hall has lost its space, it preserves its place in the memory of the institution and its active role in education as a drawing workshop of the first classes today.

The second half of the 19th Century is a period in which the effects of Tanzimat reforms in the urban scale have taken place. The 6th Municipality Department which is the first municipality structured according to western urban management concepts, is an important example of that period. Surrounded by old city walls with its narrow streets and dense urban texture Galata, was having difficulty maintaining its trading function when the 6th Dept. Municipality was established in 1857 in Beyolu District (Galata, Tophane, Pera, Şişli). The area surrounded by the outer city walls of Galata was the residential area of various ethnic groups. The coastal region of Karaköy and Perşembe Pazarı District with a probably Genoesean grid plan was the commercial area. The need for broader streets and commercial buildings and rapidly developing commercial activity in this period had necessitated the redical restructuring of Karaköy coast which was one of the most important seaports of the Ottoman Empire. Finally, those functional transformations in the distrct have led to the development of residential areas around Galata Tower, towards Tünel Square and Taksim, and this was the area on which the new examples of Ottoman civil architecture had been raised on.Yüzyıl’ın ikinci yarısı Tanzimat reformlarının kent ölçeğinde ürünlerini aldığı bir dönemdir.

Unlike the common innovation diffusion theories, reverse innovation explores the innovations that emerge from developing countries and extend to developed countries. Such innovations are similar in some respects to disruptive innovations. Both of these innovation theories mainly rely on neglected users with low purchasing power and low expectations from the product, rather than the mainstream audience in developed countries. Turkey is among the developing countries accomodating the referred neglected users, therefore it is important to focus on the reverse innovetion concept. In this study, within the frame of disruptive innovation and innovation concepts, Turkey’s potential for reverse innovation and design’s role in this potential will he discussed through VOLKICAR example.

The presentation is of great importance for the development of sustainable perception of the historical environment, which is the future of the past, as well as to foster public awareness and engagement of conservation. The presentation aims to introduce, understand, examine, and adopt a historical building or environment. In this context, the presentation methods used are important to achieve the goal. They are used to create physical and virtual environments, which are used to strengthen the user’s connection with the historical environment and to increase the interaction with the presented object. Promoting the use of modern techniques within the scope of conservation charters, the acceleration of current technological developments, and the increasing digitalization in the architectural conservation discipline have led to the emergence of new presentation methods in the protection and conservation of historical environments. Aim of the study is to discuss with examples, how to use the presentation methods, which are the reflections of the striking innovations in technology in the discipline of conservation, especially in the presentation of the historical environment, in parallel with the rapid change of the world, to make a comparative evaluation and to develop suggestions. The scope of the article is limited to the use of technological presentation methods being developed in the context of Industry 4.0 in the discipline of conservation. These presentation methods are video projection mapping, virtual reality, augmented reality, H- BIM (Heritage Building Information Modelling), and 3D- GIS (three-dimensional geographic information systems). These methods were examined in terms of their technological developments in the historical process and their use in preservation of the historical environment. Then, the relationship among these presentation methods were studied with the comparative method and presented from a holistic point of view. Using the video projection method to project virtual images to the existing physical environment, to highlight historical buildings and building elements, or to make light plays to change the perception of audiences and to increase the attention of individuals, shows similarity with the purposes of using other visual presentation methods used in the historical environment. Although the video projection method differs from other methods in terms of the equipment used, it can be accepted as the pioneer of these methods in terms of technology and theory. Then, the presentation methods examined were evaluated on the criteria determined within the framework of the concept of presentation, which is considered as an act of preservation. The said criteria are; in situ/ ex-situ presentation capability, reliability of information, development potential, target users, sustainability, awareness, level of interaction, potential to present intangibles, remote access capability, compatibility/ integrated use, and level of detail. The principles developed in the theoretical framework of the presentation and the concepts emphasized in the international charters associated with the presentation in the field of preservation of the historical environment in the study were effective in determining these criteria. Thanks to the advances in technology with Industry 4.0, the efficiency of the presentation is increased by using these methods in an integrated manner. In this context, the interoperability of the related presentation methods in the conservation discipline is examined through examples. In the evaluation and conclusion part, the examined presentation methods were compared on the determined criteria and subjected to a scoring. Accordingly, the positive and negative aspects of each method in terms of the presentation and interpretation of the historical environment were evaluated comparatively. Suggestions have been developed on how these methods can be used more effectively in the presentation of the historical environment. Nowadays, technologies such as remote sensing, GPS, cloud, and the internet of things, which have developed with Industry 4.0, enable the development of the investigated presentation methods. In addition, thanks to the developing technology, the interoperability levels of these methods are increasing. While all these developments increase the effectiveness of presentation methods, they make the documentation and presentation of the historical environment more efficient. This is important not only for audiences but also for experts to work more effectively and for more comprehensive and rapid monitoring or inspection of the historical environment. In addition, the methods in question can be shaped according to the purpose of their use, to raise the level of awareness about the historical environment, from every segment of the society and every age group. Developing and using these methods more frequently today will enable the historical environment, which holds the past and the future together, to be accessible from anywhere and further strengthen the perception of preservation. The redesign of historical buildings for functional transformation is an issue that has been on the agenda of architectural practice for a long time. According to the conservation theory, which has been developing since the 19th century, the interventions to be applied to historical buildings are expected to preserve and highlight the historical context and reflect its own period by taking inspiration from the context. In other words, it is desired that the original qualities shape the new design, and similarly, the new design increases its value by giving new meanings to the original structures. However, the complexity of the relationships such as harmony and contrast to be established with historical/contextual data makes the redesign of historical buildings a very problematic process, and the architect must use an architectural strategy that directs his/her design to establish a two-way interaction and connection between the old and the new. One of these strategies, which is determined according to the relationship established between the tangible and intangible values of the host building and the elements that contain the requirements of the new function, is the insertion strategy. In this approach, which is one of the most notable approaches in contemporary interventions, the host structure remains largely unchanged, and the value of the area changes with the addition of new element(s) inspired by it. The new addition can be handled in a wide range between adapting to the original design and completely differentiating from the original structure, both approaches are accepted, provided that it does not harm the historical context. For this reason, the aim of the study is to investigate how unique features and contextual data should be used in the design process in the insertion strategy. In this context, firstly, the expansions in international documents containing principles regarding the interventions to historical structures are reviewed in chronological order, and the views of conservation theorists are examined. Then, the selected intervention design projects are examined and the diversity in intervention approaches is presented and evaluated in terms of conservation theory. Lastly, the success of the selected projects is analyzed within the framework of parameters related to preservation and design. The fact that the contextual features of historical buildings and the abstract concepts, that they contain together with concrete data are different from each other, make it impossible to deal with all of them with the same approach. Therefore, subjective approaches are needed in accordance with principled decisions. A dynamic connection can be established between the strong character of the existing building and the simple form of the contemporary intervention, or it can be an uncompromising approach that is opposite to the existing structure. However, in every design approach, freedom and creativity in design should not dominate the historical buildings and go beyond the scale of the original structure. The dominant design, scale, form, and material in the intervention reduces the value of the historic building. Every change to be made in the interior should consist of creative approaches that are not bound by rules and should comply with principled decisions. This study aims to be a resource to prevent the approaches that ignore the historical context because of the lack of these principles and documents about interior design processes of historical buildings. It is thought that this study will contribute to the development of awareness about contemporary interventions in the interior of historical buildings and will be a resource for researchers and architects who will work in such areas in the future, on the use and interpretation of contextual data as an input to the new design.

This study conveys the author’s experiences, who, regardless of their scale, perceived architectural spaces as the physical scenes of social life, with the students who started their architectural design education, between 2018 and2022. Having been inspired by the phenomenon of collective spaces, the author took it into focus through out these four academic years and encouraged the students todesign new collective spaces. Defined as public spaces allowing private use, private spaces allowing public use, and spaces between the spectrum of private and public allowing public and private use simultaneously, collective spaces have been mentioned for the first time at the end of the 20th century in the architectural discussion. Collective spaces of which the mixed-functioned buildings are a subcategory; contemporary architects define as microcosmoses. To enrich the typology and morphology of cities, contemporary architects emphasize the importance of designing new collective spaces. During the educational process, the author benefited from the phenomenon of collective spaces for adding new sources into architectural design education and developing new educational methods, which have shed light on the relations between society and individuals and on the unity of life and physical scenes. The educational process, in which the design site locations in urban, rural settlements or natural regions have been left to the choices of students, and the architectural programs have been created by students, it has been searched how social relations and physical features shape the daily life, and it has been asked how and what the collective spaces can contribute to the enrichment of the daily life. The educational methods gained by the contribution of the four sources, which are the works of art, the main elements of urban morphology, the theoretical sources on architectural space, and phenomenological journeys organized into nature, culture, and time, have expanded the scope of the phenomenon of collective spaces from the urban environments into the neighborhoods, towns, rural settlements, and natural areas. The expanded scope of the phenomenon of the collective space, and the design proposals of collective spaces created by the students at the end of each educational period between 2018 and2022, have shed light on the new design principles of collective spaces. Apart from the introduction and conclusion, this study includes three chapters. In the introduction, the inputs that motivate the educational strategy of the author have been clarified. In the first chapter, the definition of the phenomenon of collective space as made in the 20th century, the emphasis on the importance of collective spaces by contemporary architects and theorists, and the expanded scope of the phenomenon of collective space during the educational process between 2018 and 2022, are discussed. In the second chapter, the four sources that have contributed to the traceability and the design of collective spaces have been introduced. In the third chapter, students’ outputs which have shed light on new design principles of collective spaces have been shared. At the end of each four subsections of the third chapter, tables summarizing the educational objectives, the main and the specific sources, the applied methods, the representational tools, and the findings have been added. In the fourth chapter, observations and analytical studies deepened the collective space designs in formal and semantic contexts have been discussed. In the conclusion, the earnings regarding the design of collective spaces, gained from the main sources, the applied methods, and the creative outputs, which have been used throughout the design education process that lasted for five years, have been listed. Additionally, the achievements gained in the context of the phenomenon of space, the structure of the architectural design act, and the scope of the architectural discipline have been summarized. As the specific sources that have been chosenduring the educational process between 2018-2022, other sources/educational methods/creative outputs containing social, physiological, and emotional dimensions can be instrumental in expanding the scope of the phenomenon of collective spaces and their design principles, as well as in grasping the unity of life-physical space, the metaphysical dimension of the phenomenon of space, and the objective-subjective dimensions of the architectural design process. These all will support students in becoming more conscious regarding social and physical values and problems of their close or distanced environments and help them to design creative scenes for life stories containing diversity. This will remind the students, and specifically the ones, who will be starting their architectural design education, that they are students but also adults who have their own experiences, emotions, and ideas which are needed by others. Becoming aware of this fact will support them emotionally and give them the courage to express themselves.Bu çalışma her ölçekteki fizik mekanı; toplumsal yaşamın fiziksel sahnesi olarak algılayan yazarın mimari tasarım eğitimine başlayan öğrencileriyle deneyimlerini içermektedir. The construction industry has a dynamic structure that takes quick decisions. This dynamic business culture also includes design changes. The purpose of design changes is to improve the quality and efficiency of projects in general. However, problems due to design changes can reduce project performance, cause rework, increase time and cost, and decrease quality. In this study, it is aimed to determine the causes of design changes that cause time and cost increases, quality problems and rework in the Turkish construction sector and the effects of these reasons on project performance through field study. To achieve this aim, firstly, the Competition Projects arranged according to the competition regulations of the Turkish Chamber of Architects are listed. Then, the ones whose construction was completed were selected from these projects. The design changes and their reasons during the construction phases of these projects were investigated. Within the scope of the study, eight completed projects were selected. This study aims to compare an award-winning project with its built state. Interviews were held with the design teams of the constructed structures. Design changes in the construction processes were determined through the interviews. The reasons for the design changes obtained from the interviews were compared with the literature. The reasons for the design change overlap with the literature. These are listed as; Regulations and incomplete definitions in the specification, addition/omission of functions, slow decision-making, constantly changing demands, lack of coordination between stakeholders, deficiencies/inconsistencies in design, lack of knowledge in the design phase, inexperienced teams / insufficient contractor/lack of expert personnel, unexpected conditions, and workmanship. According to the findings obtained from the field study, it is seen that the four most important effects of a design change on project performance are quality, time, cost and rework. Design changes lead to rework and rebuilds. Changes made cause project delays and cost overruns. Other effects of design change affecting project performance are poor quality and workmanship. It has been seen that effective project communication should be ensured to control design changes. To achieve this, a common understanding of problems, sharing of experiences, team harmony and a culture of cooperation are required. Success factors that increase the efficiency of building design management are listed as communication, decision-making, information management, performance evaluation, planning, risk management and team management. These factors help to address the difficulties to be experienced throughout the project early in the design phase. Collaboration between the design and construction phases is required for the design to be more productive and efficient.İnşaat sektörünün hızlı karar alan dinamik bir yapısı vardır.
