Moji Port’s role in rice distribution after World War I: A case study of rail transport in Northern Kyushu
Get PDF本稿では、わが国で1910年代以降、本格的に進展にした交通体系の近代化（船舶輸送から鉄道輸送への転換）と産業構造の高度化が既存の物流と地域間の経済関係にいかなる変化をもたらしたのか、国鉄の門司鉄道局がまとめた貨物の輸送記録（門司鉄道局『年報』他）をもとに検証した。上述の記録には、米、麦、鮮魚、木材、石炭、綿糸、セメントなど貨物内容ごとに、門司鉄道局が管轄する全ての駅での発着トン数が示されている。したがってこれらのデータを用いすことで、多様な物資の移動状況を、精緻かつ経年的に明らかにすることができる。本稿ではこの内、米の発着状況を示すデータを利用し、主に筑紫平野（福岡県・佐賀県）と熊本平野（熊本県）で生産された米の地域間移動について考察した。departmental bulletin pape

Optimizing Informal Sector Contributions for Sustainable Plastic Waste Management: Systematic Approaches in Balikpapan City, Indonesia
Get PDF北九州市立大学博士(工学)This study examines the role of the informal waste sector in Balikpapan, Indonesia, within sustainable and circular waste management. Organized hierarchically from waste pickers to large-scale middlemen, the sector contributes to six waste management stages, supporting livelihoods and reducing emissions, but faces health, regulatory, and environmental challenges. Scenario simulations show Scenario C achieves the highest reductions—5.25 kg/ton CH₄ and 444.74 kg/ton CO₂—through improved collection, segregation, and recycling by informal actors. Performance assessment indicates small-scale middlemen deliver the best environmental and economic outcomes. Although operating outside formal systems, the sector indirectly supports municipal services and requires strategic integration via innovation hubs, incentives, and regulation. Public perception of plastic waste segregation, shaped by facility access, awareness, and informal actors’ role, explains 72% of behavioral variance. System dynamics modeling confirms that formalizing and incentivizing the sector under Moderate and Optimistic scenarios fosters equitable income growth and stronger environmental outcomes.doctoral thesi
Study on energy optimization and applicability of enhanced roof ventilation unit based on the venturi effect
Get PDF北九州市立大学博士(工学)This study investigates ventilation optimization in traditional rammed earth dwellings in Xichang, China, focusing on the Enhanced Roof Ventilation Unit (ERU) based on the Venturi effect. Field surveys, questionnaires, and on-site measurements provided data for an orthogonal experiment with seven factors and four levels, enabling systematic analysis of ERU performance under different structural parameters. The study determined the optimal ERU configuration, evaluated its adaptability under diverse wind conditions, and tested applicability across five climate zones in China. Further, it analyzed opening configurations—including window height, size, orientation, and door placement—ranking their influence on airflow, air age, ventilation efficiency, and thermal comfort, leading to an optimized scheme. Findings highlight both theoretical and practical contributions: advancing passive ventilation research, improving indoor air quality, and offering energy-efficient, sustainable design strategies for heritage dwellings, while addressing challenges of traditional living habits and biomass fuel use.doctoral thesi

Beyond the Institutionalised Familialism of Asian States: Family Complexities and Their Outcomes in Contemporary Japan
Get PDFThis essay offers a sociological inquiry about how the gendered, standard family model that continues to dominate Japanese society, along with its associated social norms, contributes to the growing realities and conflicts of "family complexity" in contemporary Japan. Historically, modern Japanese families have been defined by a rigid, standardised model that prescribes the roles of family members and their relationships. However, increasing individualisation within both family ad society has led to a greater plurality of family forms and idealised images of intimate relationships, As a result, contemporary Japan has witnessed rising rates of divorce, and non-legally defined relationships between couples and parents and children. Simultaneously, institutional support for such evolving family structures has been hampered. This essay examines the relationship between modern family norms and the modern state through the lens of the theory of "compressed modernity" in Asia and explores cross-national stepfamilies as a more radical model of diversified Japanese families.departmental bulletin pape
