identify the relationship between job satisfaction components (which are pay, promotion,
the work itself, supervision, & co-workers) and job performance among employees of
Tradewinds Group of Companies. The study was conducted among 115 respondents in
Tradewinds Group of Companies in Klang Valley. In this study, the whole population
method was used. The study revealed that there was a positive relationship between job
satisfaction components which were promotion, work itself, supervision and co-workers
except for pay towards employee job performance. There was a significant difference
between position and job performance. It proved that job satisfaction dimensions (pay,
promotion, work itself, supervision and co-workers) can contribute to 17.8 percent (%) to

Provision of digital libraries in enhancing competitive intelligence capabilities in Open Distance Learning (ODL) environment
Competition has become a driving force for innovation and entrepreneurship.
Competitive intelligence is a legitimate and necessary activity to increase institution’s
intelligence regardless of what industry it is in. In the academia industry the open distance
learning (ODL) education has been developing rapidly with national characteristics in different
parts of the world. To remain competitive in the light of challenging economic environment, open
distance learning (ODL) institution needs to capitalize on information and communication
technology as deployment technology. The purpose of this study is to investigate the areas of
intelligence practices (such as awareness, planning, collection, process and analysis) of the
various operations and support services units of one of the open distance learning (ODL)
institution in Malaysia. Due to privacy reason and to avoid any possible conflict of interest, the
name of the institution could not be disclosed. The researcher aims to identify, discuss and assess
the relevant parameters to gauge the knowledge sharing culture and competitive needs of the
institution. A primary survey was conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire administered
to the senior and middle-level management group of the institution’s various operations and
support services units. The findings and implications of the study are discussed. In line with the
explosion of information technology innovations, this study explored on the provision of digital
libraries to facilitate the storage, organization and knowledge dissemination of diverse
information as a productive way to assist the institution’s competitive business. Few strategic
ideas deemed as potential competitive capabilities are proposed as recommendations.(Abstract by author
Bachelor of Early Childhood Education Programme - Open University Malaysia Framework
This paper gives an overview of the design and development of Bachelor of Early Childhood Education
with Honours programme for delivery through open and distance learning methodology at the Open
University Malaysia. This programme is designed to meet the needs of persons interested in pursuing
careers in early childhood education who are currently employed in preschools, public schools, child care
centers or other childhood care facilities. It also aims to develop the specialist skills and knowledge
gained through the completion of Diploma in Early Childhood Education (DECE). This is in line with the
organization’s mission to widen access to quality education as well as to provide lifelong learning
opportunities by adopting and engaging learning environment at competitive and affordable cost. This
paper focuses on the curriculum development, the learning methodology, the practicum requirements and
planning, the courseware development, the e-learning delivery platform and on the programme quality
assurance. (Abstract by author

Assessment of online interaction pattern using the Q-4R framework
Online learning has merged into mainstream education as it allows learners to work at their
own pace, get personalized attention and interact in a structured manner. The role of
interaction is crucial in this process andvarious methods have been proposed in literature
(Marcelo and Perera, 2007) to analyze its role in online learning. The purpose of this paper
is to present findings on analysis of the linkages between interaction patterns, task given and
facilitation methods in an online learning environmentA model of interaction patterns called
Q-4R framework is proposed and, the experiences of 16students of the Master of
Instructional Design & Technology programme at the Open University Malaysia
werestudied. The flow of interactions in two comparable courses was explored for a period of
two months each and evaluated. The study has thrown significant conclusions that can help
us further understand the progression in interaction patterns over a period of time
inadvertently aiding lifelong learning. (Abstract by authors
Enculturation of lifelong learning : perspectives from the New Economics Model
Malaysia as a developing country has been in the middle-income trap since 1990s. Although
Malaysia has enjoyed strong growth in the past but its momentum has been significantly
slower since the 1997 Asian economic crisis. For the country to become a high-income nation
by 2020, Malaysia needs to have a critical mass of skilled and knowledge-based workers for
higher productivity and economic growth. The projected national population for age-group
cohort 15 years old and above are approximately 34.2 million by year 2020 and they
constitute the working population of Malaysia. In strategising and targeting skilled and
knowledge-based workforce for the new decade, lifelong learning (LLL) is an important
agenda in the 10th
Malaysia Plan (10MP) and recognised as the third pillar of human capital
development.10MP has succinctly mentioned that for the country to develop and retain a
first-world talent base, LLL will play an important role in upgrading the skills and
capabilities of the existing workforce. This paper will delve into the various LLL initiatives by
the Ministry of Higher Education in its strategic contributions towards achieving the nation’s
high-income objective. (Abstract by authors
Engaging the Open Distance Learners : a strategy to increase retention and improve graduation rates
This paper investigates the impact of the various interventions implemented by Open
University Malaysia, on the learners’ level of Engagement in the Online Community
developed through the interaction between the various participants; learners, instructors and
management staff of the university. The intensity of the Online Community which is the result
of the interventions was measured using four variables: Learner-Learner, Learner-Tutor,
Learner-Staff and Learner-Content interaction. The learners’ level of Engagement and
Commitment to stay in their programmes were also measured and a correlation was then
established. Data for the research were collected from 1550 undergraduate learners of
Open University Malaysia located throughout Malaysia using self-administered
questionnaires. Results obtained from 1116 respondents showed that there was a strong
correlation between Learner-Learner, Learner-Instructor, Learner-Staff, Learner-Content,
Engagement and Commitment to stay. Multiple regression analysis carried out showed that
the learners’ Engagement explains 72 percent of the variance of their Commitment to stay.
This study is important as it will help future researcher to develop a tool to measure
engagement of learners in the Online Community. (Abstract by author
Is lifelong learning an essence to economic growth?
Lifelong learning is continuous learning throughout the life of an individual. It can occur
through formal and informal means. Formal means are trainings, counselling, tutoring,
mentoring, apprenticeship, higher education etc. While for informal, it refers to experiences
gained etc. Malaysia view education as a vital agenda and priority platform to optimise the
potential of every citizen and put within reach the promise of the Wawasan 2020 objective, to
achieve zero illiterate rate by the year 2020 in Malaysia. This national endeavour will be in
nought if the education system fails to produce human capital that can thrive in meeting the
challenges of the 21st century innovation economy. It is believed that through proper and
sufficient training and education level, one would be able to perform well in his or her works.
According to Sachs (1995), learning new skills and acquiring new knowledge cannot be
restricted to formal educational settings. Effective learning needs to be integrated into the
work process. Training is often considered as a variable plugged into an economic model.
This paper aims to discuss the significance of lifelong learning to an economy using
economic growth theory of human capital and learning by doing. (Abstract by authors
Learners' evaluation of HTML modules
A major step taken by OUM, as part of the continuous effort to improve its learning system
and tools was the conversion of the print module, used primarily as resource for selfmanaged
learning, into the web-based HTML modules. This paper describes the research
which was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of OUM’s HTML modules from learners’
perspective. A set of questionnaire was prepared for the purpose. Subsequently a user
evaluation survey was administered at OUM’s various learning centres. The analyses of the
study indicate that HTML modules are generally well accepted by the learners. A t-test
conducted indicates that the male learners rated the HTML modules higher than the female
learners. Another Pearson correlation test shows that the ICT competency of the users has
little effect on their perceived quality of the HTML modules, even though the modules are
basically computer-based. Recommendations for improvements are proposed. (Abstract by authors
