Quality assurance in Open and Distance learning : strategies and apporoaches from the perspective of Open University Malaysia
Application of Cloud Computing in Teaching and Learning in a Post Graduate program at Open University Malaysia
Technology evolvement has a high impact to teaching and learning strategies. Virtualization in computing technology has widened user's perspective on communication. Communication seems to be one of the important factors that contribute to the effectiveness of content delivery in terms of production of quality learning outcomes. Users who actively involve in communication either asynchronously or synchronously become constructive and critical by arousing curiosity which in turn will lead to students becoming more innovative and independent. The use of cloud computing in teaching and learning have given advantage to learners in constructing their own content. The aim of this study is to observe and examine the pattern of communication between eight postgraduate students in Master of Instructional Design and Technology (MIDT) program. This study also aims to clarify the status of teaching and learning activities in cloud computing in terms of the models and approach. The simulated learning environment embedded into cloud computing strategies is design according to the working definition. The student undergoes the simulated learning environment. The pattern of communication between students is studied and analyzed to gain insight on the number of communication between student and student, and between student and lecturer. The pattern will also reveal the number of interaction between nodes through MyVLE, Edmodo, Skype and email. This study will report the quality of communication as part of the learning outcome derived from the learning approach. It will also report the seriousness of the students and lecturer in participating in online discussion. The communication outcomes will lead to the synthesis of all information provided in simulated learning environment (SLE) embedded in cloud learning environment (CLE). The result of this study will assist the instructor in improving the delivery platform, specifically on selecting the appropriate application and strategizing the teaching method through modeling through technology. Quality Education in ODL: Evidence from the Tracer Study
The impact of the many initiatives undertaken by OUM to provide learning accessibilities through various
aspects must be assessed from the perspective of its learners. Feedback through the tracer study conducted to
learners who will be graduating is appropriate because they have gone through the entire cycle of learning. The
feedback allows OUM to assess its performance in the provision of services to its learners. An online tracer
study conducted by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Malaysia, in collaboration with all local universities,
colleges and polytechnics was carried out via a set of standard questionnaire is, in part, to evaluate the responses
from Malaysian graduates on the performance of their alma maters. This paper presents the results of the study
conducted on a total of 4911 respondents of the 2013 batch of OUM graduates. It is gratifying to note that 2013
OUM graduates are generally satisfied with the services provided by the university and that the level of
satisfaction in almost all aspects have improved over the past five years. The aspects covered in this study
include: curriculum, assessment system, career guidance, teaching and learning, facilities, and knowledge and
skills. In another aspect, the results showed that OUM study programmes have had a high impact on the holistic
development of graduates, in terms of self-readiness such as maturity, reliance and teamwork. On comparing the
2013 data with that of the 2008 data, the result showed that there are significant improvements in the graduates’
satisfaction on all aspects, except for the English language skills. This implies that the many initiatives that have
been instituted over the last five years towards improving the quality of education has paid off as evidenced by
the positive differences in satisfaction in the items covered in this tracer study. (Abstract by authors
Relationship-based student loyalty model in an open distance learning institution
The task of retaining students in an open and distance learning (ODL) higher education institutions (HEIs) represents a huge challenge. This has led to extensive research in this area. Several retention models have been explored and many intervention efforts have been attempted. The relationship quality-based student loyalty (RQSL) model, borrowed from marketing has been added to the repertoire of research approaches. It has been found to be appealing and well-suited for adoption by HEIs based on the premise that student relationship is the cornerstone of student loyalty. This study attempts to explore the use of this approach in a private ODL institution. A cross-sectional survey involving 2,300 student respondents was adopted and administered in September 2011. The results indicate that service quality, emotional commitment and students’ trust had positive impact on student loyalty. The step-wise regression analysis showed that the highest impact on student loyalty is due to emotional commitment, followed by service quality and trust. However, in terms of the total impact on student loyalty, the highest is due to service quality, followed by emotional commitment and trust. Based on the findings of this preliminary study, the institution can adopt three strategic approaches; service quality-based, an emotional commitment-based, and trust-based initiatives to increase the level of student loyalty. It is noted that student loyalty is not limited to the time that the student spends in the university; the advantages of student loyalty are probably greatest after they have graduated where they could contribute positively via financial support, word-of-mouth promotion and through some form of cooperation to the institution.
Abdullah, 2012). (Abstract by author

This action research examines the online Problem based learning (PBL) designed for one of the courses in the Bachelor of
Project and Facility Management offered at Open University Malaysia. The main aim of this study was to explore the
constraints of implementing PBL and to look for possible interventions during class tutorial sessions. Within the
constraints of students’ attendance and the limitation of time, this project was conducted and monitored using the action
research methodology. The participants were students who attended the Facilities, Planning and Design course and they
were divided into two groups consisting of five members in each group. Observations and reflections from the students and
facilitator were recorded for ten weeks. At the end of the research, the facilitator developed the guidelines to introduce and
conduct the PBL environment for this particular course (Abstract by author
Challenges and Strategies in Engaging Adult Learners in the face-to-face facilitation in ODL
Engaging students in the classroom have become more crucial in education as the attention span of students
remain the same despite the increase in learning hours. Many studies have been done on this especially at the
primary and secondary level. However, there are less studies being done at the tertiary level of education. With
the advancement of technology and the recent increase in distance learning and on-line learning, the number of
hours dedicated to face-to-face teaching has been reduced. This means that learners have to absorb the same
amount of knowledge in lesser number of hours. This study is a conceptual paper based on a literature review
which focuses on how academicians can engage learners through various creative and innovative solutions. It
identifies the challenges faced by academicians in teaching adult learners and explores avenues that can be
pursued to engage these learners. At the end of the paper, strategies that have been successfully implemented in
OUM Business School are documented as a basis for future research efforts. It was concluded that all tutors and
facilitators should be committed to the development of innovation and creativity in the learning environment in
order to engage learners in the classroom. This would ensure that quality in teaching and learning is achieved
