Factors Contributing To Medication Errors And Failure To Report Errors Among U29 Nurses In Hospital University Sains Malaysia

    No full text
This quantitative-oriented research was conducted to identify factors that contributed to errors in dispensing medication among nurses and to understand why nurses did not report their errors in dispensing. In this study a total of 284 U29 nurses participated in focusing on factors contributing to medication errors and failure to report the errors. In this study, analysis of the data collected was made in two sections; dispensing errors and failure to report the errors in giving medication. According to Evans et al. (2006) although nurses may not admit directly to such errors, they expressed their perceptions towards situations described in the questionnaire items as contributing to medication errors among nurses. Almost all in the sample of 284 chose not to report medication errors because they could not identify the cause of dispensing errors; other nurses perceived that the individual involved is not competent in performing the task. Other reasons include fear that the action will be exposed by the management, to avoid publicity from the media, and there is no difference in reporting or not reporting the medication errors. This study was done not only for exploring factors of medication errors; it also aspires to identify problems that arise in hospital services and in order to maintain the quality of health care. The management should consider the impact of medication errors and failure to report medication errors on the nursing profession and quality image of the hospital

Using a Choice Experiment (CE) in an Open and Distance Learning (ODL) Context in Malaysia

    No full text
There are approximately 65 private higher education providers in Malaysia as of February 2015. There are several institutions that offer the open and distance learning (ODL) mode as their primary teaching and learning pedagogy (Malaysian Qualifications Agency [MQA], 2015). The flexibility of ODL mode has caused significant competition in the education industry. This is because a high level of flexibility meets the needs of adult learners, as they tend to face more obstacles in their quest for education; they have other commitments in life, such as their family and career. The aim of this study is to investigate the attributes that are mostly valued by ODL learners when choosing an ODL higher education institution in Malaysia and to obtain the marginal value of the selected attributes via the consumers' willingness-to-pay (WTP) price. Although there have been studies on the attributes that influence a student's choice of university, none have used choice experiment (CE) theory, along with WTP measurement and basic multinomial logit (MNL) model, to examine such attributes. The sample for this study was 320 persons who agreed to participate in face-to-face interviews. The results indicated that respondents have the highest WTP when an institution's reputation increases from less satisfactory to satisfactory level (RM1,907.75 to RM1,980.20 per semester) based on basic MNL model. It indicates the respondents in this study placed the highest value on the reputation of the education institutions. The results help ODL education institutions to introduce the right marketing strategy and educational services to influence the selection of education provider and to provide appropriate facilities and services to ODL learners in Malaysia in order to enhance its sustainability in the highly competitive education industry. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the nurses' level of burnout and identify the factors that influence it. Burnout, one such stress-related outcome, has been conceptualised as a multidimensional construct consisting of emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and reduced personal accomplishment. Items adapted and translated from Maslach Burnout Inventory were used to collect data from 60 respondents. Among the respondents, 5.0% showed a high level of Emotional Exhaustion while 95.0% were at the moderate and mild level. Respondents with a high level of Depersonalization constitute 3.3% while 96.7% were at a moderate and mild level. Analysis show that 48.2% are at the high and moderate level for Personal Accomplishment while 51.7% is still at the lower level. Mean score for Personal Accomplishment 33.53 as oppose to Emotional Exhaustion 15.90 and Depersonalization 3.60 indicate a low level of burnout characteristic among the staff nurses. Correlation analysis suggest a significant but moderate relationship between Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization r = 0.62, p<0.05. Aconducive working environment was suggested as a way of improving quality of health care and to hinder burnout

Credit Card Practices, Attitudes, Problems And Risks Among Individuals: Empirical Findings Using Structural Equation Model

    No full text
Credit card unhealthy practices have been a world-wide challenge in the global business environment for years. The effect of default hits not only the victim, but also the banks, credit card companies and merchants. The objective of this paper is to examine the relationship amongst practices, attitudes, problems and risks related to credit card usage. A literature review on prior studies has indicated that there is a methodological gap to be filled in this area. Novelty is achieved by the usage of partial least square (PLS) model in answering the hypotheses. Multilevel method analysis using PLS allows for efficiency, convergence and power when investigating the causal effects in the two-level data, ensuring that the support for hypothesis is much more acceptable. Out of the 150 total survey questionnaires distributed, 114 were returned and used. Face to face data collection method was employed to enhance the response rate. Prior to collecting the data, the content of the survey questionnaire was reviewed by a content expert to enhance the understandability of the instrument. Mean analysis was performed to describe the profile of respondents. Mann Whitney test reports (p = 0.71) indicated that bias did not exist in this study, whereas Kolmogorov-Smirnov test in this paper showed (p > 0.05) proving normality in the data distribution. Convergent validity (average variance extracted > 0.50; composite reliability > 0.80) was also reported prior to presenting the final model. There is a relationship between problem, reason and risks related to credit card usage (p < 0.01). Missing bill payment due dates and paying the debts late could lead to many risks to the users. Poor financing habits can jeopardise relationships and can lead people to spend more than what is necessary. However, the relationship between the reason of using credit cards and the risk related to it is not significant (p = 0.13). Future researchers are suggested to include moderating and mediating factors in the structural equation model to narrow down the methodological gap available in this area. [ABSTRACT BY AUTHORS

Generation X and Purchase Intention Toward Green Cosmetic and Skin Care Products

    No full text
The significant increase of green awareness among people throughout the world has created tremendous implications on the cosmetics industry. However, in Malaysia, the market for green cosmetics and skin care is still in its infancy. Consequently, this study had been undertaken to investigate generation X‘s behavior in purchasing green products which is crucial since they form one of the biggest target groups among cosmetic users. Thus, this study examines Malaysia’s Generation X consumers’ purchasing intention for green cosmetics and skin care products. Specifically, the current study examines the relationship of psychological factors of consumer values i.e. health consciousness, environmental consciousness, self-image consciousness among generation X’s attitude towards purchase intention of green cosmetics and green skin care in Malaysia. The results of the regression analyses showed that health consciousness has significant relationship with attitude towards the purchasing of green cosmetics and skin care products. However, the reverse was found on environmental consciousness and self image that indicated no relationship to purchase intension. Consequently, attitude factor was found to mediate the relationship between consumer values and green purchase intention. In addition, the findings from the analyses also revealed that past purchase experience was the most significant determinant to purchase intention. This study implies that producers of green products must be able to convey their green message to the intended target market, especially when these groups are actively engaged in environmental practices and issues. Future researches should consider a nationwide survey covering samples from other generation groups as well as be gender based which would be more significant in making a generalization [ABSTRACT BY AUTHORS

Development of Domain Ontology for a Semantic Online Forum

    No full text
Ontology has the potential to structure domain knowledge and formally represent the knowledge in a more precise, explicit, consensusbased and meaningful manner. However, to our knowledge, none have made an effort to integrate forum discussion with subject module knowledge into ontologies to enhance learning of the subject taught. As such, it is the interest of this paper to reuse, classify, integrate and semantically organize both of this knowledge by means of ontological structure. Thus, detail of the ontology development process is presented consisting of two main phases: Namely knowledge acquisition (from both the subject module and forum discussion) and knowledge modeling. The resulting ontology was evaluated via the use of a prototype, a concept annotation task and questionnaires. Findings indicate that the proposed ontology model is sufficient to accommodate learning needs according to the assessment of experts. (Abstract by authors

    A Quality Framework for OER

    Get PDF
Quality in teaching and learning has always attracted the attention of policy makers, educators, parents and students. It is the bedrock of a quality output-the student and it marks the effectiveness and efficiency of the provider. The quality of teaching and learning is constantly questioned due to many reasons, some of which could be skills and knowledge of the teaching and learning process, the competency of the educator in the content knowledge, the passion and attitude of the educator vis-à-vis the expectations of students. This phenomenon has become more urgent as the availability of free electronic learning resources is equated to higher quality. As a teacher and also an e-learning educator, i find the sharing of open educational resources or OERs freely ( as per CC License) a right move towards increasing the quality of learning and hence democratization of education. However there seems to be some concerns as per the quality of the OERs. After all the whole idea of the OERs apart from “sharing resources freely and making an institutional mark” is also to ensure we overcome the constantly nudging issue of ineffective learning. Now that OERs have been created, it is important to evaluate the effectiveness of these OERs. This paper will first look at some crucial definitions, followed by a review of available efforts on quality of OERs and end with some case studies and suggestions. (Abstract by authors
