Weight Loss Exercise: Knowledge, Attitudes And Practices Among Nursing Students In Kuala Terengganu Nursing College
Exercise is an important practice in leading a healthy lifestyle. However, recently the percentage of Malaysians who practice healthy lifestyle has decreased and the rate of overweight or obesity is increasing. This study aims to explore the knowledge, attitudes and practices of exercise among nursing college students. Questionnaires were used as a research instrument and distributed to Kuala Terengganu Nursing Collage students consisting of 281 students, ranging from year 1 to year 3 in semester II. Data collection was carried out within two weeks. The results of this study showed that almost 66.9% of trainees chose aerobic exercise as their favorite exercise. This form of exercise is good for strength and durability of the cardiovascular. Almost 90.4% of them did exercises together with their friends. From the results, their coach had a relatively good level of knowledge about exercise. The majority of students have a positive attitude towards exercise. There is a relationship between knowledge and their value of exercise. Age is correlated with knowledge, meaning that the older the person the more knowledgeable they are on the benefits of exercise. Age and semester of study showed moderate correlation of 0.525 with awareness of exercises to increase stamina and strength of the body's defenses. (Abstract by authors

Learning Community for Postgraduate Learners in the Final Year Project Course of Open University Malaysia
The learning community approach offers a promising way to facilitate the
learning process of postgraduate learners in their final year project course at
the Open University Malaysia. This is important because the final project
requires a substantial amount of commitment and needs to be carried out
independently. Moreover, students often experience challenges that delay or
prevent them from completing their projects. Therefore, integrating a learning
community into the course to address administrative or academic matters with
peers and faculty members assists progression and completion. The purpose
of this study was to gain insight into the learning community used by
postgraduate learners for the final year project course. A survey was
administered to 52 postgraduate learners and observation of the community
site was conducted. The results were positive and encouraging, especially
when learners tried to make sense of the learning community in order to be
connected and motivated, to receive continuous support and to learn the
required knowledge for the course. (Abstract by author
A Study of Teaching and Learning Factors Affecting Student's Achievement in Science
Science is a key factor for a country’s development. Students need to acquire 21st century skills and develop competencies to compete globally. Unfortunately, evidence had shown that Malaysian 15-year-old students performed poorly in science in international comparative studies. This study was undertaken to investigate the factors influencing science achievement among Form 2 or 14-year-old students from four states and two Wilayah Persekutuan in Malaysia. The objective was to examine the relationships between student factors, teacher factors and classroom instructions with students’ science achievement. This study employed a cross-sectional survey research design to answer the research questions and address the research objectives. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) techniques were used to develop models to assess various research questions. Stratified random sampling technique was used to obtain the samples from 846 secondary schools. A total of 2,867 valid responses out of 2,869 was achieved, yielding a final response rate of 99.93%. The results concluded that various student-level factors, teacher-level factors and classroom instruction influenced students’ science achievement. The results confirmed that 46% of the variance in students’ science achievement was contributed by differences across teacher-level variables. The results also confirmed that 54% of the variance in students’ science achievement was contributed by differences across student-level variables. The results confirmed that there were three teachers’ classroom instructional factors which contributed to the variance in students’ science achievement, i.e. (i) effective and engaged science instruction together with teacher quality (49.98%); (ii) inquiry-based science instruction (7.59%); (iii) integration of ICT into teaching and learning (5.20%). The results confirmed that there was a significant relationship between students’ IQ and their science achievement. The results also confirmed that higher-order thinking skills alone did not have a significant relationship with students’ science achievement. However, when higher order thinking skills, attitude towards science and students’ IQ were analyzed together, these variables jointly contributed 54% of the variance in students’ science achievement. In addition, the results confirmed that ICT-related variable, i.e. (i) students’ internet broadband access at home, mediated the relationship between frequency of students using their computers at home for science learning and their science achievement. However, another ICT related variable, i.e. (ii) frequency the science teachers used the computer laboratories to teach science, did not mediate the relationship between frequency of students using their computers at home for science learning and their science achievement. Low Back Pain Among Registered Nurses In Surgical Unit At Raja Perempuan Zainab (RPZ) Ii Hospital, Kota Bharu, Kelantan
Low back pain is a common occupational health issue especially among nurses that leads to suffering, disability and days of work lost that affect the continuity and quality of patients care. This study aims to determine prevalence of low back pain among registered nurse at Surgical Unit in RPZ II Hospital and identify the associated factors. It is a cross-sectional study that used a self-administered questionnaire to collect the data among a convenience sample of 60 nurses.
Data was analyzed using Pearson Chi-Square. Majority of them were aged 31 to 40 years (53.3%), Malays (91.5%), married (84.6%), had working experience from 11 to 15 years (50.8%), had formal manual handling training (64.9%) and are overweight(58.3%). The prevalence of low back pain was 63.8%. The study revealed statistical significance for race (p=0.002), number of patients they have to handle (p=0.005), satisfaction with working environment (p=0.007) and emotional and social problems (p=0.007, p=0.038, respectively
Pengetahuan, kesediaan dan amalan Pentaksiran Berasaskan Sekolah (PBS) dalam kalangan guru pendidikan jasmani sekolah rendah
Transformasi dalam pentaksiran yang berlaku membuka ruang perbincangan yang
luas dari segi pengetahuan, kesediaan dan amalan guru sebagai pelaksana.
Pentaksiran Berasaskan Sekolah (PBS) merupakan perubahan dalam penilaian
pendidikan. Oleh itu, kajian ini menyumbang dapatan hubungan antara tahap
pengetahuan, kesediaan dan amalan Pentaksiran Berasaskan Sekolah (PBS)
berdasarkan demografi terpilih dalam kalangan guru Pendidikan Jasmani sekolah
rendah. Kajian kuantitatif berbentuk tinjauan ini menggunakan soal selidik yang telah
diadaptasi daripada instrumen asal iaitu aspek pengetahuan, kesediaan dan amalan
guru sebagai pemboleh ubah bersandar. Responden kajian dipilih secara persampelan
kluster daripada senarai nama sekolah rendah. Soal selidik yang diserahkan mendapati
kadar pulangan sebanyak 81.3% iaitu seramai 358 orang guru Pendidikan Jasmani
daripada 77 buah sekolah rendah di daerah Kota Bharu. Pengetahuan, kesediaan dan
amalan menunjukkan min yang tinggi dalam melaksanakan PBS di sekolah.
Hubungan pengetahuan dengan opsyen, pengalaman mengajar adalah tidak signifikan,
begitu juga kesediaan dan amalan dengan jantina, taraf akademik, kursus dan lokasi
sekolah. Hubungan yang kuat antara pengetahuan, kesediaan dengan amalan
menjelaskan bahawa kesan kursus yang dihadiri dan taraf akademik juga memberi
sumbangan kepada amalan PBS di sekolah-sekolah. Ujian-t menunjukkan tiada
perbezaan signifikan antara pengetahuan, kesediaan dan amalan dengan jantina dan
yang mengikuti kursus. Hasil ujian ANOVA sehala mendapati tiada perbezaan
signifikan antara pengetahuan dan amalan dengan taraf akademik, pengalaman
mengajar dan lokasi sekolah tetapi kesediaan guru menunjukkan terdapat perbezaan
signifikan dengan taraf akademik dan yang mengikuti kursus. Oleh itu, keseluruhan
dapatan kajian menjelaskan tentang kepentingan pengetahuan, kesediaan dan amalan
dalam meningkatkan pengoperasian guru melaksanakan PBS masa kini. [Abstract by author
Developing Student Model for Intelligent Tutoring System
The effectiveness of an e-learning environment mainly encompasses on how efficiently the tutor presents the
learning content to the candidate based on their learning capability. It is therefore inevitable for the teaching
community to understand the learning style of their students and to cater for the needs of their students. One
such system that can cater to the needs of the students is the Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS). To overcome
the challenges faced by the teachers and to cater to the needs of their students, e-learning experts in recent times
have focused in Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS). There is sufficient literature that suggested that meaningful,
constructive and adaptive feedback is the essential feature of ITSs, and it is such feedback that helps students
achieve strong learning gains. At the same time, in an ITS, it is the student model that plays a main role in
planning the training path, supplying feedback information to the pedagogical module of the system. Added to
it, the student model is the preliminary component, which stores the information to the specific individual
learner. In this study, Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) was administered to capture the student ability with
respect to three levels of difficulty, namely, low, medium and high in Physics domain to train the neural
network. Further, neural network and psychometric analysis were used for understanding the student
characteristic and determining the student’s classification with respect to their ability. Thus, this study focused
on developing a student model by using the Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ) for integrating it with an ITS
by applying the neural network and psychometric analysis. The findings of this research showed that even
though the linear regression between real test scores and that of the Final exam scores were marginally weak
(37%), still the success of the student classification to the extent of 80 percent (79.8%) makes this student model
a good fit for clustering students in groups according to their common characteristics. This finding is in line
with that of the findings discussed in the literature review of this study. Further, the outcome of this research is
most likely to generate a new dimension for cluster based student modelling approaches for an online learning
environment that uses aptitude tests (MCQ’s) for learners using ITS. The use of psychometric analysis and
neural network for student classification makes this study unique towards the development of a new student
model for ITS in supporting online learning. Therefore, the student model developed in this study seems to be
a good model fit for all those who wish to infuse aptitude test based student modelling approach in an ITS

Informal Leadership Learning on the Journey to Headship: A Case Study of National Professional Qualification for Headship Participants in Malaysia
The current focus on school leader preparation around the world is based on the belief that school leaders make a difference in both effectiveness and efficiency of schooling. This study is part of an evaluative case study on the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) programme in Malaysia. It seeks to investigate the perceptions of ten incumbent secondary school principals who are graduates of the NPQH programme on the informal leadership learning they acquired from the time they graduated to the roles they played as principals. The study investigated informal leadership learning in the professional setting at school, professional setting outside school as well as leadership learning outside the professional setting. The findings of this qualitative inquiry point towards a great deal of informal leadership learning in the professional setting at school. Whilst informal leadership learning in the professional setting outside of school was reportedly derived from the active role played by the respondents themselves, very little leadership learning was acquired outside the professional setting. The implication of this study for the preparation of school heads in Malaysia is discussed and proposals made towards optimising the benefits of informal leadership learning for aspiring heads.
