“Make Sense of It!”: The Role of Mediation and Perceived-Benefit in an Online Learning Environment

The use of online learning platforms has significantly influenced critical understanding on the role of mediation and perceived-benefit. Those who are involved in an online learning environment have to expend effort to make sense of their virtual interaction. The goal in any online learning environment is to achieve authentic interaction. This conceptual research proposes two pillars in the rationalisation of virtual interaction. First, the existence of mediation should be based on its function as a medium to trigger active participation. Within this perspective the concept of involvement is explored. Second, there should be a mechanism to develop perceived-benefit orientation through which all parties involved in the interaction can achieve collective agreement, i.e. they can satisfy their own interests. Some practical implications are also discussed

The purpose of this study is to investigate the barriers and challenges in the implementation of ISO 9001:2015 QMS in the Malaysian construction company. A random sample of 100 workers in construction companies in Malaysia has been used to identify these factors in a structured survey, resulting in a response rate of 49%. The measurement model's reliability and validity were evaluated using exploratory and conformity factor analysis. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to investigate the relationships between the latent constructs. The results show that surveyed construction companies implemented ISO 9001 QMS primarily for company performance and encountered numerous challenges during the implementation process. Furthermore, findings highlighted the importance of effective communication and organizational learning in enhancing company performance in construction organizations. According to the findings, these factors have a significant impact on companies in terms of effective communication, organizational learning, and company performance in construction organizations, at 95% confidence interval (p<0.05). The subjective data was based on individuals from a variety of organizations being surveyed, and the convenience sampling method was used due to the physical limitations from the most recent study. Previously, different researchers in different countries led studies on the barriers and challenges to ISO 9001 QMS implementation in particular. A few of these studies and research have been conducted in Malaysian construction firms. This study on the challenges to ISO 9001 QMS implementation in Malaysian construction companies will aid in the completion of the interlocking of difficulties encountered by organizations when implementing and retain the ISO 9001 certification. The results of this research provide Malaysian construction companies with a theoretical and practical understanding of the factors that challenge the company performance companies to retain ISO 9001 QMS certification. These challenges should be overcome by construction companies to achieve successful implementation and better performance of QMS. (Abstract by author

Introduction: Risky sexual behavior is defined as a behavior that increases one’s risk of contracting or being infected by sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and experiencing unintended pregnancies. This study examined the relationship between religiosity and risky sexual behavior among adolescents in the state of Sarawak, Malaysia. Methods: The inclusion criteria included 1,146 unmarried adolescents aged between 16 and 19 years, whereby they answered a validated self-administered questionnaire using the modified Religion Scale and Risky Sexual Behavior – Unsafe Sex Scale. The analysis was restricted to respondents who reported to have had sex. Results: Overall, the response rate recorded 95% (n=1,086), whereby the prevalence of respondents who reported that they have had sex was 9.5%, n=103 (71 males, 32 females, mean age 17.82). Descriptive results further showed that the prevalence of those who have had sex for male and female were 6.53% and 2.94%, respectively. The earliest sexual debut was revealed to be at 13 years of age. Moreover, bivariate analyses indicated a significant and negative correlation between religious practice and risky sexual behavior (r= -.23; p<.05). Conclusion: The study revealed that religious adolescents are more likely to avoid risky sexual behavior. This means that religious practice may become a potential protective factor in influencing adolescents to avoid risky sexual behaviors. (Abstract by authors

Learning styles play an important role in explaining the way a student masters the lessons they have learned in school. This study aims to review the dimensions of learning styles of students with attention deficithyperactivity disorder in Malaysia. The study is believed to provide information about the learning styles of students with attention deficithyperactivity disorder in the Integration Programme. This will help the Special Education teachers to prepare and plan effective ways of teaching that can be tailored to students’ learning styles. Findings of the survey showed that learning styles of students with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder are more likely to reflect elements of design, motivation, learning in pairs, kinaesthetic elements and impulsive elements. The findings of this study also indicated that the emotional element in the learning styles of these students is more dominant, followed by perceptual, psychological and environmental elements. Interviews with Special Education teachers showed that students with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder are more prone to the temperature element, either hot or freezing cold, or the noise element. In addition, the findings also revealed that a number of students with attention deficithyperactivity disorder tend to be more aggressive when learning activities involved colourful visuals. It was found that the students prefer to learn in pairs and are able to learn better in the morning and become more distracted when studying in the afternoon. The learning style of students with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder is multidimensional, interconnected and interdependent with each other
