“Do We Think Alike?” – Experts’ Views on the Aesthetic Perception of Pua Kumbu Design Motifs’ Visual Complexity

Aesthetic perceptions are influenced by the formal aspects and visual substance of art, which prompt individuals to respond and reconsider their perspective. The purpose of this study was to evaluate experts’ aesthetic perceptions of the complexity of Pua Kumbu design motifs. The complexity of the symbols found in the design motifs contributes to a lack of interest in understanding the meanings of these motifs, particularly among the younger generation. Therefore, through the utilization of interviews with structured and unstructured questions, a qualitative technique was employed to investigate the experts’ aesthetic perception of the visual complexity of the design motifs. The findings provide a fundamental understanding and emphasize the importance of preserving traditional human values, with the hope that hand weaving, as a valuable heritage, will endure and maintain its significance in the long term

Heuristic Evaluation of Play4Fit Health and Fitness App: A Comparison Between Experts and Novices Evaluators

Heuristic evaluation (HE) can be used to effectively identify usability issues in various interfaces. However, it has not been widely used in evaluating smartphone apps, especially in the health and fitness domain. One reason is the lack of HCI experts, which makes incorporating HE into the design process difficult. This paper presents the results of a study that compared HE performed by three HCI experts and three novices in evaluating a gamification app for health and fitness on a smartphone. The study used Smartphone Mobile Application heuRisTics (SMART), which focuses on smartphone apps, and a severity rating scale to determine the severity of the usability issues. These issues were mapped to the SMART heuristic. The findings indicate that novices may identify usability issues that the experts overlooked. While the experts identified eighteen usability issues, the novices found only four; however, the novice’s findings may be used as a substitute for HE when experts are unavailable. Both experts and novices identified two similar usability issues, but their severity ratings differed. One possible solution to address the lack of usability issues identified by novices in HE is to use more novices instead of experts in the evaluation process

Preserving Cultural Identity of Angklung Paglak through Visual Identity-based Approach

Angklung Paglak, a traditional musical instrument rooted in the rich cultural heritage of Kemiren Village, Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia, has played a pivotal role in entertaining farmers and expressing gratitude during the Great Harvest ceremonies. However, with the gradual decline of traditional harvest practices and the advent of modernization, the once vibrant Angklung Paglak tradition faces the risk of extinction. This study used the endogenous development theory to investigate the historical existence of Angklung Paglak and its evolution under the influence of tourism, emphasizing the structure of awareness, social relations, and practical techniques. In summary, by employing an ethnographic approach, the research involved real-world observations and interactions with local participants for one year to gain first-hand insight into the complex interplay between Angklung Paglak as a cultural asset and tourist attraction. The envisioned visual identity plays a significant role in fostering cultural continuity and unity, thus revitalizing and preserving Angklung Paglak’s significance within the community’s collective memory

The sacred space in Catholic Church buildings is intended for people to experience the mystery of God’s work of salvation and the epiphany of faith through light as one of its design elements. Light is seen as a significant aspect of Catholic teachings, representing divine manifestation through its symbolic function. The presence of artificial light in the worship room of the Holy Spirit Cathedral Denpasar was designed to accommodate all worship activities in conveying symbolic meanings. This study aimed to determine how artificial lighting through pragmatic, psychological, and symbolic functions is present in the prayer room. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The study results showed that the pragmatic function of light in the worship room of the Holy Spirit Cathedral Denpasar is considered a supporting aspect, while light with its psychological and symbolic functions is considered to be the main aspect, which is very influential in creating a spatial atmosphere that facilitates the religious experience of the churchgoer. Although the presence of artificial lighting in the worship room does not fulfill visual comfort, churchgoers consider the presence of artificial light to be able to accommodate the whole procession of worship activities

Familiarity and Overcoming of Uncanny Valley towards Computer-Generated Imagery Characters in Malaysian Film

Recently, the idea of the uncanny valley has drawn interest in robotics and other scientific circles and popular culture. Several scholars have discussed its implications and reactions towards human-like robots. However, only several previous studies examined overcoming the uncanny valley for realistic looking computer-generated actors in films and animation. This seeks to examine the familiarity of participants with the use of digital characters as actors. This paper explains how computer-generated imagery (CGI) was used to create actors in Malaysian films, the uncanny valley characteristics that may affect the audience’s attention. The researcher has chosen visual stimuli consisting of 1 genuine human character and 1 less humanlike subject. A self-administered survey (n = 127) with sample film footage and photos were delivered online via email and social networks to responders. Surprisingly, based on the data, the human resemblance of the humanlike characters was substantially higher than expected. This research concluded that the artificial CGI characters had higher perceived eeriness if the character was highly familiar to the audience. As a result, the digital actor’s replacement an impression of eeriness and disbelief, which confirms the uncanny valley theory

Hinggi and lau, as East Sumba woven fabrics, are inseparable from the cultural identity contained in the motifs. In order to understand this culture, the symbolic meanings of the various motifs of hinggi and lau need to be understood. This study examined the hinggi and lau motifs in terms of visual analysis (contour), meaning (content), and background (context). The research method used was systematic literature review by analyzing selected articles using the PRISMA method and going through the identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion stages with exclusion and inclusion criteria. The results showed that the physical form (contour) of hinggi and lau motifs varied, such as horse, chicken, human, and even skull motifs. These motifs represent meanings (content) related to life, death, and nature. All the meanings and motifs come from the Marapu belief system of East Sumba (context). Hinggi and lau, as cultural heritage, can adapt to change. Through this research, the authors recommend to relevant parties that the motives and functions of hinggi and lau themselves cannot be separated from the philosophical values contained therein, because they reflect the cultural identity of the people of East Sumba.

    Sur/Face: Self-Portrait in Porcelain

This paper discusses artworks that were created through a practice-led research approach. Considering practice-led research, the content of this paper encompasses every possible relation to the artworks, such as the perspective and statements of practice, considerations, thoughts behind the themes, observations, and interpretations of the creative process. All these aspects are grouped into two sections: the context of the practice and self-reflection on the practice. This research found that material-oriented and media-based approaches are not inseparable in ceramic art practice. Indeed, both perspectives are very valuable to understand the creative process as well as the appreciation of art works. Due to the creative process in art requiring non-linear thinking, the contents of this paper are not hierarchical in one direction. Instead, it can be conceived as offering multiple perspectives to understand the making process and the resulting artifact. In some way, this paper can be considered as a narrative style of writing, which is appropriate to reveal the creative process

Moein Mosaver and Hosein Behzad depicted beauty in the form of female figures using their unique ways of applying form, color, and content. The purpose of the present research was to study the way female figures are drawn in works of Mosaver and Behzad, compare them, and find out the relationship between them to finally answer the main research question, which concerns finding the similarities and differences between the works of both artists in form, color, and content. The method of the research was qualitative, the way the data was processed was descriptive-analytic, and the information was gathered through library sources. Regarding the time gap between the lives of saver and Behzad, it seems there should be similarities and differences between their miniatures. The results of the research showed that the composition in the works of both artists is mostly vertical and centralized, and the primary color blue and the secondary colors green, purple, and orange are mostly used. Foreign influences and the impact of the economic conditions are obvious in their works. Some of the differences between their works are the application of more primary and warm colors in Mosaver’s works and less variety of color in Behzad’s, while the latter’s lines are freer. Behzad also used perspective in his miniatures, and he preferred content over form

Globalization and Diversification of Interior Decoration Styles and Their Impact on Pakistani Handicrafts

With the gradual advancement of globalization, cultural values and traditional decorative practices as well as people’s lifestyles have changed through digital awareness. This has seriously affected the interior decoration industry and brought challenges to the local handicraft industry. Pakistan’s traditional handicraft is famous in the world, but the flow of imported machine-made products in Pakistan has led to a decline of Pakistan’s handicraft industry. This research investigated which factors are involved in home decoration and to see if these factors are advantageous for the handicraft industry or not. The use of handicraft decoration objects varies among people when they design their houses. Thus, study conducted a survey, which found several factors that Pakistani people emphasize in relation to home decoration. Currently, these factors do not benefit the handicraft industry as people pursue a modern lifestyle and they consider handicraft objects without innovation and design outdated. Interior decoration is seen as a major aspect of traditional Pakistani life and culture, with distinct cultural characteristics. Inspired by the latest way of thinking, an interior design first exists as a concept and is then realized through careful planning. It is meant to evoke a specific mood through the strategic use of color, space, and style. In Pakistan, home accessories are generally and strongly influenced by the current fashion in the end market, with many changes brought about by consumers’ purchasing patterns, designers’ and decorators’ styles, and economic conditions. Keeping up with constantly changing trends is the main challenge faced by the traditional handicraft industry sector. In many cases, craftspeople are disconnected from the end market, which is a challenge for them to be able to profit from their work

Remappings of a Region: Popular Map Images Around and Beyond ‘Southeast Asia’

Our spatial understandings and perceptions are augmented by media representations of spaces. Whilst maps are often studied within the academic fields of geography and art history, their discussion within the context of design and design history remains insufficient. This paper delves into the study of popular maps as cross-cultural design artefacts. This is done through case studies from the perspective of graphic communication, analyzing maps along their symbolic, narrative, and discursive interpretations as well as how they interplay with lived experiences. The period from 1930s to the 1960s saw several events that led to frequent remappings of geo-entities around the loose assemblage of nations that we now know as Southeast Asia, which included the birth of new nations and the forging of alliances. This process of repeated remappings enables an interesting study on the nature of maps, their instrumentalization, and their consumption
