EXAMINING NON-REPRESENTATION IN ENGINEERING NOTATIONS EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FOR THE ONTOLOGICAL INCOMPLETENESS OF THE FUNCTIONALLY-RATIONAL MODELLING PARADIGM

    Get PDF
The assumption that functionally rational notations can represent organisational spaces is central to engineering diagrammatical approaches in the delivery of advanced technology. This is reflected in a approach to notations which assumes objective, rationalistic ontologies. This paper opens the debate on research into notations and their relationship to sound method and socio-technical issues, suggesting that researchers need to rethink the ways in which the world is represented in engineering documentation, especially Requirements Engineering and Business Process Re-Engineering (BPRE). Empirical data from 9 companies and 48 people involved in manufacturing systems projects is presented which provides evidence for this position

Authentication Issues in Multi-Service Residential Access Networks

    Get PDF
Multi-service residential access networks allow residential customers to choose amongst a variety of service offerings, over a range of Core Networks and subject to user requirements such as QoS, mobility, cost and availability. These issues place requirements on authentication for network access, with a need for mutual authentication of the residential gateway (RG) to the local access point (LAP). The EU-IST project TORRENT is building a testbed providing for multi-service residential access networks in order to demonstrate the benefit of intelligent control, both for the customer and for the network operators and service providers. Adequate security measures are essential in order to secure access to the TORRENT system and services and for QoS provisioning to authorised users. This paper examines the authentication issues for the TORRENT system and presents a public key based authentication protocol for mutually authenticating the RG and the LAP

Quality of Service & Security in IP-Based Telecommunications Services

    No full text
The expansive convergence of IP and Telecommunications networks has highlighted the need for improved levels of QoS and Security over the new integrated network. It can be argued that computer communications networks today offer the highest potential degree of flexibility to meet the different requirements for the currently emerging applications, and therefore offer the best available technology on which the global telecommunications infrastructure could rely. The Internet is the uncontested prime candidate to form the core of this global infrastructure. Thus, a major part of convergence is the migration of existing telecommunications services to Internet Protocol (IP) platfo rms. Indeed, this is already happening, evidenced by the recent dramatic growth in Internet Telephony. The TSR Strand III funded Converge project is currently researching various solutions that claim to support the provision of IP QoS and Security in order to facilitate this service migration. This paper provides an interim report on the evaluation of a mixed IETF ISSLL IntServ and DiffServ architecture while also investigating security improvements through the use of various Authentication and encryption techniques

An Intelligent Integrated Approach to Multi-Service Residential Networks

    Get PDF
TORRENT is an EU-supported Framework 5 project, which is building a test bed for multi-service residential access networks. With this system, home users will be able to choose, transparently, the most appropriate core transport network and physical access interfaces, in order to meet their QoS expectations for particular ranges and combinations of services

An international focus on foster care with essays focus on foster care in Ireland, Scotland, Uganda, Australia and Canada

Managing User Involvement in the Early Stages of New Product Development (RIKON Group)

    Get PDF
The literature primarily focuses on two aspects of user involvement in the new product development process. Firstly, how new product development (NPD) relationships form and mature (Milson, Raj and Wilemon, 1996) and secondly the variables that impact on collaborative user involvement (Gruner and Homburg, 2000; Biemans, 1992). However, research on user participation is incomplete as little if any research has been devoted to determining how widespread or deeply embedded partnerships are in the NPD process. Additionally, managerial models for the involvement of users in the new product development process are scarce (Labahn and Krappel, 2000). The purpose of this exploratory investigation is to develop a conceptual model for the management of user involvement in the early stages of the NPD process

Federated Accounting Management System Architecture for Multimedia Service Usage Management

    Get PDF
This white paper reports on the progress and achievements that has been made in the area of federated accounting management since the beginning of FORM project. Thus far, an architecture of federated accounting management system and information model has been design and specified using UML and XML. These both aim to be both open and adaptable, and are based on concepts and recommendations laid down by TMForum (TeleManagement Forum), IPDR (IP Detail Record), OMG (Object Management Group) and IETF organisation. The functionality supported includes federated mediation, charges aggregation and settlement for the services provided, online bill querying. The architecture is composed of reusable components, which are being implemented using state-of-the-art technologies and being specified. As a part of FORM project, a prototype providing essential features of federated accounting management has been implemented, evaluated, and demonstrated

Self-esteem and health-risk behaviours: Is there a link?

    Get PDF
Rosenburg Self-esteem Scale scores from 7706 Irish young people, aged 10 to 17 years, were analysed in order to determine if self-esteem is related to incidence of smoking, drinking and drunkenness and drug use (among 15 to 17 year olds only). In addition, age, sex and social class differences in self-esteem scores are examined. There were no significant differences in self-esteem scores between those who had and had not tried smoking, those who drank regularly and those who did not, or those with different levels of smoking involvement and frequency of past drunkenness. Among 15 to 17 year olds there were no significant differences in self-esteem scores between those who had reported ever having used cannabis and those who did not. Self-esteem was significantly higher in males than in females, and higher in 10 to 12 than in 13 to17 year olds. It did not significantly differ across social class groupings. The results do not support the received wisdom that self-esteem confers a protective effect against involvement in the so-called health-risk behaviours

Value-Based Billing in a 3G IP Services Environment

    Get PDF
The proliferation of IP-based services has resulted in a paradigm shift away from traditional flat-rat, single service billing to content and usage based billing for composed service sets. The Information Societies Technology (IST) FORM project has prototyped an accounting and billing solution for IP-based telecommunications services. A key element of the solution is the IPDR Network Data Management - Usage specification. This paper presents the FORM development of a federated accounting and billing solution for inter-enterprise IP-based service billing and accounting

ISD AS FOLDING TOGETHER HUMANS & IT Towards a revised theory of Information Technology development & deployment in complex social contexts

    Get PDF
This paper identifies a gap in ISD research regarding the philosophy of information technology as it relates to social impact in complex organisational contexts. It recognises that this will lead to problems of organisational stability, and that too often technology and knowledge transfer is accompanied by a one-sided approach resulting in a loss of local context. It posits a revised philosophical position based upon the work of current thinkers in the philosophy of technology/human relations and applies this position to ISD. This revised perspective challenges researchers to review their working assumptions about research in general and technology development and deployment in particular
